vViLinAM MENDEL, both citizens of the United States, and residents of Irvingtonand Newark, respectively, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Electric- Light Shades, of which the following is a specification. i
This invention relates to translucent shades of porcelain or the like which are employed with high power incandescent lamps, such as nitrogen lamps, to secure a system of semi-indirect lighting, the lower. part of the bulb being inclosed in a globe shade open at its top and having a disk-like reflector arranged a little distance thereabove around the neck of the bulb.
The objects of the invention are to provide improved supporting means for the globe part of the shade to enable the re-- flector to be fluted or otherwise ornamentally shaped to diffuse the light; to support the globe with least possible obstruction to light; to support said globe so that it will not fall even if the edge of the reflector chips olf; to support the globe fromthe middle of the reflector where it is support- Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same, and.

In the specific embodiment of the inven-. tion illustrated in said drawings, the reference numeral 1 indicates an electric light socket of any suitable or well-known type having thereon the usual shade holder 2 and carrying a lamp or bulb 3. Supported by the shade holder in the usual manner is a reflector 4, which may be of glass, proce- I lain or any other material adapted to the purpose. It is to be noted that this reflector provides at its middle part a neck 5 from which the body portion flares outwardly and downwardly, said neck being adapted to enter the holder 2 an'dhaving an enlarged or flare top 6 beneath which the screws 7. of the holder-project, as is usual. The body portion 8 of the reflector is preferably annular and furthermoreis preferably fluted or undulatory, providing a series of wave-like ridges 9 extending radially of the reflector. These ridges are of greatest height at the periphery of the reflector and diminish in height toward the center, preferably disappearing entirely before reaching the neck ,5. It will be understood that this is the preferred form of the body portion of our reflector, although .it is within the scope of our invention to have it plain cone-shaped or ofany suitable form.
Around the neck 5 of the reflectorv is a ring 10 of any suitable construction and material, and at separated points around this ring, preferably ateven distances'apart, connecting members 11, preferably flexible such as chains, are attachedthereto. These connecting members 11 extend radially of the reflector l and lie each in a hollow or groove 12 between two, ridges ,9. of the reflector, so that they are held by said ridges in proper spaced relation. around the reflector, especially at its periphery. The members 11 bend over the edge or periphery of the reflector, extending below the same, and are connected at their ends to clips 13 upon the globe 1 1. It will be noted that this globe is open at its top, and that the lamp or bulb 3 depends into the same from the socket 1. The globe may be frosted or otherwise made to diffuse the light shining therethrough, and a little space is left between the globeand the reflector to obtain an indirect illumination by reflection.
The clips 13 may be of any kind adapted to suitably engage the beaded rim 15 of the globe and receive the connecting members 11. For purposes of-illustration,' we have shown spring clips which snap ontothe rim and frictionally engage it, providing eyes 16 at their upper ends to detachably receive hooks 17 on the ends of the connecting members 11. Said connecting members being preferably flexible, or chains, as stated, the globe can adjust itself with respect to the reflector and hang freely and naturally. The entire shade will thus. assume a symmetrical appearance automatically, the fluted reflector keeping the connecting members 11 in proper relative position. The ring or band 10 upon the reflector, to which the connecting members are attached, (is preferably cut out of sheet metal and split or divided in any suitable mannerto pass over the neck 5 of the reflector and lie flat upon the body portion 8 of the reflector, as
shown. For illustration, We have shown one end of the ring slotted as at 18 to receive a tongue 19 on the other end, but any other suitable construction might be employed.
By our improved construction there are no screws or other loose and'removable parts to become lost or broken, and the weight of the globe is carried by the ring at the center of the reflector, so that in case the reflector becomes chipped or broken at its edge, the globe is still supported and not allowed to fall. Also, the clips and chains are not conspicuous, adding to rather than detracting from the pleasing appearance of the light shade, and interfering the least possible amount with the radiation and reflection of the light. Furthermore, the reflector, by use of the chains, may be much larger than the diameter of the upwardly open rim of the globe, obtaining greater efliciency in reflection and adapting the light to meet varying conditions and tastes, in that a large or small globe may be used with a reflector and vice versa.
Obviously many detail modifications and changes may be.made in the manufacture of our improved electric light shade without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, and we do not wish to be understoodas limiting ourselves except as required by the following claims when construed in the light of the prior art.
Having thus described the invention, what we claim is 1. An electric light shade comprising in combination a reflector with a neck adapted to receive a lamp socket and be attached thereto, a globe below said reflector, and means extending from adjacent said neck radially of the reflector above the same beyond its edge to the globe for supporting said globe. V
2. An electric light shade comprising in combination a reflector with a neck adapted to receive a lamp socket and be attached thereto, a globe below said reflector, a ring or band around the neck of the reflector, and connecting means extending from said ring over the edge of the reflector for supporting said globe.
3. An electric light shade comprising in combination a reflector with a neck adapted to receive a lamp socket and be attached thereto, a ring or band around said neck, connecting members extending from said band radially oi": the reflector beyond its periphery, and a globe supported by said connecting members beneath the reflector.
4:- An electric light shade comprising in combination a reflector with a neck adapted to receive a lamp socket and be attached thereto, a ring or band around said neck, flexible connecting members extending from said band radially of the reflector beyond its periphery, and a globe supported by said connecting members beneath the reflector.
5. An electric light shade comprising in combination a reflector with a neck adapted to receive a lamp socket and be attached thereto, a globe below said reflector, and means extending from adjacent said neck radially of the reflector and supporting said globe, said means being positioned circumferentially of the reflector by peripheral recesses therein.
6. An electric light shade comprising in combination a radially fluted? reflector, a globe below said reflector, and means retain-ed in position by the flutingsof the reflector for suspending the globe from the reflector.
7. Anelectric light shade comprising in combination a fluted reflector providing an annular series of radially extending ridges and hollows, a globe below said reflector, flexible members lying in said hollows of the reflector and held thereby in spaced relation for supporting said globe, and means extending around the middle part or" said reflector for supporting said members.
8. An electric light shade comprising in combination a fluted reflector providing an annular series of radially extending ridges and hollows and having at its middle an upwardly extending neck, a globe below said reflector, a ring extending around said neck, and'chains carried by said ring and lying in the hollows of said reflector and held thereby in spaced relation for supporting said globe.
