To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, J HN J. CANNAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New. York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment- Supporting Racks for Trunks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.

My invention relates to trunks, and more particularly to the type known generally as wardrobe trunks, in which provision is made for arranging the garments on forms or hangers in extended position, so as to prevent unnecessary creasing or folding, and to the particular class in which the garments are supported on a carrier that is movable relatively to the body of the trunk, the cloth ing being thus readily accessible when the trunk is used as a wardrobe. A further object of my invention resides in providing a construction that possesses lightness, and is of simple construction, and while capable of being compactly housed when the trunk is closed, can be withdrawn from the trunk in such a manner that the garments will be quite accessible regardless of the size of the trunk. To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel fea tures being pointed out in the claim at the end of the specification.

In the present embodiment of the invention, which illustrates a preferred arrangement, 1 and 2 designate respectively the hinged sections of a trunk, the section 1 being adapted for supporting the usual garment carrier, which is slidably arranged to permit the garment hangers on the carrier to be withdrawn when the trunk is open, as usual in this class of devices. The garment carrying means is indicated generally at 3, while 4 designates one of the garment hangers supported on the carrying means. The carrier 3 embodies front and rear bars connected by the rods 5, which are arranged intermediate the sides of the carrier, the front and rear bars being mounted on an extensible support consisting of telescoping sections including slides 6, slotted at 7 and provided with lugs 8, all for a purpose that will appear more clearly hereinafter.

The extensible support also includes the U-shaped tracks 9 disposed within the slides 6 and provided with pins 10 which engage the aforesaid slots 7 to limit the relative movement of the parts, as shown in Fig. 3. The tracks ,9 are movable on stationary guides which are designated generally at 11 and are suitably secured to the walls of the trunk, flanges 16 being provided for attachment to the end wall, as shown. Said guides also have U-shaped portions 12 engaging the tracks 9, the movement of the latter being determined by pins or projections 13 on the guides which cooperate with the slots 14 of the tracks. The guides 11 are further provided with lugs 15, which may be integral therewith and are arranged to engage lugs 8 on the slides 6, so as to limit the outward movement of the garment carrier, as shown more clearly in Fig. 6.

The construction affords a simple and readily manufactured mechanism, which can be easily applied to a trunk, and enables the garments to be packed in a very compact manner, while at the same time permitting the garment carrler to be withdrawn from its section to a point where the clothes are readily accessible and can be removed 01' arranged Without difliculty.

I claim as my invention:

The combination with the opposite Walls of a trunk, of stationary guides secured to said walls having horizontally disposed flanges extendinginwardly from said Walls, a stop projection extending from one of said flanges, U-shaped tracks, the opposite legs of which engage the flanges of the guide,

one of the legs of the track member having an elongated aperture rormed therein to receive said stop projection horlzontally disposed stops carried by said track members,
