Description
T. E. nous. RAILWAY RAIL FASTENER.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 1'. ms.
v Patented Mar. 6, 1917;
UNT' E. DOUB, OF ROCHELLE, ILLINOIS.
RAILWAY-RAIL FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 6, 1917.
Application filed November 7, 1916. Serial No. 129,999.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TALMAGE E. DoUB, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Rochelle, in the county of Ogle and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Rail Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to railways and has particular reference to new and useful improvements in rail fastening devices.
The primary object of my invention isto provide a rail fastening device which may be applied to the standard railway rail and tie now in use without disturbing the road bed or otherwise changing the structure of the railway tie or rail.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which, while being applicable to the standard railway tie and rail now in-use may be adapted for use in connection with a particular form of tie such as a metal tie at this time being widely used.
My invention contemplates the provision of a railway tie and rail clamp which may be disposed upon a tie in engagement with a rail by merely removing the spikes now in use. A more accurate gage adjustment may be provided and an absolute retention of the gage afforded. The device is not only intended to fasten the rail against lateral displacement or spreading but may also be employed to prevent undue longitudinal movement of the rail.
Other objects and advantages not hereinbefore set forth will appear from the followin detailed description and the claims, tafien with an inspection of the accompanying drawing, in which: a
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fastening device embodying the improvements of my invention, a rail and tie'being shown in dotted lines; and
Fig. 2 is a top plan view device of my invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, wherein similar characters of reference designate like and corresponding parts throughout the various views, my improved fastener includes a pair of U-shaped frames F and F, the same having top portions 10 and 11 and side tie engaging portions 12 and 13.
The side portions 12 and 13 are provided of the fastening with lugs 1 1 and 15, respectively, certain of the lugs being threaded to receive the thread ed extremities of clampingrods l6 and 17, said rods having squared heads 18 and 19, respectively, and enlargements 20', said on largements being adapted to engage certain of the lugs mentioned. The clamping rods 16 and 17 preferably operate from opposite lrections so that the clamping action of the same will be evenly distributed when applied to a rail.
A pair of rail engaging jaws are provided, designated 21 and 22 in their entireties, said jaws being integrally formed with the frames F and F and extending. laterally in opposite directions therefrom. The rail engaging jaws 21 and 22 are preferably angular in cross-section similar to the standard splice bar now in use. This shapeis preferred in view of the fact that by extending the same said jaws maybe employed at joints for connecting abutting rail ends.
To prevent lateral displacement of the frames F and'F' the sides 12 and 13 thereof are provided with apertures 23 through which fastening lag bolts 24 may be engaged, the lag bolts engaging with the wood of the tie, a tie being shown in dotted lines and designated T. I
In applying my improved rail fastener to a tie, one of theframes F or F is placed upon the tie adjacent the rail and the other'frame on the opposite'side of the rail. The rods may' now be inserted for clamping the jaws 21 and 22 against the rail. After the proper gage has been reached'the lag bolts may be inserted thereby firmly retaining the frame against any accidental movement whatsoever! It will be readily apparent that by slightly elongating the jaws 21 and 22 and providing the same with openings, splice bars may be afforded for connecting abutting. rail, ends.
FrOmJthe above descriptiontaken con.- nection with the accompanying drawing, it
.is thought that a clear and'comprehensive understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of my' invention may be had, and while I have shown and described the device as embodying a specific structure, I desire that it be. understood that such changes may be made in said structure as do notdepart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a rail fastener, the combination of ,U-shaped tie engaging frames having oppositely disposed jaw members to engage a rail, said frames having lugs, screw clamping 'elements engageable through said lugs to clamp said frames against a rail, and means engageable with the tie through said frames.
2. In a rail fastener, the combination of U-shaped tie engaging frames having side portions, rail engaging jaws formed on said frames and oppositely disposed, said frames having lugs extending from the side portions thereof, screw clamping members engageable through certain of the lugs to draw said frames together, the side portions of said frames having apertures therein through Copies of this patent may be obtained for date means for engagement with the tie.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature .o
hereto.
TALMAGE E. DOUB.
