Description

WILLIAM S. BEEBE, JOSEPH T. BAYNES & ABRAHAM A. KING.
Improvement in Knife Cleaners.
No. 121,747. Patented Dec. 12, 1871.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM S. BEEBE, JOSEPH T. BAYNES, AND ABRAHAM A. KING, OF WEST TROY, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN KNIFE-CLEANERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,747, dated December 12, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM S. BEEBE, J osnrn T. Rumors, and ABRAHAM A. KING, of Vest Troy, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Knife-Gleaner; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
Our invention consists of a roller-cleaner for knives, forks, spoon-handles, and the like, in which one elastic-faced roller turns and the other is stationary when the article is pushed in between them, and when it is drawn out the roller which was previously stationary turns and the other is stationary, so that the labor of polishing is divided between the two movements and can be accomplished with less pressure of the rollers than when the polishing is done on both sides at once; or, if the same pressure is maintained, the work will be done better. The invention also consists of a combination of a trough, containing brick-dust or the like, with the lower roller s0 arranged that the dust will be automatically supplied to the roller.
Figure l is an end elevation of our improved cleaner, and Fig. 2 is a front elevation, partly sectioned.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresp 0nding parts.
A and B are elastic-faced rollers, mounted in suitable housings O, the upper one being movable toward and from the other and provided with a spring, I), and adjusting-screw E, for pressing it against the lower one and varying the pressure. Each roller has a journal, F, projecting be yond the housing, and carrying a ratchet-wheel, G, on which a holding-pawl, H, acts to prevent the roller from turning in one direction but they are arranged so that the sides of the roller in contact cannot turn in the same direction, for having one roll with one side of the article pushed in, and the other rub the other side thereof, and viceversa when said article is drawn out, so that one side is polished by one movement and the other by the other movement, thus dividing the labor between the two andlessenin g the power required to push or pull the article considerably. We also propose to have a trough or hopper, I, for holding the powder of emery, brick, or other substance used upon the surface of the rollers to facilitate the poli shin g, so thatit will be automatically taken up by said lower roller and be received by it again as it falls from the roller.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of the polishing-rollers A and B and holding apparatus therefor, adapted to hold them, in such manner that the article will be polished on one side when forced in between them and on the other side when pulled out, all substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with rollers A and B, of the powder-holding trough I, substantially as specified.
WILLIAM S. BEEBE. JOSEPH T. BAYNES. ABRAHAM A. KING.
