Be it known that I, J OSEPH LOUIS PAN ooAs'r, a citizen of the United States, resid- I ing at Trenton, in the county of Mercer, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looking.

Bolts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates'to locks and latches and has special reference to a locking bolt peculiarly adapted for use in looking shutters and other outside house closures which are apt to be interfered with by unauthorized persons.

a device of this description which is so arof the operating handle will lock the bolt firmly in such engagement.

Another object of the invention is to provide a locking device for sliding the bolt which is adapted for use in connection with a bolt so arranged within its casing that no rotative movement of the bolt is possible, thus preventing releasing of the locking device by unauthorized persons as can readily be done by the ordinary form of sliding and rotating bolts.

With the above and other objects in view, as will be hereinafter apparent the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and specifically claimed.

Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device applied to a pair of shutters; the major portion of said shutters being broken away and only those portions directly adjacent the bolt and its keeper being shown;

The invention as herein disclosed is shown as applied to a pair of shutters A although it is obvious that the bolt may be used in v tated therein. One object of this lnvention is to provide 7 connection with any two objects of like character such as a doorand its jamb, a window and its casing or the like.

The invention itself consists of a casing 1O the main portion of which is polygonal 1n cross section and from the edges of this casing project the flanges 11 by means of which the casing is supported against the shutter. Through these flanges 11 extend the screws 12 to secure the casing to the shutter. This casing is furthermore provided on its front side with a slot 13 extending longitudinally of the casing. Slidable within the casing 10 is a bolt 14 which conforms in cross section to the cross section of the casing so thatvit can not be ro- Fixed to this bolt 14 is a U-shaped pivotloop or staple 15 and the bight of this staple projectsthrough the slot 13,. gPivotally-mounted on this staple 15'is an operating handle 16 which may be swung'into horizontal position to move the bolt, and which, when released will drop under the influence ofgravity until the handle assumes the position shown in Fig. 3, the lower end of the handle resting against the lower part of the casing. -Projecting from this handle 16 is a lug 17 which is provided on its upper surface with one or more teeth 18. .When the handle is in the position shown in Fig. 3 the lug will project beneath the casing and the teeth 18 will engage one or more. of the teeth 19 formed on the under side of the casing. Both of the sets of teeth are preferably V-shaped although other forms may be'used, if desired.

At 20 is shown a'keeper which is of suitable shape and size to receive the ends of the bolt 14: when in locked position.

In operation, let it be supposed that the bolt is open or in unlocked position. The handle 16 is then raised until the handle is brought to horizontal position when the bolt may be slid forward into the keeper. When engaged in the keeper the handle is released and will drop to the position shown in Fig. 3 so that the

18 and 19 engage and prevent movement of the bolt ineither direction. It is to be noted that the teeth 19 extend along the underside of'the casing to a length sufficient to enable'the teeth 18 to engage therewith at any point in the movement of the bolt and thus the locking of the bolt is entirely accomplished by gravity.

There has thus-been provided a simple and efficient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.

It is obvious that many minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.

l/Vhat is claimed is 1. In combination, a casing having a slot formed in its outer side, a bolt slidable in the casing, a handle pivoted to the bolt for vertical swinging movement and projecting through the slot, a series of teeth projecting downwardly from the under side of the casing, and a toothed lug on the handle, extending beneath the casing with its toothed portion engaging the casing teeth upon depression of the handle.

2. In combination, a casing polygonal in cross-section and having a slot formed in its outer side, a bolt slidable in the casing, a handle pivoted to the bolt for vertical swinging movement and projecting through cross-section and having a slot formed in its outer side and extending longitudinally of the casing, a polygonal bolt slidably fitted in the casing, a pivot loop fixed to the bolt and projectng through the slot, an operating and locking handle pivoted on the loop and arranged to be positioned horizontally to operate the bolt and vertically to lock the bolt, V-shaped teeth formed on the under side of the casing, and a lug on the handle arranged to project beneath the casing when the handle is in vertical position, said lug being toothed to engage the teeth on the casing.
