Description

F. w. BROWN. I ADJUSTABLE SAW SETTING DEVICE.v
APPLICATION FILED AUG.26. 1915.
1,217,697. Emma-Feb. 27,', 19171v y /Q FRANK W. BROWN, OF BELDING, MICIVIIGAN.
ADJUSTABLE SAW-SETTNG- DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent. latntd 27, 1917- Applicaton filed August 28, 1915. i Serial No. 47,443.
To all whom t may concern: lle it knownthat I, FRANK W. BRowN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beldinv' in the countv of Ioni'a. lState of' Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Saw- Setting Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de-V scription of the invention, suoli as will enand of the type includinghandor circular saws. lt is the object of the present invention to provide such a device wherein provision is made for adjusting both the degree of inclination and the length of the set imparted to the teeth, and it is more specifically anA object to provide such a device wherein these adjusting means are associated therewith in an exceedingly simple manner conducive to economy in manufacture.
It is further an object to provide such a device wherein the various adjustments named may be made in a ready and easy manner.
With the above and other objects and ad-y vantages in view, the invention resides in the novel combination, formation and arrangement of parts as more fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the appended claims.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings, wherein similar characters of relerence designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure l is a side elevation of the improved saw setting device.
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view therethrough.
F ig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on line 8 3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4C is a perspective view of Vone of the guides for regulating the depth of the seth .eferring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the improved device is shown as comprising a rectangular base member or body block 5 at the central portions of the sides of which are provided upstanding ears 6 between which are pivoted by meansof the bolt 7 a ybar 8 which has its ends enlarged to :torni setting heads 9 .and 10, respectively, the head 9 being adapted to vtreat cross cut sawsand having a squared end and having its bottom beveled as at 11 to contactY with the upper surface of the tooth to be set. The head l() is adapt ed to saivs such as hand saws havingtriangular teeth, and has its en'd beveled at'12. Disposed onthe under portions'of the body bar are. plates'l which terminate short of the ears and havetheir portions under the head members beveled at .14C so that a saw may be placedv on one of said plates and the respective head struck alight blow with a hammer' to set the teeth. The heads are normallyheld in horizontal alinement by coil lsprings l5 disposed thereunder and hav- -ing their ends engaged in sockets 16 in the head and adjacent portionsof lthey body.
For adjusting the angular portion ofthe saw with relation to these plates y13 and to thus adjust the angle or degree of set iinparted to the saw blade, a screw 18'is threadedly passed vertically through each rend of the block and through the outer ends of said plates, these bolts thus .serving also as the securing means of the outer ends of the plates 13. The inner ends of the plates ,are held against lateral displacement on the body block and at the same time a securing means is provided for a suitable base block 20 for the device by means of bolts 21 which are passed through the block and threaded inthe body and having theirl threaded ends threadedly extended into bores 22 provided in the inner ends of the plates 13, the heads of these bolts 21 seating in a longitudinal groove in the bottom ofthe base block.
To provide a means for adjusting Vthe depth of the set imparted to the saw teeth, a pair of guide arms 23 are vprovided for the side of each head portionA 9 and the adjacent portion of the body 5 is provided with an elongated slot24 through which and through the lower ends of the arms is passed a bolt 25 carrying at one end a Wingnut 26 whereby the arms may be clamped against the body, the head of this bolt seating in a cutaway portion 27 in the lower endof the respect-ive arm. The arms are held in upright position by square bosses 28 on their lower ends which project into recesses 29 formed in the sides of the body block adjacent the slots.
The heads 9 and 10 are slightly less in width than the body block so `that they may move freely between said arms.
A device has thus been provided which will efficiently perform the functions set forth and which is capable of full adjustment to meet various conditions, and which further has its parts so arranged and so coaeting as to form a structure of maximum simplicity.
The corners of the base black 2O are preferably provided with spike members 50 whereby the bloclrmay be securely fastened on anyv desired surface.
WVhile l have illustrated and described a particular embodiment of my invention, I have merely done so for the sake of convenience and I do not wish to be limited to that particular embodiment as it is obvious that numerous changes may be made in the details of construction thereof Without iu any Way departing from the scope of the appended claims.
WThat I claim is:
l. ln a saw set7 a body block, a setting Copies of this patent may be obtained for Aon said `arms extending into the recesses and a Clamping bolt passed through said arms Y and through the ls'lot.
2. n a saw set, a body block, a setting head pivotally lmounted over said body block, said block having` a setting,` surface under the head, guide arms adjustably disposed at the side yof the body, means to clamp said arms in adjusted position, and means to prevent rotation Vof the arms when clamped.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, inthe presence of two witnesses.
