Description

CLIFFORD T. SAPPINGTON, OF FREDERICK, MARYLAND.
RECT-AL APPLICATOB.
Specification or ietters Patent.
Application filed J'annary 24, 1917. Serial No. 144,153. i
of this character, which is constructed from an integral piece of material and so shaped as to carry thereupon a sheet of gauze or other unguent carrying material and to be naturally maintained within the rectum, so that the unguent is applied to the affected parts in the rectal canal, while the outer end coiiperates with the outer sphincter muscle,
to prevent the unguent from soiling the clothes.
The present applicator is so constructed as to be easily inserted and withdrawn, and is provided with a flexible soft shank, approximately the full length or slightly greater than the rectal canal, while upon one end is an egg-shaped inserting head, for disposition beyond the inner sphincter muscle, the other end being provided with a disk shaped head, for disposition exteriorly of the outer sphincter muscle.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a diagrammatical sectional view through the rectum, showing the normal position of the present applicator.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the applicator, with the unguent carrying gauze in section.
Fig. 8 is a longitudinal section through the complete applicator with the gauze attached.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates the gauze carrying member, which is made of solid rubber, with the core 6 having a covering of comparatively soft rubber and constructed so that the shank 7 is slightly flexible with a soft surface, so as not to injure the rectal canal, due to any involuntary contraction of the muscles about the shank. The inserting head 8, which is egg-shaped with the point at theterminal,
is integral with the shank and is composed of the same material, while the integral disk 9, upon the opposite end is formed with the curved portion 10, which makes the shank Copies of this patent may be obtained for side of the disk slightly conical, and provides a face for contact with the outer portion of the outer sphincter muscle.
The shank 7 is made preferably the length, or slightly longer, than the rectal canal, so
Patented Mar. 6, 1917.
that the inner sphincter muscle will contact r the curved portion 11, at the junction between the head 8 and the shank 7, the inner and outer sphincter muscles, thus 00- acting to hold the shank its length adjacent to the rectal canal.
The unguent carrying member 12, is preferably asheet of gauze or other absorbent material, and is' adapted to be placed upon the member 5, with the edges 13 flared outwardly by the disk head 9.
Thus when the applicator-has been inserted in the rectum, the portion of the gauze carryingthe unguent and about the shank will supply the sameto the walls of the rectal canal, and the two heads 8 and 9, due to the positions thereof, relatively to the inner and-outer sphincter muscles will maintainthe applicator in such desirable posi-' tion. The applicator is readily removed, and the gauze removed, and thrown away, while the member 5 may be washed with water and an antiseptic, so that a sanitary applicator is provided.
\Vhat I claim, as new, is
1. A rectal applicator comprising a relatively soft pliable body having a shank, and a head upon each end, and an unguent carrying sheet of absorbentmaterial removably surrounding said body. V
'2. A rectal applicator comprising a relatively soft pliable body having a shank, and two heads,.one upon each end, andv an unguent carrying sheet of absorbent material surrounding one head and the shank, and having its edges flared outwardly by the other head. 7 V
3. A rectal applicator comprising a relatively soft pliable body having an integral shank, eg shaped and disk shaped ends, and an unguent carrying sheet of absorbent material covering the egg-shaped end and the shank and having its edges flared out- 'wardly by the disk-shaped end.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
