To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, I'IENRY I. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Iv achine-IIammers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in machine hammers.
My improved machine hammer is especially designed by me for use on mandrel presses to assist in driving the ram, and the embodiment illustrated in the accompanying drawing is an adaptation of my invention for that use. My improvements are, however, readily adapted for use for va rious purposes and in various relations.
The main objects of my invention are:
First, to provide an improved machine hammer which is adapted to be mounted upon a mandrel press ram to coact with the ram actuatingmeans with which the press is equipped.
Second, to provide an improved machine hammer adapted for striking very rapid blows.
Third, to provide an improved machine hammer which requires little power to opcrate.
Fourth, to provide an improved machine hammer which. is simple and compact in structure and at the same time very durable.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:

In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several. views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the ram of a mandrel press. The frame 2 is provided with a socket 3 adapted to receive the end of the ram 1. The frame is provided with bearings 4 at its outer end for the driving shaft 5 which is provided with crank 6. The frame has a yoke-like portion 7 located between its socket 3 and its shaft bearings t.
A pivot rod 8 is supported transversely of the yoke-like portion 7 of the frame by the ears 9. Mounted on this pivot rod in a spaced relation is a pair of striker bars 10. The hammer shanks 11 are mounted on the bars 10 by the pivots 12. At their front ends the shanks 11 are provided with cylindrical sockets 13 adapted to receive the hammer heads 1%. The shanks 11 are disposed on the inner sides of the striker bars and are provided with enlargements l5 having'sockets 16 therein for the springs 17, supported in opposed sockets 18 at the outer ends of the striker bars, the sockets 18 being offset to the inside so as to lie on opposite sides of the hammer shanks.
The. springs 17 are retained in place by the. rod 17 disposed therethrough, which is threaded and retained by the nuts 17 at its opposite ends. An aperture 15 is through the shank 11 through the bottoms of the sockets 16 whereby the shank plays freely on the said rodwhich serves as a guide and a support therefor. The spring is sufficiently. stiff to effectively deliver the V blowsand to insure proper flexibility in the action of the hammer.
The hammerzheads l-it are retained in the shank socketslZ-l by means of. the set screws 19. The striker bars 10 are provided with oppositely projecting yoke-like arms 20 connected by the links 21 to the cross-head the links being connected to the cross-head by the pivots 23 and with the arms 20 by the pivots 24, the parts being provided with centrally located spaced ears adapted to receive these pivots.
The cross-head is centrally located between the striker bars. The cross-head is provided with a sliding support 25 arranged to reciprocate in a bearing 26 on the frame and is connected by the pitman 27 to the crank shaft 6 of the driving shaft The pitman is connected to the cross-head by the pivot 28. The pitman is, for convenience in assembling the parts, provided with an enlargement 29 having an opening 30 therein through which the pivot 8 is disposed;
With the parts thus arranged, when the driving shaft is rotated the cross-head is reciprocated and the cross-head through its connection. to the striker bars actuates the same alternately. A further advantage of this arrangement of parts is that they are accurately balanced so that but little power isrequired to drive the machine.
The frame member 2 has a pair of impact members 31 mounted thereon above the socket 3 to receive the blows from the hairmers. These impact members are preferably of steel and are preferably provided with threaded shanks or stems 32 threaded into the frame. lVashers 33 of copper or other suitable material softer than the impact members are arranged between the members and the frame, the object being to provide these parts of softer metal than the impact members and thereby relieve the impact members of some of the wear they would otherwise receive.

TH and VII that the crosshead is intoral with the, rear end-of the sliding mem ber 25., so that the crosshead 22 is likewise connected to the pitman 27 by the. pivot'28.
When the crosshead ismoved toward the 7 rear by means of the pitman 2'? the upper linkQl causes the upper yoke 20 to tilt to ward the rear, as shown in Fig. '11, about the pivot pin 8. The connection between the link 21 and the upper yoke 20 is also clearly shown in Figs. HI and VI. striker bars 10 are integral with the yokes Since the I 20 the upper striker bar 10 will be inclined upwardly, as clearly shown in Fig. II, when the yoke 20 is tilted rearwardly. The lower striker bar 10 is also formed integral with the lower yoke 20, and when the crosshead 22 is moved rearwardly the link 21, which is pivoted, as shown in both Figs. Hand III, to the crosshead 22, will cause theyoke 20 to assume a rearwardly inclined position, as shown in I II, and, since this yoke is on the opposite side of the pivot from the upper yoke 20, the lower striker bar will be inclined in an opposite direction from that of the upper bar,.as clearly sh wn in Fig. Ill. The machine may be driven at considerable speed so thatthe blows are very rapid, in fact, several hundred a minute being entirely practicable.
The ram of a mandrel press equipped with my improved machine hammer is much more powerful or may be driven with much lesspower than is ordinarily required.
In the modified structure shown in Fig. XII the machine is adapted to be driven from the counter shaft L0 having a tight and loose pulley 4C1 thereon connected to the pulley 42 on the jack shaft 43 by the belt 44.. This jack shaft 43 is carried by the swinging arms A shaft 46 .is mounted on the bracket-arm 35 of. the frame 2 and. is connected by pivoted arms 4-5 to jack shaft 4-3.
Pulleys-47 and 48 are mounted on shaft 46. The pulley 48 is connected by the belt 49 to a pulley 50 on the jack shaft. The pulley 4:7 is connected by the belt 51 to the pulley 52 on the driving shaft 5. These swinging arms maintain the position of the pulleys and belts when the ram is raised and lowered. Except for the driving means the structure is substantially that above described.
I have not attempted to illustrate or describe the various embodiments and applications of my improvements to the various uses which I contemplate as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the artto which my invention relates to adapt the same to various .uses or to make such modifications as are required to adapt my improvements to the desired uses. The
hammer is adaptable for forging uses for stamping purposes and for the uses of trip hammers, stamps, and other similar uses.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a frame, a crank driving shaft, a pivot carried by said frame, a pair of striker bars mounted on said pivot in a spaced relation and provided with yoke-like arms disposed oppositely and on opposite sides of said pivot, said striker bars having pairs of spaced inwardly offset opposed spring sockets at their outer ends, a crosshead reciprocatingly mounted on said frame centrally between said striker bars, links connecting said cross-head to said arms of said striker bars, a pitman connecting said cross-head to the crank of said driving shaft, hammer shanks pivotally mounted at their inner ends on the inner sides of said striker bars and extending between said spring supporting sockets thereof, said shanks being provided with spring sockets opposite said sockets of said striker bars, springs arranged in said sockets to support said hammer shanks, and hammer heads arranged in said head sockets of said shanks.
2. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a frame, a crank driving shaft, a pivot carried by said frame, a pair of striker bars mounted on said pivot, a cross-head reciprocatingly mounted 011 said frame centrally between said striker bars, links connecting said cross-head to said arms of said striker bars, a pitman connecting said cross-head to the crank of said driving shaft, hammers on said striker bars, springs arranged in said sockets to support said hammer shanks, and hammer heads on said shanks.
In a structure of the class described, the combination of a frame, a crank driving shaft, a pivot carried by said frame, a pair of striker bars mounted on said pivot in a spaced relation and provided with yoke-like arms disposed oppositely and on opposite sides of said pivot, a cross-head reciproeatingly mounted on said frame centrally between said striker bars, links connecting said cross-head to said arms of said striker bars, a pitman connecting said crosshead to the crank of said driving shaft, hammer heads provided with shanks pivotally mounted on said striker bars, springs interposed between said striker bars and hammer shanks.
4c. In a structure 'of the class described, the combination of a frame, a pivot carried by said frame, a pair of striker bars mounted on said pivot in a spaced relation and provided with yoke-like arms disposed oppositely and on opposite sides of said pivot, a cross-head reciprocatingly mounted on said frame centrally between said striker bars, links connecting said cross-head to said arms of said striker bars, hammer heads provided with shanks pivotally mounted on said striker bars, and springs interposed between said striker bars and hammer shanks.
5. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a frame, a pivot carried by said frame, a pair of striker bars mounted 011 said pivot in a spaced relation. and provided with yoke-like arms disposed oppositely and on opposite sides of said pivot, a cross-head reciprocatingly mounted on said frame centrally between said striker bars, links connecting saidcross-head to said arms of said striker bars, and hammers mounted on said striker bars.
6. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a frame, a crank driving shaft, a pair of striker bars pivotally mounted in a spaced relation and provided with oppositely disposed arms, said striker bars having pairs of spaced inwardly offset opposed spring sockets at their outer ends, a cross-head reciprocatingly mounted on said frame centrally between said striker bars, links connecting said cross-head to said arms of said striker bars, a pitman connecting said cross-head to the crank of said driving shaft, hammer shanks pivotally mounted at their inner ends on the inner sides of said striker bars and extending between said spring supporting sockets thereof, said shanks being provided with spring sockets opposite said sockets of said striker bars, springs arranged in said sockets to support said hammer shanks, and hammer-heads arranged in said hammer head sockets of said shanks.
7. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a frame, a crank driving shaft, a pair of striker bars pivotally mounted in a spaced relation and provided with oppositely disposed arms, a cross-head reciprocatingly mounted on said frame centrally between said striker bars, links connecting said cross-head to saidarms of said striker bars, a pitman connecting said crosshead to the crank of said driving shaft, and hammers on said striker bars.
8. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a frame adapted to be mounted on a member to be driven and provided with a pair of impact members, a crank driving shaft, a pair of striker bars pivotally mounted on said frame and provided with oppositely projecting arms, a reciprocatingcross-head, a pitnian connecting said cross-head to the crank of said driving shaft, links connecting said cross-head to said armsof said striker bars, hammers provided with sha ks pivotally mounted on said striker bars, springs interposed between said hammer shanks and striker bars, a motor mounted on said frame, and driving connections for said motor to said driving shaft;
9. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a frame adapted to be mounted on a member to be driven and provided with a pair of impact members, a crank driving shaft, a pair of striker bars pivotally mounted on said frame and provided with oppositelyprojecting arms, a re ciprocating cross-head, a pitman connecting said crosshead to the crank of said driving shaft, links connecting said cross-head to said arms of said striker bars, hammers provided with shanks pivotally mounted on said striker bars, springsinterposed between said hammer shanks and striker bars, and driving means for said driving shaft.

In a structure of the class described, the combination of a frame, a crank driving shaft, a pair of striker bars pivotally mounted on said frame and provided with oppositely projecting arms, a reciprocating cross-head, a pitnian connecting said-crosshead to the crank of said driving shaft, links connecting said cross-head to said arms 'of said striker bars, hammers provided with shanks pivotally mounted on said striker bars, springs disposed between said hammer shanks and striker bars. 7 7

In a structure of the class described, the combination of a frame, a crank driving shaft, a pair of striker bars pivotally mountedon said frame and provided with oppositely projecting arms, 7 a reciprocating cross-head,a pitman connecting said crosshead to the crank of said driving shaft, links connecting-said cross-head to said arms of said striker bars, and hammers mounted on said striker bars.
12. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a frame adapted to be mounted on a member to be driven and provided with a pair of impact members, a pair of pivotally mounted striker bars, a crosshead reciprocatingly mounted on said frame,
links connecting said cross-head to said striker bars whereby they are operated in opposite directions, hammer heads provided striker bars and hammer shanks.

In a structure of the class described, the combination of a'frame, a pair of pivotally mounted striker bars, a cross-head reciprocatingly mounted on said frame, links connecting said cross-head to said striker bars whereby they are operated in opposite directions, hammer heads provided with shanks pivotally mounted on said striker bars, and springs interposed between said striker bars and hammer shanks.

In a structure of the class described, the combination of a frame, a pair of pivotally mounted striker bars, a cross-head reciprocatingly mounted on said frame, links connecting said cross-head to said striker bars whereby they are operated in opposite directions, hammers mounted on said striker bars, a motor mounted on said frame, and driving connections from said motor to said cross-head.

In a structure of the class described, the combination of a frame, a pair of'pivotally mounted strik'erbars, a cross-head reciprocatingly mounted on said frame, links connecting said cross-head to'said striker bars whereby they are operated in opposite directions, and hammers mounted on said striker bars.
16.111 a structure of the class described, the combination of a frame, a crank driving shaft, a pair of striker bars mounted on said frame to oscillate about a common aXis and provided with arms disposed oppositely on opposite sides of said axis, a cross-head reciprocatingly mounted on said frame, links connecting said cross-head to said arms of said striker bars, a pitman connecting said cross-head to said crank shaft, hammer heads provided with shanks pivotally mounted on said strikerbars, and springs interposed between said striker bars and hammer shanks.

the combination of a frame, a pair of striker.

19. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a frame, a plurality of hammers carried by said frame, means for 10 actuating the said hammers connected thereto to operate the same simultaneously and alternately in opposite directions whereby a counter balance structure is secured.
