Specicaton of Letters Patent. Y Patented R131', 13, 1917,
Application led February 2, 1915. Serial No. 5,612.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, INfiifrnn C. RUNGE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of vWest Collingswood, county of Camden, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Supporters, of which the following is -a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.- Y
My invention relates particularly to that class of garment supporters in which an open loop formed of sheet material or wire isv attached at its upper end to a sii'pporting strap of elastic or other webbing and tapers toward its lower or freey end, so asto securely engage in its constricted region the fabric of the garment to be supported, either by wadding said fabric and drawing it into the constricted lower end of the loop, or by the cooperation with said loop of al button or stud which is carried by a companion strap and arranged to force the fabric into the loop and frictionally engage it in the said constricted lower end.v
My invention is 'especially directed to means for preventinginjury to the fabric of the garment to be supported, incident to its being drawn into the constricted region of the loop whereby it is supported.
The principal object of my invention is to prevent the direct contacty of the fabric of the 'garment to be supported, with the hard and rigid edges of the supporting loop, by providing a fiat thimble forming a jacket or sheath in which the loop vis arranged to be clothed. f
My invention, specifically stated, comprises a closed bag forming a jacket or sheath having a restricted opening or neck at its upper end for the entrance of the loop, upon which said sheath may be loosely disposed so as to be readily removed therefrom, or it may be suitably attached at its upper end to the loop or its supporting strap.
My invention further comprehends a jacket or sheath having an elastic girdle adjacent to its open end, which tends to restrict the opening therein and which causes the walls of the jacket to closely hug the loop and frictionally engage said jacket therewith.
My invention also includes all of the various novel features of constructiony and arrangementv hereinafter more definitely specified, l
"fwith the" supporting loop of the garment supporter; Fig. 4 is a front elevational view of a modification of the sheath conveniently attached to a garment supporter; and Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken through the sheath per se. j
In said figures, the garment supporter comprises the strap of webbing 5, which is itself looped to provide a hanger for `the loop 6, and is extended therefrom to form the companion strap 7, at the termination of which is the frame 8 carrying the button or stud 9, which is cooperative with the open loop 6 to engage the stocking 10 in a wellknown manner.
Various means have been devised whereby a web of suitable material is interposed between the 4fabric of the supported garment and the supporting loop of the garment supl porter, to distribute the strain over an increased area of the stitches of said fabric and thereby preventthe possibility of slipping of the garment, or straining, tearing, or otherwise rupturing said stitches thereof.
In the present invention it is proposed to provide the loop 6 with a bag or sheath l2 forming a jacket in which the said loop 6 may be clothed so that said loop may be entirely invisible.
The sheath 12 is preferably formed of two similar webs of chamois forming the front and rear walls 13 and 14C respectively of the sheath 12, and having their perimeter-s joined by stitches 15 except at their top edge, whereby a restricted opening is formed for the entrance of the loop 6, such opening being of such extent as to snugly iit the upper portion ofthe loop and be removably held thereon by friction.
Although the sheath 12 may be held by frictionfon the loop 6, it is to` be understood that it may be permanently secured in position to clothe Vthe loop by securing it to the supporter by stitches 16, as shown in Figs. 1 and The sheath 12 may be of any desired contour, but it is found desirabie that its body be sufficiently broad to provide ample fullness at the point of engagement with the garment to be supported Within the opening ot the loop, and that said body taper toward its restricted open end, as sl own in Fig. 1'?
Itrivill be seen by an inspection Yot Fig. 2 thatrthe rear Wall it is thrust through the openingV in tile loop 6 and puckered With theV garment to be supported, Whilethe front Wall 13 is bulged in a concave manner exterior thereto and servesY to hide the unsightly Wadding the fabric or Web due Y to its being Vthrust through said loop.
In the engagement ot' the garment 10 ivith the loop 6, it has been found that the bestV results are attained by Vgrasping the sheath and button 9 with the interposed garment between the thumb and Viinger and drawing them upward simultaneously, as best shown in Fig. 3, so that whenv said button is thrust through the eye 19 of the loop and lthen drawn down into the constricted slot 20, the sheath 12 will be distorted or pulled out oi' position.
The sheath 22 shown in Fig. l is provided with an elastic band 23 adjacent to its open end, and is thereby removably engaged with the loop 25. i
I do notdesire to limit my invention to the precise details of construction and arrangement herein set forth, as it is obvious that various modifications may be made therein Without departing from the essential features of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claimz` 1. The combination with garment supporterY having a loop for engaging said garment, of a sheath having an open end refy stricted, and having elastic adjacent to said openend tending to draw the Walls of said sheath into rictional engagementjwith saidV ing through which said loop may be insert-k ed, and means for permanently attaching said sheath to said supporter; Y
Ll. An 'ticle of manufacture comprising a closed sheath for clothing the loop eta garment supporter, andV having a restricted opening at one end through which the loop is inserted.
An article of manufacture comprising a closedV sheath for clothing the loopV of a l.
garment supporter, and having a restricted neck at its upper end through which.V said loop is inserted, and abroadened body, one Wall of which is arranged to be engaged in the opening of said loop, together with the fabric of the garment to be supported.
6. An article otmanutacture comprising close-d sheath for clothing the loop of a garment supporter, and having a restricted neck at its upper open end through which said loop is inserted. and elastic means adjax cent to its open end for rictionally engag ing said loop. Y
In Witness Whereof,.1 have hereunto set my hand this 80th day of December, A. D. 1914.
