Description

A. J. BERGEN.
Cartridge.
No. 62,467. Patented Feb. 26,1867.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER BERGEN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN PRIMING- METALLIC CARTRIDGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 62,467, dated February 26, 1867.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALEXANDER J. BERGEN, ofBrooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented, in ade, and applied to use a certain new and useful Improvement in Cartridges; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of my said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a shotcartridge fitted with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a section of the metallic case; and Fig. 3 is a detached section of the fulminate-nipple.
Similar marks denote the same parts.
Cartridges have heretofore been made with the tube containing the fulminate, and they have also been made with a central cavity or hole to receive a'cap that is exploded by a blow upon the central rear end of the cartridge. A. central teat has also been employed, projecting from the rear end of the cartridge, as seen in Letters Patent granted January 5, 1864, No. 41,184.
The nature of my said invention consists in a movable fulminatenipple projecting from the rear end of and in combination with a cartridge-case formed with a cavity in the rear end into which said fulminate-nipple is inserted. By this construction the explosion is effected by a blow on the 'side of the projeetin g nipple, and the flash is directed into the cartridge upon the central portion of the powder, and the flame cannot escape because the pressure of the gases tends to make the nipple tighter within the cavity of the case, and the with either a flat or dome-shaped base, I),
and with the flange, c, as seen in Fig. l, or I without it, as seen in Fig. 2. and said cartridge is to be adapted to any desired size or character of fire-arm and to the reception of a ball or of shot or slugs.
0 is a central cavity pressed into the base of the cartridge-case, and having a small opening for the flame from the detouatin g material to reach the powder.
1' is the fulminatenipple, of a size to set tightly within the cavity 0, and of a length to project sufficientl y to allow of the hammer striking the side of the nipple and exploding the fulminate.
By this construction the cartridge-case does not receive any strain or concussion from the hammer, and hence does not require to be of heavy metal.
What I claim, and desire'to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A movable fulminate nipple, projecting from the rear end of and in combination with a cartridge-case, formed with a cavity in the rear end for the reception of said nipple, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature this 23d day of October, A. D. 1866.
A. J. BERGEN.
