WILLIAM J. KLUENDEB, OF PAULLINA, IOWA.
PARTITION.
Application filed December 4, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, l/VILLIAM J. KLUEN- DER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paullina, in the county of OBrien and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Partitions, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawmgs.
This invention relates to certain improvements in partitions and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with houses employed for hogs or other stock; and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which is capable of vertical adjustment and which may be swung upwardly when desired and particularly in order to facilitate the cleansing of the house.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved partition whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive andotherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is an elevational view illustrating a partition constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken through the device as disclosed in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a horizontal vertical view taken through Fig. 1 at a point above the partition proper.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1-1 denote suitable uprights employed in a house construction particularly adapted for use in connection with hogs and the lower portions of the opposed faces of said uprights 1 are provided with the strips 2 affording guideways for the partition P.
Each of the uprights 1 has arranged in proximity thereto the upstanding rod 3, the extremities of which being angularly dis- Specification of Letters Patent.

posed, as at 4:, to afford means whereby said rod 3 may be secured to the upright.
The upper marginal portion of the partition P is provided with the laterally di rected pairs of brackets, 5, each pair of brackets rotatably supporting a bar 6, the outer end of which being provided with an eye 7 through which a rod 3 is loosely directed so that said partition P may be readily raised or lowered and it is also to be noted that the bars 6 are loosely mounted in the brackets 5 so that When the partition P is elevated the same may be readily. swung upwardly. It is also to be observed that the rods 3 are of a length greater than the guide ways aifordedby the strips 2 so that the partition P may be readily elevated a distance sufficient to remove the same from between said strips.
The outer ends of the bars 6 or more particularly the eyes 7 thereof are provided with the extensions 8 each of which being adapted to strike an arm 9 of the holding member H so that as the partition P'is elevated the hook portion 10 of the holding member H will be caused to pass beneath the adjacent extension 8 and engage therewith so that the partition P may be held elevated. The holding member H has its upper end portion pivotally engaged, as at 11, with the adjacent upright 1 or more particularly the angular extension 4 of the rod 3. As the arm 9 is elevated by contact of an extension 8 therewith, the same is forced between the spring clamping jaws 12 depending from the upper angular extension 4 of the rod 3 at a point in advance of the holding member H, which serve to maintain the holding member H in such position as to assure the operative engagement of the extension 8' therewith when the same is permitted to move downwardly. From the disclosure in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings it will be noted that the upper angular extensions 4 and the rods 3 are substantially L-shaped in form with portions thereof substantially perpendicularly related to the opposed faces of the uprights 1, and whereby the intermediate or vertical portions of said rods 3 are arranged inwardly of or between said uprights 1.
Any suitable means may be employed for maintaining the partition P in position when swung upwardly about the bars 6.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a partition constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be as sembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice, except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
A device of the character described comprising a pair of uprights, the opposed faces of which being provided with guideways, a member slidably engaged within said guideways and positioned between the uprights,
guide rods carried by the uprights and arranged inwardly thereof, bars slidably engaged with the rods and with which the member is pivotally engaged, a holding member pivotally supported adjacent an end of each of the rods and provided with an arm, a bar carried by the slidable member and adapted to contact with said arm upon movement of the member in one direction for causing the holding member to be operatively engaged with the bar, and spring jaws carried by the rod and adapted to receive therebetween the arm of the holding member for maintaining the holding member against return movement.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM J. KLUENDER. Witnesses:
