IMPROVEMENT IN FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,855, dated December 12, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN G. DEvoE, of Fredericktown, in the county of Knox and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of al fence, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a side View of the fence, or rather of one panel of the fence. Fig. 2 represents the fence-posts. Fig. 3 is a plan view of an end of one of the rails. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of the top rail, and Fig. 5 is a vertical section of one of the rails, showing a modication of the same.
A A represent the rails of my fence, made of sheet-iron or of bars rolled from the linishingrolls, and corrugated longitudinally with any size or shape or corrugations as may be desired, and of any length required .to form or make a stift' bar or strip for fencing, either as pickets or as rails, as represented in the drawing. The top rail in the fence is formed with a cap, a, as shown in Fig. 4, so as to make a perfect iinish to the fence, it being a part of the upper rail. Where more strength is required the upper and lower edges of the rail may be turned over so as to inclose a wire running the entire length of the rail, as shown in Fig. 5. The ends of the rails are bent, as shown in Fig. 3, and inserted in a vertical groove, b, in the fence-post. The fenceposts are each made in two parts, B and G. The
lower end of the part B, which is inserted in the ground, is made hollow and filled with stone, gravel, and coal-pitch or any other article which will cement the stone solid in the center. The entire post is made of iron, and the upper end of the part B above ground is grooved on the side where the rails are fastened to correspond with the corrugations on the bars or rails A A. The part O is constructed in the same manner as the part B, except that it does not extend down into the ground, and its lower end is forked to iit over a stirrup, d, attached to the part B, so that when the rails are put in their places and the short part put on the stirrup the two parts may be clamped together at their upper ends by a creased washer, D, slipping over the top, thus forming a solid post. A knob or tap, c, is then screwed on the top of each post to hold the clamping washer firmly in position.
Having thus fully described my in ventlon, what Y l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination ofthe grooved post B, having a hollow base filled with cemented stone or other suitable material, the grooved post C, the stirrup d, creased washer l), and knob or tap e, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The within-described fence, consisting ot' the corrugated sheet-metal rails A A, grooved posts B G with stirrups d, creased washers l), and knobs or taps e, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
