To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RALPH M. BABBITT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kalamazoo, county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Tops, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in stove tops.

In malleable castings of such size and character as are necessary where used in the manufacture of stove tops there is more or less variation due to variation in shrinkage and other causes.

My improvements are particularly desirable for embodiment in stove tops formed of such castings and are designed to practically overcome such variations.

The main object of this invention 13 to provide an improved stove top in which the parts can be readily fitted together to c ompensate for irregularities in the castings and the parts conveniently assembled.

Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.

I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out 1n the claims.

A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:

In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines. Referring to the drawing, my improved top comprises front and rear side members 1 and 2, respectively, and front and rear end members 3 and 4, respectively. These members constitute the frame proper and are flanged at their outer edges to strengthen and provide proper finish and have rabbeted flanges 5 at their inner edges adapted to receive the top plates 6. The top plates 6 are provided with the usual openings and lids.

The fire-box, designated generally by the numeral 7, is provided with a feed chute 8 having a door 9. The front end member 3 is adapted to receive this door 9. The door 9 is provided with pintles 9 retained by the washers 9 (see Fig. IV). These side and end members are preferably malleable castlngs.

In order to permit the ready machining of the castings so that they may be fitted to compensatefor variations in shrinkage and the like the front end member 3 is provided with plain ends 10, that is, ends which have no projections or the like and may be machined or ground ofi flat. abut the inner edges of the front and rear side members at 11 and 12, respectively. The abutting edges of the front and rear members are provided with projecting tongues 13 and 14 which lap under the front member 3 and which are secured thereto by suitable bolts.

The front side member 1 has a plain end 15 which abuts the edge 16 of the rear end member 4. The end member 4 is provided with a tongue 17 at its abutting edge projecting under and secured to the front member 1. The end member 4 has a plain end 18 abutting the front edge of the rear member These ends 10 2 at 19. The member 2 has a tongue 20 central pipe collar opening 21 and is formed of sections 22 having abutting joints 23 at diagonally opposite points of the opening. Each section has one plain joint end 24 and one tongued joint end 25 having tongues 26 thereon lapping under the plain joint ends.

The pipe collar 27 is fitted into the opening and is provided With ears 28 lapping coacting ears 29 on the sections and secured thereto by the bolts 30, so that the pipe collar constitutes a coupling member for the sections.

The rear member is provided with an' inwardly projecting ear 31 secured by the bolt 32 to a slotted ear 33 on the stove body (see Figs. I and VI).

IVith the parts thus arranged, the sections may be formed of malleable castings and each casting readily fitted or machined as occasion requires for assembling, the fitting merely consisting of grinding off one end of the front and rear end members. Each end of the front member 3 may be ground off to properly center and fit it. The ends 24: of the rear sections 22 may be ground off to fit those sections so that only grinding or machining operations are required and only on plain ends, that is, ends without projecting tongues, rabbets or the like. IVith the parts thus formed and arranged they are economical to produce and easily fitted and assembled.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. In a stove top, the combination of front and rear side members and front and rear end members, the front end member being adapted to receive a fire-box door and having plain ends abutting the inner edges of the front and rear side members, the front side member and the rear end member each having one plain end abutting the edges of the rear end and rear side members respectively, said members having tongues on their end abutting edges. underlapping and secured to the members and abutting therewith, said rear side member having a central pipe collar opening therein and being formed of sections having abutting joints at diagonally opposite points of said opening, each section having one plain joint end and one tongued joint end coacting with such plain joint ends and secured thereto, and a pipe collar secured in said opening and constituting a coupling member for said sections.

In a stove top, the combination of front and rear side members and front and rear end members, the front end member being adapted to receive a fire-box door and having plain ends abutting the inner edges of the front and rear side members, the front side member and the rear end member each having one plain end abutting the edges of pipe collar opening therein and beingformed of sections having joints at opposite sides of said opening, one end of each of such section joints being plain and the other tongued, and a pipe collar secured in said opening and constituting a coupling member for said sections.

In a stove top, the combination of front and rear side members and front and rear end members, the front end member being adapted to receive a fire-box door and having plain ends abutting the inner edges of the front and rear side members, the front side member and the rear egd member each having one plain end abutting the edges of the rear end and rear side members respectively, said members having tongues on their end abutting edges underlapping and secured to the members and abutting therewith, said rear side member having a central pipe opening therein and being formed of sections having joints at opposite sides of said opening, one end of each of such section oints being plain and the other tongued.

4. In a stove top, the combination of front and rear side members and end members, one end member having plain ends abutting the inner edges of the front and rear side member, the front side member having one plain end abutting the edge of the other end member, such other end member having one plain end abutting the edge of the rear side member, said members having oint tongues on their end abutting edges coacting with the ends of the members and abutting therewith, said rear side member having a central pipe collar opening therein and being formed of sections having joints at opposite sides of said opening, one end of each joint being plain and the other tongued, and a pipe collar secured in said opening and constituting a coupling member for said sections.

5. In a stove top, the combination of front and rear side members and end members, one end member having plain ends abutting the inner edges of the front and rear side member, the front side member having one plain end abutting the edge of the other end member, such other end member having one plain end abutting the edge of the rear side member, said members having joint tongues on their end abutting edges coacting with the ends of the members and abutting therewith, said rear side member having a central opening therein and being formed of sections having joints at oppositesides of said opening, one end of each joint being plain and the other tongued.

6.
