IMPROVEMENT IN MINERS squuas.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,783, dated December 12, 1871.
in the art to make and use the same, reference be-.
ing had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of th1s specification.
This invention relates'to a new and useful mprovement in squibs for the use of miners in the process of blasting coal, rock, &c.; audit-com sists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents the form of the paper-for making the tube. Fig. 2 is a View of a squib partly in section. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of a squib constructed according to my invention.
Similar letters of referenceindicate correspondin g parts,
A is the squib; A, the paper, out as seen in Fig. 1, with one end saturated with a solution of saltpeter, and dried, and then the beveled side is covered with mucilage or paste, so that when the paper is rolled into a tube, as seen in the drawing, the edge will adhere. The paper A is rolled around a tapering piece of iron or other material of suitable size and form. 0 represents the powder with which the tube is filled. D is the match, which is properly prepared, and may be rolled in the end of the tube, as seen in the drawing, or attached to the end of the tube in any other suitable manner. The powder is prevented from escaping from the end of the tube by means of the stopper E of soap or other suit able material in the end, as seen. The squib may he dipped in liquid sulphur to render it more inflammable, if desired.
The squib is used for the purpose of throwing fire through the small opening left in a cartridge yery imperfectly prepared and with materialunsuited to the purpose. My object is to furnishthese squibs as perfect .as they can be made of the most suitable materials, and have them ready for use in mining and other districts.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-.
As' a new and improved article of manufacture the squib A, substantially as and for the purposes describcd.
