The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my im-- proved shade and curtain hanger whereby certain important advantages are attained and the'device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.

As disclosed in the accompanying drawvertical stiles of a winand each of said stiles S is the vertically spaced eye loosely directed the elongated rod 2 of predetermined length. It is to be noted that the eye members 1 afford guiding means for the rod 2 dow frame F provided with and serve to confine said rod to a fixed path of travel.

At a predetermined point intermediate its length the rod 2 is provided with the annular groove of recess 3 in which is seated the eye portion 4 of theholding member As is particularly illustrated in the holding member H consists of an elongated arm of predetermined dimensions with the eye 4produced atone end portion thereof preferably by bending said end portion of the arm.

Each of the stiles S inwardly of the rod 2 isprovided with a plurality of vertically spaced keepers or outstanding shoulders 5 with which the holding member H is adapted-to coact in order to maintain the rod 2 in its various vertical adjustments. It is to be understood that downward movement 'of the rod is prevented by swinging the holding member H inwardly to rest upon one of the keepers or outstanding shoulders 5.

C denotes a cross member connecting the upper end portions of the rods 2, said member being preferably flat with its faces vertically disposed, and suitably engaged with the opposite end portions of said member G are the brackets B of any ordinary or preferred'type and which are adapted to support a shade roller.

It is preferred that the cross member C consist of two sections 6 having their adjacent end portions in overlying relation and with each of said sections 6 having fixed thereto a loop 7 through which the second section 6 is loosely directed. By this arrangement it will be at once self-evident that the cross member C may be readily adjusted in accordance with the width of the sash to which it is adapted to be applied.

The outer end portions of the sections 6 have secured thereto the blocks 8, the block of one section coacting with the face of a section 6 opposite to that of the block 8 of the second section 6. The opposed faces of each of the blocks 8 and its coacting section 6 are provided with registering vertically disposed recesses affording an opening 9 through which the upper portion of a rod 2 is directed, and in order to prevent the rod 2 from having rotary movement and to prevent relative independent movement of the rod 2 and the cross member C in a direction longitudinally of the rod, I find it of advantage to dispose through the rod 2 and the adjacent portions of a section 6 and a block 8, the key 10 or the like. The upper end portion of each of the rods is bent outwardly substantially at right angles, as indicated at 11, and is of such configuration as to afiord a support for a pole for curtains or other draperies.

As is particularly noted in Figs. 1 and 2, the rods 2 when at the limit of their upward movement would ordinarily be capable of movement, when under excessive load, in a direction away from the stiles S which would have a tendency to impair the efficiency of my improved hanger. In order to overcome this disadvantage I find it of importance to provide the top strip T of the frame F and at substantially its longitudinal center with the latch L which is adapted to overlie the outer face of the cross member C when limit of its upward movement and whereby it will be at once noted that the upper portion of the hanger is effectively held against movement in a direction away from the frame. As herein embodied, the latch L comprises a substantially L-shaped member possessing a certain degree of inherent resiliency and which has its stem 12 suitably anchored to the top strip T of the window frame and with its foot portion 14. extending downwardly and arranged to overlie and preferably to frictionally engage the outer face of the cross member C.

From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a shade and ourtain hanger constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also the hanger is at the the rods are be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be-understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice, except as hereinafter claimed.

I claim:

1. In combination with a window frame, vertical rods supported by said frame adjacent opposite sides thereof and mounted for endwise movement, a cross member connecting the upper portions of the rod, a latch carried by the frame and adapted to overlie the outer face of the cross member when the rods are substantially at the limit of their upward movement, and curtain supporting means carried by the rods.

2. In combination with a frame, spaced rods disposed vertically of the frame and mounted for endwise movement independently of the frame, each of said rods being provided at a point-intermediate its length with an annular recess, a holding member coacting with each of the rods andprovided with an eye surrounding the rod and seated within the annular recess, shoulders carried by the frame adjacent each of the rods and upon which the holding members are adapted to rest to hold said rods-against downward movement, and shade supporting means carried by the rods.

3. In combination with a window frame, vertical rods supported by said frame adjacent opposite sides thereof and mounted for endwise movement, across member connecting the upper portions of the rod, a latch carried by the frame and adapted to overlie the outer face of the cross member when substantially at the limit of their upward movement, said latch being resilient and frictionally engaging the outer surface of the cross member, and curtain supporting means carried by the rods.
