Be it known that I, PATRICKYF. FOLEY, a citizen of .the United States, and resident of the borough of Brooklyn, county of. city and State off New York, have locking devices which may be used with good results in connection with elevator door locking and controlling apparatus,
such as is covered by my Patent 1,181,217
of May 2, 1916. The locking. device may comprise an angular `slotted door catch adapted to copeiate with a locking rollor' member mounted, for instance, on the jarnb of the door, so that when the doorV is closed the locking member entersthe slotted catch and forces this member and a connected locking bolt transversely through the distance controlled by the closing movement of the door. A detent coperates with the lockpogsition so thatthe door is prevented from opening even though it has not completely closed, and'this is of course a decided advantage, especially in the case of elevator doors. A cushioning device is preferably` associated with the locking bolt so-as. to cushion the closing action of the door and correspondingly minimize jar andnoise.

ln this way when the shaft door is closed the slotted door catch engages the locking roll during the last few inches of the d oors travel and forces the roll and connected locking bolt downwardl` the ratchet teeth slipping past the detent, but preventing any backward movement so that the door catch is locked against retraction as soonns any substantial engagement with the locking member takes place. At the same time the closing movement of the door is retarded or cushioned as soon as the catch and locking member engage7 by the cushioning plunger and cylinder described and also by the return spring 67 which resists this movement, so that under normal conditions the closing impact of the door is considerably reduced and the door is elfectively held in closed or substantially clf'sed position because the locking bolt holds ust as effectively whether the roll has entirely7 or partly7 reached the end of the slot 56. The locking device may be released in any suitable way, either automatically or manually, as for example, a manual releasing lever such as 53 may be mounted on the shaft door so as to swing' about the pivot when operated by the handle 51. The upper slotted end of this lever may engage a suitable pin 61` on the releasing bolt 5st which may as indicated be mounted in the guides or brackets GO secured to the door in such position as to be substantially in line with the extension 59 of the detent bar which may project through a suitable slot in the locking bolt and extend outside the lock casing. ln this way the releasing lever may force back the releasing extension of the detent so as to release the locking bolt and allow its return under the action of return spring and the opening door, the releasing lever being so arranged that by pulling it in the direction ot the terasse arrow in Fig. 2 the locking bolt is released and the door simultaneously opened by the same movement. lt desired, also, the lock may be released `from outside the shaft door by providing a suitable release key, such as ($3, revolubly mounted on the bracket 64 and ha ving` its end projecting through a suitable slot 65 in the door so as to be engaged by a key or opening device and rotate the releasing arm 58 suliciently to force back thev detent extension 5f) and release the dctent from the bolt in the same manner, thus pro viding an emergency release ofthe parts which is desirable 'lor some purposes.
lt is sometimes desirable to provide an automatic releasing arrangement on the elevator car so that when'the car is in proper cooperation with the door opening the locking device may be automatically released and in some cases it is also ot advantage to `arrange a suitable controller in connection with the operating device of the car as described in said patent. For this purpose the locking device may be 'provided with a suitable releasingmember or contact arm cooperating with a cam or releasing device carried by the ele Yator car 'which may, it' desired, be actuated when the car is stopped at one of the door openings so as to release the lock under these conditions. in illustrative arrangement ojt this character is shown in Figs. l and 2 as comprising the releasing contact arm S3 mounted on the detent bar and having a suitable cam portion coperating with the angulaior cam face on the collar 8l so that when this releasing arm is swung inward against its spring 97 as bv Contact between the'cam Q4 and the roll 27 on this Contact arm the cam action forces the detent bar backward so that the ratchet and detent 'are disengaged and thel roll locki ing device is released.
lt is also desirable to have a suitable control switch or device arranged in connectionv with the door locking` device so that when 'the door is closed the elevator may be operated and not otherwise, and it desired, controlling devices such as described in said patent may be used Jfor this purpose, including the wires ticonnected to the cams or contact members 2+, 25 so that when the caris opposite a door opening the controller circuit through these wires may be normally closed by a. suitable lock or door switch, such as 90, shown in Fig. l. This door switch" or contact lever 9() may be pivoted about the point 91- and may have a suitable insulated contact 92 adjustably or otherwise mounted in the svif'it'ch member in such position as be engaged by the projection or oper-ating` lug on the lateral extension 9st of the locking bolt so that when the locking bolt is depressed at thetime the door is locked this switch moves in the direction of arrows so as to separate the switch conllO tacts 89 andbreak the controllerfcircuit at this point. For this arrangement the controller circuit may comprise the .Wires 45 connected to the releasing contact cam 24 ofconducting metal which is preferably insulated from its cam bracket 34. When in en gagement with the releasing contact arm 83 this contact then supplies electricity therethrough to the flexible connection 87 shown in Fig. 2 to the contact piece 88. The contact lever 90 of the door switch which may be spring-actuated as indicated to normally hold the contacts 89 closed is connected by the flexible electric braid or connector 86 to the release contact arm 84 provided with a similar roll 26 which under these conditions is in electric contact with the corresponding contact cam l25 of similar construction.
A generally similar cushioned bolt locking device is shown in Figs. 3 and 4 as adapted for use in locking an ordinary swinging or other door 98 on which, if desired, the lock casing 28 may be mountedas by the screws 144. This lock casing may be provided with guides to accommodate the locking bolt 66 so that it can have vertical movement together with its projecting locking member 139 which may project through a suitable slot 147 and carry the friction roll'or bushing 141 held in place as by the washer57 and screw 140. This.lockin roll maycooperate with a suitably slotte door catch on the door jamb, the plate 137 secured to the door jamb as by the screws 138 being, if desired, formed with the inclined slot 56 with which this roll coperates. vThe locking bolt and roll are normally heldin raised position as bythe return spring 67 forcing them upward into engagement with a suitable-alining device or screw 152 which determines the upper position of this bolt and roll so that in closing the door the roll enters the slotted catch on the j'amb. The further 4closing movement of the door forces the locking bolt downward against theaction of its return spring 67 and this downward movement is preferably further cushioned by a liquid or other cushioning device which may comprise the locking bar 106 on the bolt carrying the cushioning'plunger 108, 109 in the cylinder 107 containing any suitable liquid v114, such as oil, glycerin, etc. The closing movement of this plunger forces liquidi-' through the restricted throttling passage-113 which is shown as somewhat exaggerated in size for the sake of clear-ness and the regulating screw 112 may be adjusted so ais to still further close this passage to the extent de-. sired and insure the correspondin degree of cushioning action found'most esirable with the particular door and conditions of I use. A return valve, such 'as 111, may be used to promote the quick return of the lock' ing bolt and connected parts so that when the bolt and connected plunger are raisedv the liquid quickly passes into the upper vend 115 v of the return passage and-up past this return valve 111. In locking devices for elevator doors, an angularly arranged door catch provided with a slot and adapted to be mounted on an elevator door, acooperating locking bolt having a locking member adapted to cooperate with said slot and Which is adapted to be supported adjacent a door opening, a ratchet formed on said locking bolt, a cushioning device connected to said locking bolt, a return spring tending to restore said locking bolt to receiving position, anda detent cooperating with said ratchet to hold said bolt in locking position and prevent opening movement of said door from an approximately closed position.

In locking devices for elevator doors, a door catch adapted to be mounted on an elevator door, a cooperating locking member, a detent to hold lsaid locking member in locking position, a releasing contact arm revolubly mounted on said detent, a releasing cam on said detent cooperating with said arm to disengage said detent when said releasing arm is actuated and a releasing device adapted to be mounted on the elevator and actuate said releasing arm when the elevator comes into cooperation with the door' opening.

cooperating locking bolt having a locking member adapted to cooperate with said slot, a fluidcushioning device connected to said locking bolt, means connected With said cushioningl device to regulate its cushioning action on the closing of said lockin device, and a detent to hold said bolt in loc ing position.

In locking devices' for doors, an angularly arranged catch, a locking member adapted to cooperate with said catch and be moved transversely during the closing movement of the locking device and a detent cooperating with said locking member to hold' the same locked in a number of positions and prevent opening movement after said locking device has moved into approximately closed position.

In locking devices for elevator doors, a slotted angularly arranged catch adapted to be mounted at an angle to the line of travel of the elevator door, a coperating locking member adapted to ooperate with said catch and to enter and be moved transversely by said slot during the closing move- 'ment of the door, a cushioning return device connected to said locking member tendingl to restore the same to receiving position and a v,detent to hold said locking member lockedin a number of positions.

In lockingdevices for doors, a slotted angularly arranged catch adapted to be mounted at an angle to the line of travel of `the door, a cooperating locking member adapted to coperate with said catch and to enter and be moved transversely by said slot during the closing movement of the door and a detent to hold said locking member locked in a number of positions.
