IMPROVEMENT IN MODES OFCUTTING BOOT AND SHOE SOLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,969, dated December 19, 1871.

To all whom 'it may concern.-

Be it known that I, SAMUEL J. SHAW, of Marlborough, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an 11nproved Method of Cutting Soles of Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference bein-g had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, in which- Figures liand 2 are plans of rnyimproved patterns for the soles of boots and shoes; Figs. 3 and 4, side elevations of the same. Fig. 5 is a perspective View of one-half of the pattern shown in Fig. l. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of onehalf of the pattern shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 7 represents the halves ofthe diierent patterns united to form an entire sole.

My invention has for its object to enable ine I to employ an interior quality of leather for the heel portion of the sole of a boot or shoe; and consists in cutting out two patterns from leather of different qualities, each pattern being subsequently divided into two portions of the same size and shape; two toe portions of leather of good quality being produced from one pattern, and two heel portions of leather of inferior quality from the other pattern, so that when one toe portion and one heel portion are united a corn plete sole will be produced at a less cost than the ordinary sole cut from ra single piece of leather of good quality, as heretofore.

To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.

In the said drawing A, Fig. 1, represents a 'piece of leather of good quality, of such form that when cut or divided on the line x a", Fig. 3, two toe portions, a, Fig. 5, will. be produced. Another piece of leather, B, Fig. 2, of inferior 6, will be produced. One of the toeportions a.,

and one of the heel portions b are now united by placing the two scarfed ends 8 together, as

seen in Fig. 7, forming a complete sole of two qualities of leather, it dbeing desirable to have the outer line c of the'joint situated sufficiently far back to be covered by the heel of the boot or shoe.

The great advantage resulting from this method of forming a sole is that, owing to the heel portion of the sole being made of an inferior quality of leather, a considerable saving is effected while the durability of the sole is not impaired, as the entire surface exposed to wear is composed of leather oi' the saine quality as that ot' Ordinar;T soles.

The forms of the two patterns A B are such as to admit of their being cut out of a side of leather with but little waste.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. As a new article of manufacture, a boot or shoe sole formed by uniting, by alap-joint in the shank, two pieces of leather of diiierent qualities, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.

2. The patterns A B, of diiierent qualities of leather, to be divided and formed into soles, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
