CLASP non SCARFS, 6w.
Spceification'of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 20, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANZ A. FULLER and JOHN SOI-IROEDER, citizens of the United States, residing in the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Tmprovements in Clasps for Scarfs, &c., of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains tomake, construct, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in clasps for .use on scarfs, or elsewhere, and are of that class in which the two parts are pivotally connected together, so as to be opened to engage the article to be held thereby, and it has for its object, among others, to provide a slmple and inexpensive clasp of this character, which shall be provided with means whereby the jaws thereof may be locked in their closed position, for firmly holding the article to which is it attached, so that the article cannot be accidentally disengaged from the clasp.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and specified 1n the claim.
The invention is clearly indicated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents an enlarged perspective view of our improved clasp, and
Figs. 2 and 3 represent side elevations of the same, the jaws of the clasp being shown in open position in Fig. 2 and in closed locked position in Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference refer to like parts throughout the specification and drawin s.
Tn the drawings, a and b designate the jaws of the clasp, preferably made of metal or any suitable material, which are provided with upturned ears 0 which overlap and are mounted upon and secured by a pivot pin d, said jaws being further provided at their front ends with integral pointed prongs and are being normally held closed under tension by the spring 0, coiled around said pivot pin. f represents a stud, screw-threaded throughout its length, rigidly secured in any suitable manner to the jaw b of the clasp near the end opposite the clamping portion,
and as indicated in Fig. 1, preferably located a little off center, for the reason hereinafter described.
The stud f is designed to pass through an elongated opening or slot 9 in the adjacent end of the a. Upon the screw-threaded stud f is mounted a knurled disk it, provided with a circular boss 2' extending from one side thereof, said disk having screw-threaded engagement with the stud f, and designed to be moved and adjusted thereon.
As previously stated, the stud is preferably located on the jaw Z) and a little off center thereof, so as to permit a portion of sition shown in Fig. 3, the upper surface of the integral boss 71 is brought to bear upon the under side of the jaw a, and the clamping ends are thus locked toget ier to tightly clamp the article therebetween, and there held.
Experience has demonstrated that the organlzation above described is a highly efli-.
cient one, and while the device described is the preferred embodiment of our present invention, we do not care to restrict our selves to the exact details of construction, combination and arrangements herein set forth, it being obvious that minor variations thereof, not involving the exercise of invention, may be made by any skilled mechanic, and such departure from what is herein described and claimed, not involving invention, we consider as within the scope and terms of our claim.
We claim:
A scarf clasp comprising two jaws pivotally connected together intermediate of their ends, a spring coiled around the pivot to normally hold said jaws closed under tension, one of said jaws being provided with an opening arranged off center near the edge of the jaw, a screw-threaded stud, one
end of which is rigidly secured in the end of the other jaw and in close proximity to the longitudinal edge of said jaw, the other end of said screw-threaded stud adapted to pass through the opening in the first-named jaw, and a knurled disk provided with an integral boss adjustahly mounted upon and having screw -threaded engagement with said stud, said boss extending toward and adapted to engage the under side of the opposite jaw to hold said jaws apart and in locked position, a portion only of the cirouinferential edge of the dis; projecting a trifle beyond the longitudinal edges of the upper and lower jaws in order that the same 15 may be readily manipulated.
This specification signed and witnessed this 2nd day of May, 1911.
