CHLOE E. JOHNSON, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
CURTAIN, BLANKET, AND QUILT FRAME.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 20, 1917.
Application filed May 23, 1912. Serial No. 699,180.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHLOE E. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hamp'den and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Gurtain, Blanket, and Quilt Frames, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in curtain, blanket and quilting frames, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which may be readily adjusted to different sized objects which are held thereby and further to provide means for fastening said objects to the frame without the use of pins.
Another object of the invention is to construct the frame in easel form, permitting the frame to be placed in any desirable posi tion without having to carry a table or chairs about from place to place. The legs which hold the frame are hinged thereto so that they fold against the side of the frame making a compact package when not in place and permitting the same to be placed in a very small compartment.
By eliminating the use of pins in fastening the object to the frame, the possibility of tearing the object is overcome and no holes are made in the goods when being used as a quilting frame.
With these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numerals to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- The figure is a perspective view of the frame showing it standing as when in use.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied, I employ a pair of coasting side members 2 and 3 respectively and a pair of coacting end members 4 and 5 respectively. From these side and end members I produce four corner sections 6, 7, 8 and 9, each section comprising one end member and one side member. These end and side members are divided into two sets, each set comprising four of the members and the members of one set I will term guide members 11 and the members of the other set sliding members 12. Each of the guide members has a longitudinal relatively narrow cut away portion 13 at one edge thereof, forming a relatively wide arm 14. Each of the sliding members 12 has a relatively wide longitudinal cut away portion 15 producing a relatively narrow arm 16 which slides against the edge of the relatively wide arm, being held thereto by the guides orclips 17 which are preferably produced from fiat strips of metal bent upon themselves and their ends fastened in place by nails 18 or their equivalent.
After adjusting the frame, the coacting members are held in their adjusted positions by frame clamps 19, each of which consists of a body 20 passing beneath the arms of the co-acting members, and right angled extensions 21 through one of which is threaded a thumb screw 22. When these clamps are in place, one of the extensions hes against one edge of one of the arms and the mner end of the thumb screw will engage the edge of the other arm, and by threading said screw inward said arms Wlll be drawn together and held against displacement.
One of the arms, preferably the relatively wide one, forming ends and sides are each provided with a rabbet, which registers with a longitudinal groove 24: formed in the face of the holding strip 25. These holding strips are held in place by the holding strip clamps 26 which are quite similar to the frame clamps, with the exception as to size. In the holding strip clamps the body 2-7 is relatively short, being only suflicient to accommodate the thickness of the members forming the frame and the holding strip while the extensions 28 thereof are relatively long so as to reach the holding strips which areplaced adjacent the inner edges of the side and end members.
These clamps are provided with thumb screws 29 for forcing the' holding strips against the members. 30 denotes a pair of legs hinged to the frame so that when in use their free ends will rest upon the ground while the edge of the frame opposite to the side to which the legs are hinged will also rest upon the ground, allowing the frame to stand while in use like an easel.
In practice the frame is adjusted to the correct size and the frame clamps 19 placed in position and fastened so that the parts will be held stationary, then the object to be placed on the frame is laid over the same and one edge at a time fastened in position by placing the holding strips 25 on theoutside thereof, so that the groove 24 Will be in alinement with the rib 23. The holding strip clamps 26 are then placed in position and by drawing down on the thumb screw 29 the object will be forced into the grooves 24: so as to conform with the rib 23, and said object will be securely held in place.
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as here shown, as these may be varied Within the limits of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, is
A curtain, blanket, and quilt frame comprising four corner sections each consisting of two arms projecting at right angles to each other with their upper faces lying in the same plane, certain of said arms being relatively wide transversely and the others Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each,
relatively narrow transversely, said narrow arms adapted to coact With the outer edges of said wide arms, means" carried by certain of said arms for holding and guiding the coacting arms, means for holding said arms in their adjusted positions and means for detachably fastening an object to the frame, said means consisting of ribs formed upon certain of the arms, holding strips having grooves formed lengtl'iwise thereof in their inner faces and adapted to register with the ribs, and means engaging said strips and the arms'on which they are mounted for holding the former in position.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto allixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHLOE E. JOHNSON.
