Description

, W'. ROBERTS. MACHINE FOR ASSEMBLING MATCH BOOKS APPLICATION FILED APR. 1. 1916. ,l
Patented Maux 6 r... ANNI? `ment of the' turret `10 the positioning structure is advanced 'a quarter turn. Thebody 15 is provided with radial pockets dial' metrically opposite to each other, and also with a passage way Q3 extending diametrically through the body at right angles to the pockets, as seen most clearly.y ing-Fig. 4. ln the present instance the body is of sufficient length to provide two corresponding 'alining pockets on euch side'thereof, and also two alining through passage ways at right an*v gles to Said pockets in order to-ac -.o1nnioda te the pairs of bookmatches successively ejected from the turretlll and ,imposed on the supporting plate 11 of the bookmaking machine, as seen'in'lrig. 2.
-The structure l5 is mounted to rot-ate with its periphery adjacent the supporting plate so that the pockets and passage vqays are successively ,presented to the path of the books on said plate. Hence the consecutive pairs of books as they are pushed from the lateare received b the o )osinc' pocketsor passageways of the positioning structure and bodily transported thereby. Lilie books contained in the pockets are maintained therein until the rotary structure makes three quarter-turns, in which l case the pockets containing the books occnpl-Y a, position vertically below the axis of rotation 4,of the structure,- whereupon suchbooks,
narrow ends downward, vdrop from the pockets; but the books contained in the through L .lssages remain therein only during one quarter turn of the rotary structure, in which case the passages being in vertical position permit the contained books to graviy tate freely therefrom, larger -ends downiso Ward.
A segmental guard plate 24 is arranged adjacent the outer peripheral surface the rotary structure, so as to prevent'the accidental egress of the books from the pockets and passage ivay lie/tore. they reach the vertical discharging position. This .plate is conveniently .supportedl on an underlying horizontal trough 25 into which the successive pairs of match books are delivered by the positioning structure. Itis to be noted that in'lech rotation of this structure the oper( ends of tlie through passage Way 'are iorred to receive the4 book-1natches in 'alternation with the oppositely-disposed -pgcoltsgand hence the succeeding pairs of f are discharged from the positioning y dmctpe intc the trough in reversed positioniis to their ends. ,Arranged within the trogh is a plunger ,head 26 which is connected by means of a rod 27 with a depending bracket arm 28 on the reciprocating sage.
BESTAVAILABLE COP .moved against the. opposing matchboolrs to advance them aloner the trmigh.
' The receiving portion oi' the trough is provided longitudinally thereof with suitably-spaced spring strips if) which afford two parallel chambers of app1'rp1iate ividih for the two rows ot' match hooks as they are progressively advanced by. the plungers. These strips are spaced sutliciently to bear against the opposing edges ol kthe articles and maintain them in upright position. The ends of the strips adjacent the plunger are beveled andyieldable laterally, as at 30, so as to act in conjunction with the plunger as vertical guides for the articles as they are delivered t'o thetrough, and vet permit the advancement ot the articles y the plunger.
I claim* 1. In a machine for assembling bookinatches and the like, a rotary article positioning member having an art 1lc receiving pz .sage rextending diametrically theretlnongh and having also independent radial article receiving pockets in spaced relation to said passage.
2. vIn a machin@ for assembling be inatch'es and the like, the combination wit.; a. receptacle, of means for delivering articles1 thereto with their corresponding ends in opposite relation to each other, said means comprisin a rotary member having radialpockets.diametrically opposite to but separated from each other, and having also a longitudinal passage extending diametrically through said member in plane at right angles to the said pockets, means for rotating said member, and ans for i gressively.introducing articles to said pi ets and to the respective en ds of the pas 3. lnl a. machine for assembling bookmatches and the like, the combination with an intermittentl rotatable turret and means for ejecting articles therefrom, .'of a. rotary article positioning meniberarranged to re ceive the articles ejected from they turret, and gearing between said turret and posi-I tioning member whereby the latter is rotated .in one direction only, said member comprising a body having an article receiving passage extending .diametrically' therethrough,
and having also independknt radial artile' receiving pockets in spaced relation toA said passage. A
