HALCOLM ELLIS, OF EAST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY.
REBOUNDING DEVICE FOR NUMBER-PRINTING MECHANISMS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented B131. 20, 1917.
Original application filed October 13, 1914, Serial No. 866,481. Patent No. 1,203,863, dated November 7, 1916.
Divided and this application filed October 9, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HALCOLM Ennis, a citizen of'the United States, residing at East .0 ange, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rebounding Devices for Number-Printing Mechanisms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rebounding devices for number printing mechanism, the presentapplication being a division of Patent No. 1,203,863, dated Nov. 7, 1916.
My object is to provide improvements on the rebound device for the number printing mechanism disclosed in my Patents Nos. 1,197,276 and 1,197,277 dated September 5, 1916, and claimed in the latter patent.
In the mechanism of my patents aforesaid, the pivoted type sector is carried by an arm which is drawn to printing position by a spring. For effecting rebound of the type "sector and the arm which carries it, there is provided a rebound spring device which constitutes theconncction between a pivotally mountedrebound member and the arm and, being stronger than the spring first named, instantly retracts or rebounds the type sector after printing has occurred so that chattering oi: the type on the paper is prevented.
Thercbound spring of the mechanism of my aforesaid patents is of peculiar form and relationship to the arm and the rebound member with which it cooperates.
My present invention has for its object the provision of a novel rebound device cooperating with the typersector carrying arm and rebound member or piece in an improved manner whereby the peculiarly shaped spring of my aforesaid patents is entirely dispensed with and the single contractile coil spring serves, in connection with an improved pivoted member, to fulfil the twofold function of drawing the arm, rebound member or piece, and type sector to printing position and for efl'ccting automatic rebounding of the type sector and the'arm which carries it, after the impression has been made on the paper carried by the v)laten thereb )rev'cnting chatterin By dispensing with the peculiar rebound spring of my aforesaid patents, the cost of manufacture of the rebound device is re- Serial No. 124,673.
duced and liability of derangement or brealc age of the rebound mechanism is obviated.
Combined with the contractile coil spring is a. rocker which is pivoted to the arm which carries the type secto' and has branches cooperating with different parts of the rebound member or piece. The action of the spring and points of co-action of the rocke with the rebound member are such that when the rebound member or piece is released by the disengagement of the printing trigger therefrom, the spring moves the arm and the rebound member or piece as a unit with the type sector to eliect printing. Just prior to printing being eii'cctcd, a stop engages with and arrests the rebound member or piece,-
whercupon the arln and the printing sector continue to advance by their momentum and, printing is e'l'lected. This action causes the rebound rocker toxlisengage at one point from contact with the rebound member or piece. The spring still being under tension, it restores the rebound rocker to normal position, that is, with a two-point contact with 1,197,276 and 1,197,277 dated September 5,
1916, aii'ord a thorough understanding of the ap 'ilication thereto, and operation, of the present invention. Those mechanisms which are set forth in the aforesaid patents are only described in a general way.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical section showing parts of the machin'e in their normal posi tion;
Fig. 2, a similar view showing the parts with one numeral key depressed, one accumulator engaged, and the printing mechanism set in position just prior to printing.
Fig. a vertical detailed sectiorfi of the number printing mechanism, the parts being in position for printing;
Fig. -fi,'t view similar to Fig. 3, showing the parts in rebounded position;
' Fig. 6, a detail of the rebound member;
Fig 7, a detail of the arm; and
Fig. 8 a detail oi the rebound rocker.
General 00nstructi0n.-lhc machine is operated through suitable means, not shown, by a handle or motor acting on shaft 01.
Referring to l and 2, R50 is one of the racks, of Which there are a plurality, said rack beingguided by red K3 and bar R92. The rack carries teeth 50R. T accumulators N45, which are shown like those in my Patent No. 1203863, dated Nov. '2', 1916, have gear wheels A50 adapted to be engaged with the racks for purposes of addition, subtractionfior any other operation. The accumulators shown are for pur poses of illustration only as they form no part of the present invention The racks R50 are controlled, as to extent of movement, to represent the numerical value of the respective numeral keys K51, K52, K53, K5 K55 K56, K57, K58, K59. Stops iQ-i carried by the key stem areadapted to cooperate with the steps on the r: cl: l 5,0. v
Mounted on the shaft R1, is three-arn'ied lever R45, of which there are as manyas the type sectors P54 and provided Withthe pins R and 15R. The third arm extends downward and has terminals to which is secured by pins R13, R14, a segmental rack 'l is pin R14- is received in a vertical slot in the lower edge of rack R50, shown by dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2, so that backward or forward movement of the reel: R causes rotation of the three-armed lever it link extends from pin 15R to pivot P10 in type sector Type sector P54 is pivoted to arm 521 on pin P11 so that it can be swung outwardly or downwardly to bring it tothe proper position for printing a, numher corresponding to the set position of the rack R50. The arm 52? is pivotally mounted on the rod P1,
To the shaft R1, there is secured a bail can which extends across the machine under the racks R50 and carries a bar n51; spring 18.80 connects pin to bar lift, there beingas many of thesesprings there are racks R59. An alining' bar R93 cari'ed by arms secured to shaft K2, is adapted to enter the teeth of the segmental rack H52 just prior to the time when printing is to occur.
Rebound mcc7zanism.- ir0tally mounted on the rod P1 is the rebound member or piece P62 shown in detail. in 5 and 6, this member being provided with teeth on one edge for engagement by the printing trigger 57F and the O printing trigger P57, the latter being" spring-retracted and adapted to be released by the coa'ction of the pin R15 therewith The printing trigger 57? is controlled and operated as set forth in my patents aforesaid,
across Whose upper part extends a Secured to the P1 is a piece 1; H
adapted to engage and retain all the rc bound members or pieces P62 until the printing operation is to be initiated.
A rebound bar P18, carried by arms P59 is adapted to serve as an abutment or stop for the rebound members or pieces P62. The bar P18 is rendered adjustable by an eccentric shaft P19 cooperating with arms a On its inner'edge the rebound member piece is provided with a tooth or pro jection P620 6). v v
dy improved rebound rocker which shown in detail in Fig. 8, is pivoted to t arm 521 on a pin or stud P16 which passe through a hole P160 in'said rocker tlu rocker being carried bodily by the arm The rebound rocker 581 has a tooth or projection 580? which is engaged with the tooth or projection P620 and constitutes a heel on said rebound rocker. The toe 58' l) of the rocker is adapted to bear on the hub of the rebound member or piece P under normal conditions. The rebound roe ofsubstantially the thickness of the tint rebound member P62 and the boy sai... rocker lies in front of the said rebound menu ber. Each arm 52F carries a rebound rocker and has as a coinpanioz-zi a rebound member P62 so that each arm 521 and tor has itsown rebound device or IKEQLAM anism. v
A contractile coil spring P is connec at one end to an eye 5821 at the end p01 of the shank of the r bound rocker I There is a separate spring P for each bound rocker.
