sons to accurately part the hair along an imaginary line or lines and dress the same so that such hair 'asis at one side of said line will extend in a-welldefined direction with respect to hair at the other side of said line; to provide devices of the character described which will successfully be used by persons whose eyesight has been destroyed or impaired and who find it impossible to direct a line of vision through the lenses of spectacles or eye-glasses into a mirror in order to visually determine the result of bringing a comb or brush in use, or where the hair to be parted is out of the usual line of vision even when a person is capable of using a mirror; and, to provide devices of the character described which are inexpensive to manufacture, easily manipulated, and which remain in good repair for a considerable length of time.

Another object of my invention is to provide a device to facilitate the parting of hair which may be positioned in engagement with the hair at any portion of the head, and in no way restricted to use with respect to other features of the head, such as the ears.

Further objects of my invention will appear in the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying myV invention shown applied to i the hair of a head.

In the drawing, where similar characters refer to similar parts throughout the views,

A designates a fiat strip of material such as celluloid, whalebone, or vulcanized rubber which may be; iiexed longitudinally but which resists transverse flexure to any material extent ;`B'a similar strip of flexible material; and C, means pivotally connecting ysaid strips of materials A and B with the longitudinal edge 'of vone confronting the longitudinal `edge of the other, but permitting'either strip to be swung with such edges out of confronting relation for the purpose hereinafter set forth.

Referring first to the strips A and B, one faceof each strip visjpref'erably beveled as at 5, at a longitudinal edge, the edges at such bevels being those which are normally in confronting relation asis clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing.v e

,As to the means C, which serve as a coupling betweenvthe strips A and B, it may comprise a hinge leaf 6 secured to the strip A as by rivets 7; a hinge leaf 8 secured to a face of strip B as by rivets 9; a coupling member 10 intermediate the leaves 6 and 8 and lying transversely of strips A and B; and, pintles -11 and 12,-the formerof which connects leaf 6 with coupling member 10, and thev latter connecting leaf 8 with said coupling member, the pintles 1l and 12 extending with their axes longitudinally of the strips A and B. Vhen said strips A 'and B are beveled as at 5, the means C over lies the faces provided with said bevels as is clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing. It is preferred to 'dispose the means C midway of the ends of strips A and B.

``When bringing the device into use, the hair is initially brushed or otherwise arranged to extend in the direction substantially parallel to an imaginary line, whereupon the device is placed in engagement with the hair, the faces with which the coupling has connection being outermost. The strips A and B are arranged so that their confronting edges lie longitudinally of the imaginary line where the part is to be'imade, whereupon one of the strips, in the example shown, that designated B, is raised, the other strip A held so as to conform substantially to the curvature of the head. With the strip B arranged so that its edge does not confront the complementary edge of the strip A, a comb'or brush may be used in dressing or arranging the hair to one side of the strip A, as is clearly shown in Fig. l

This is followed by swinging the strip B into engagement with the hair, retaining the hair thus arranged in place, the strip A being swung upwardly exposing the hair to the other side of the imaginary line and enabling the user to comb or brush the hair so as to extend in a well defined direction with respect to that to the other side of the imaginary line.v By beveling the strip as at 5, the bristles of a brush, or the teeth of a comb, are guided. to engage the exposed hair adjacent the device, facilitating the parting of the hair.

I claim 1. A device to facilitate the parting of hair comprising in combination, two flat strips of material capable of being 'flexed longitudinally, and means for pivotally 'connecting said strips oli material substantially midway of their ends, normally disi posing the edge of one confronting the edge of the other, but permitting either strip to be swung with such edges out of confronting relation.
