To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, GEORGE W. CHAMBER- LAIN", a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of, Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hydraulic Jackets for Hat-Stamping Presses, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to hydraulic jackets for hat stamping presses. j
The primary object'of the invention is the provision of a jacket of this character wherein the same can be usedin an ordinary hand operated hat stamping press so that either straw orcloth hats'can .be successfully pressed or ironed to give thereto a finished appearance.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a hydraulic jacket of this character wherein the construction thereof is novel in form so as to permit a quantity of water to be introduced therein and when placed within a hat stamping press, on the opening thereof the water will gravitate from the crown center of the jacket so as to render said center sufiiciently small for the fitting of a hat thereover. Upon the placing of the upper die upon the press it is brought down into active position relative to the bottom or base die, thereby actingv upon the brim flange of the jacket, causing the displacement of a quantity of the water within the latter into the crown of said jacket, whereupon the pressure throughout the hat is equalized and thus pressing it into finished appearance during the operation of the press.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a hydraulic jacket of this character which is novel in construction so that the same need not be removed from the die when the press is in use and enables the finishing of a hat with despatch when used in the hat stamping press.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a hydraulic jacket for stamp presses which is simple in construc tion, thoroughly reliable and efficient in purpose, strong, durable and inexpensive in manufacture. j
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter exemplified in the construction set forth, and the .scope of the application of which will be indicated in the claims hereunto appended.

Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates the bottom or base die which is of circular or disk formation and is used in the ordinary hand-operated hat stamping press, the peripheral or marginal edge of the said die A being formed with an upstanding rim B, while C designates the upper die, which is also used in the press, both dies A and C being formed with truncated cone centers D as usual, and the said upper die G is adapted to telescope within therim -B of the bottom or base die when the press is in action for the pressing or ironing of a hat to give a finished appearance thereto;
The hydraulic jacket comprises upper and lower elastic sections 5 and 6' respectively,
" so l formed with the truncated hollow cone oenters 7 incorrespondence with the cone cen-. ters, D of the dies, and interposed between the sections 5 and 6 at the marginal edges thereof is a vulcanized rubber ring 8 which serves as a spacer for the sections 5 and 6,
the ring 8 being united to the inner faces of the upper and lower sections in any suitable manner. 7
The sections 5 and 6 and the ring 8 form a jacket having a chamber 9 and fastened in the lower section 6 is a pipe nipple 9 carrying a back flow check valve 10, and this nipple is adapted for connection with a water supply pipe leading from a water pump (not shown), so that water can be introduced into the chamber 9 when required. The jacket is ofa diameter corresponding to the internal diameter of the rim B so as to fit upon the bottom or base die A within the rim B thereon.
' In the operation'of thehydraulic jacket a predetermined quantity of water is admitted sufficiently small .to permit the easy fitting l of the crown of a hat upon the cone center 7 of the upper section 5, and the brim of the hat will overlie the jacket concentrically of the cone centers 7 of the sections 5 and 6 thereof. When the upper die C is lowered the same presses upon the brim of the hat so that the water within the chamber 10 is displaced uniformly thereof and a quantity of the water is forced upwardly into the space between the cone centers 7 of the sections 5 and 6 so that the pressure is equalized throughout the hat by the jacket, the latter being prevented from bursting at the edges thereof by abutting or being confined within the rim B of the lower or bottom die. It is of course understood that a suitable covering can be placed upon the top of the jacket so as to insulate the heat from the upper die C, as this latter die is kept hot while in use, while the lower die B remains cold in the operation of the hat stamping press. Heretofore, a strong elastic rubber bag held in place by a bolted iron ring upon one of the dies of the hand press has been employed and this bag holds a suflicient quantityof water. The hat is placed upon one of the dies and raised in contact with the bag, at which point it locks. The bag is attached to a suitable pump which serves to force additional water into the bag so as to equalize the pressure of the bag evenly over all portions of the hat, and by reason of this particular construction the pressis costly and also by reason of the complicated assemblage of the bag upon the die adds to the cost in the manufacture of the press as well as rendering the process of finishing the hat somewhat difficult.
From the foregoing description, taken in Copies of. this patent may be obtained for five cents connection with the accompanying drawings, construction and operation of the in vention will be readily apparent and, therefore, a more extended explanation has been omitted.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim: 7
1. In a hydraulic jacket of the class de scribed, a hollow body comprising upper and lower elastic sections having hollow truncated cone centers,and a reinforcing ring arranged between the sections marginally thereof and united to the same.
2. In a hydraulic jacket of the class described, a hollow body comprising upper and lower elastic sections having hollow truncated cone centers, a reinforcing ring arranged between the sections marginally thereof and united to the same, and means for admitting fluid into the hollow body for displacement therein to equalize the pressure of the body throughout the area thereof.
3. In a hydraulic jacket of the class described, a hollow body comprising upper and lower elastic sections having raised centers, a reinforcing band arranged between the sections marginally thereof and united to the same, and means for admitting fluid into the hollow body for displacement therein to equalize the pressure of the body throughout the area thereof.
