STORAGE-TANK,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patel when; time c, rem.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES C. FARDON,
ger the tank or its contents as where lightning might ignite the escaping gas and cause fire.
A further object of this invention is to provide a tank with a lealoproot joint between the roof and the wall of saidtank, it being well known that it is commonly a great loss and annoyance when the-joint between the roof and tank is unsealed.
.With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming phrt of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure l'illnstrates a view in elevation of a tank with the vent tubes, the supports for the vent tubes being shown in section; and Fig. Qillustrates a vertical sectional view of a fragment of the tank showing the roof and the joint between the root and the tank. in these drawings 3 denotes a tank, 4: the usuai board or plank covering for the '-tank, 5 the sheathing or metal covering for the wooden portion of the root, the said sheathin 5 extending beyond the wall of the said tank and embracing the flange 6 of the angle iron 7, the said angle iron having one wing 8 thereof lying parallel with the "side of the tank and secured thereto by fastenings 9 which may be in the form of bolts rivets or the like. It is probably preferable, althougi'i not essential 1n all instances, that a packing 10 be interposed between the angle iron and the wall of the receptacle so to prevent formationv cit crevices or poo els in which gas might lodge.
The sheathing 5, as stated, embraces the edge of the flange (3 and the sheathing is secured to the said flange by the iastenings it which may comprise bolts, rivets or the like.
, The metal covering is then caused to em brace the angle iron and the opposite edge of the metal covering is bent to lie between the angle iron and the tank and it is clamped in place and firmly held by the tagtenings which are employed tosecure the angle iron to the tank. It is preferable also to utilize a metal covering 13 for embracing the angle iron 7, so as to obviate the formation 01 pockets for the collection of gas and as a further means for sate-guarding the structure against leaksand the formation of pockets, the space incloscd by the angle iron and the metal covering is supplied with a filler l-l consisting of an asphalt prepara tion. v
Fron'i the foregoing,,it will be seen that, in view of: the Itaet that the usual pocket formed by the angle iron (5, is tilled by the material 14, which is held in position by the asbestos 13, any danger of gas which might leak from the tank and collect at this point is obviated, thereby lessenin f the liabilit of explosion or fire, due to lightning igniting esc: ping gas.
.li claim l. A storage tank having a root including a metal covering therotor, an angle iron secured to the tank ear its upper end, the said covering being extended to en'ibraee the edge of a flange of the angle iron, means for securing the covering to the said ai'igle iron, a metal member secured to the root and embracing the angle iron and having its edge il'llklPOSQCl between the said angle iron and the tank, and a filler between the metal member and the angle iroin 2. A storage tank having a root including a metal covering therefor, an angle iron:
- secured to the tank near its upper and, the I sand covering bemg extended 10 embrace the of the of the zmg ie iron means for secur-m the covemn to the smd an le b 1 L EK'OD, a metal member secuyea w L118 lOOI and Lm'biucing the ang'm iron and having its edge; int rpnsed between the said angle iron and ihe tank, and suitable insulation and crevice filling material associated with the tank, angle iron and metal member.
In testimony whereof, I hereunm affix my 15 siglmiaura in the presence of two 'witnes es.
