COMBINATION" WATER-HEATER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 20, 1917.
Application filed October 1, 1914. Serial lfIo. 864,473.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES G. SCOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at l/Vashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination lVater-Heaters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,
-such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to water heating devices for dwellings and the like, and has for its object to provide a novel construction and arrangement of the heater.
With this and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction of the heaterand particularly in the hot water heating coils and in the construction and arrangement of the burners, and in the construction and arrangement of the housing for the heating coils.
The invention further consists in certain other novel details of construction and combinations of parts, all of which will be first fully described and afterward specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a top plan view of the heating apparatus.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view through one of the heating coils, the burners and the coil housing.
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the heater, illustrating'the heating coils and their connections, and also the gas or fuel piping.
Like numerals of reference indicate the same parts throughout the several figures, in which 1 indicates the heater which may be of any form, size or construction, preferably of the type of the usual domestic gas stove or range and which may have any suitable number of burner holes, as for instance four as illustrated in the drawings.
The top 2 of the stove or heater is provided with the usual skeleton openingjor spiders 3 to receive cooking and culinary vessels, and the housing 4 (Fig. 2) for the heating coils 5 are arranged under the spiders 3, the said coils 5 being arranged over the burners 6, 7 and 8.
Referring now to the specific construction of the coil housings 4 and particularly to Fig. 2 it will be'seen that said housing 4 is divided into 2 compartments, namely, the outer compartment 9 and the central compartment 10, a portion of the coil 5 being arranged in the outer compartment 9 and passing through the wall 11 into the central compartment 10, in which latter compartment the coil 5 is preferably arranged in twoor more layers, the number and size of which layers depending upon the character of the heater and the purposes for which it is to be .used.
Referring further to Fig. 2 it will be seen that the wall 11 forming the central compartment 10 extends vertically to a point above the uppermost layer 12 of the coil 5 Where it flares abruptly to form the wall 13, which wall joins with the top 2 of the stove or heater.
The purpose of this construction is to accommodate the coil 5 to the action of the two independent burners 6 and 7. The heat from the burner 6 being directed to that portion of the coil 5 within the compartment 9 and to the outer sides of that portion of the coil 5 within the central compartment 10, the said burner being so located as to prevent an appreciable quantity of heat from passing up through the central compartment 10 and to the spider 3 above the same. The wall 11 and the flared wall 13 also prevent the direct heat from the burner 6 passing to the spider 3. The purpose of the burner 7 which is partitioned from the burner 6 by an annular vertical wall 14 is to supply heat directly to the central layered portion of the coil 5 and directly to or under the spider 3 of the stove or heater.
The purposes of this construction are to prevent excessive heat directly to and under the spider 3 when the burner 6 is in operation, it being desired to confine the direct heat passing to the spider 3 to that heat from the central burner 7.
Referring now toFig. 3 which illustrates the connections to and from the heating coils it will be seen from this figure that the pipe 22 leading from the hot water tank or boiler (not shown) is provided with a suitable connection 17 such as a cross, to which connec tion 17 the outer end 18 of each heating coil is connected. It will beseen that the inner end 19 of each heating coil 5 is suitably connected as at 20 and 21 to the pipe 15, which leads to the hot water tank or boiler (not shown).
40 indicates the gas supply pipe leading to the burners 6.
Each of the burners 6 is provided with a pilot burner 8 connected to the gas pipe A3 by means of which the outer burners 6 are lighted to heat the heating coils. As will appear from Fig. 3 the central burners 7 are supplied with gas independent of the supply to the outer burners (3, the numeral 41 indicating the gas supply pipe to the central burners 7 which pipe is provided with manually operated valves 42 to control the supply of gas to the central burners 7.
Having thus fully described the invention it is of course apparent that the accompanying drawings are diagrammatic and that the arrangement and construction of the parts must necessarily be changed or altered to meet varying conditions, and I therefore consider myself clearly entitled to all such changes and modifications as fall within the limit and scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A device of the character described comprising a heating coil, the innermost portion of which is formed with one layer over the other, a housing tor said coil partitioned into two compartments and independent burners for heating said compartments inde pendently.
2. A device of the character described comprising a heating coil, the inner portion of which'is formed in layers one over the other, a housing for said coil partitioned to provide a central compartment and an outer annular compartment, the central portion of said coil being disposed in said central.
compartment, the outer portion of said coil being disposed in said outer annular compartment and independent burners for heating said compartments.
3. A device of the character described comprising a heating coil, a housing for the same partitioned into two compartments, the central portion of said coil being disposed in one compartment, the outer portion of said coil being disposed in the other compartment and independent burners for heating the said compartments and the coil therein.
4. A device of the character described comprising a heating coil, a housing therefor partitioned into two compartments, the central portion of said coil being disposed in one compartment, the outer portion of said coil being disposed in the other com partment, an independent heater under each compartment, means above said housing for supporting cooking utensils, said housing comprising means for preventing excessive heat from one of the said burners passing to the said means for supporting the cooking utensils.
5. A device of the character describedcomprising a heating coil, a housing therefor partitioned into a central compartment and an outer annular compartment, the central portion of said coil being disposed in said central compartment, the outer portion. of said coil being disposed in said outer compartment, a heater under said central compartment, means for supporting a cooking utensil above said central compartment to receive heat therethrough from the said burner, an independent burner under said outer compartment for heating the portion of the said coil therein, the said housing in cluding means for preventing excessive heat from the last mentioned burner to the said means for supporting a cooking utensil.
6. A device of the character described comprising a heating coil, a housing partitioned into a central compartment and anouter annular compartment, the central portion of said coil being disposed in the said central compartment, the outer portion of the said coil being disposed in the said outer compartment, a burner under the said central compartment, means for supporting a cooking utensil above the said central compartment, an independent burner under the said outer compartment, said housing including a vertical annular wall forming the said central compartment, and an outwardly flared wall above the said outer compartment, said walls being arranged to prevent excessive heat from the last mentioned burner from passing to the means for supporting a cooking utensil.
7. A device of the character described i11- cluding a heating coil, a housing partitioned into two compartments, the central portion of saidcoil being disposed in the central compartment, the outer portion of said coil being disposed in the outer compartment, means for heating the two compartments independently.
In testimony whereof, I affix vmy signature, in presence of two witnesses.
