CAR-BRAKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 6,1917.
Application filed July 14, 1916. Serial No. 109,352.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLAIR P. RICE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Slayton, in the county of Murray and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Car-Brakes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved car brake, in which the brake blocks are applied to the rails instead of to the wheels and are arranged for operation by means of the usual air brake apparatus orother suitable means.
The invention consists in the features of construction, combination, and arrangement of devices, hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a railway car provided with brake apparatus constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention. F
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same.
Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of the brake apparatus.
Fig. 4 is a detail view.
In the embodiment of my invention, I provide brake blocks 1 which are adapted to be applied directly to the rails 2 and are here shown as each provided in its lower side with a longitudinal groove 3 adapted to receive the rail and the bottom of which is curved upwardly at the ends as at 4 to facilitate the passage of the blocks over the joints between the rails.
Each block is provided at one end with a pair of links 5 which are pivotally connected thereto as at 6,,the links being pivotally connected by fixed pivots 7 to beams 8 of the car or other suitable portions of a car frame.
A rock shaft 9 is also provided which is mounted in suitable bearings 10 and is arranged transversely of the car at a point a suitable distance from the pivots 7 and is provided at the sides of the car with downwardly extending rock arms 11. Each rock arm is connected by a pair of links 12 to one of the brake blocks, the said links being pivotally connected to the rock arms as at 13 and being pivotally connected as at 14 to the ends of the brake blocks opposite the links 5, said links 5 and 12 extending upwardly and in opposite directions from the brake blocks. A spring 14. is provided which is connected to the rock arms and to the car and serves to turn the rock shaft in one direction to cause its rock arms to move in the required direction to cause the links to lift the brake blocks above the track rails.
The rock shaft is also provided with a lever arm 15 which is connected by a rod 16 to a brake lever 17. Said brake lever is pivot ally mounted under the car as at 18, operates in a guide 19 and is connected to the piston rod 20, of an air brake cylinder 21. Hence, when air enters the cylinder through the pipe 23 it exerts force on the piston head 23 and the brake lever is actuated thereby and turned in the direction required to cause the rock shaft to turn against the tension of the springs and thereby cause the rock arms and the links to force the brake blocks downwardly and engage them directly on the rails and hence stop the car or train. A stop 22 is provided to limit the braking movement of the brake lever.
Within the scope of my invention, any suitable means may be employed to operate the brake lever.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. In a car brake, a rock shaft mounted in hearings in car frame members and having rock arms and also provided with a lever arm, in combination with a brake lever connected to said lever arm to turn the rock shaft, a pair of track brake elements, links pivotally connected to the car frame members and also to said track brake elements, and links extending oppositely to the first named links and pivotally connected to said track brake elements and directly to the rock arms.
2. In a car brake,a rock shaft mounted in bearings in car frame members and having a rock arm in combination with means to turn the shaft in one direction, a track brake element, a pair of oppositely extending links pivotally connected to opposite ends of the.
