JOHN HENERY PEA'RMAN, 0F LISBON, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
CLEANING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 20, 1917.
Application led June 17, 1916. Serial No. 104,224.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. PEARMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lisbon, in the county of Grafton and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and. Improved Cleaning Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description.
This invention relates to a cleaning or, scouring device especially adapted for taking spots out of clothing and various fabrics.
The invention lhas for its general objects to provide a cleaning device of the fountain type which is of comparatively simple and inexpensive construction, reliable and efficient in use7 and so designed as to be adapted as a household article, whereby spots can be taken out of garments or other fabric without requiring them to be sent outl to a professional cleaner.
IVith such kobjects in view, and others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises various novel features of construction and arrangement ofparts which will be set forth with particularity in the following description and claims appended hereto.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates one embodiment of the invention and wherein similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the cleaner;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section thereof on the line 2 2, Fig. 3; and
Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the lin'e 3-3, Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing, A designates the holder or body section of the device, and B the rubber which is fitted in the holder. The holder A is of approximately elliptical form or the shape of the back of a hand brush since the device is intended to be grasped in the hand when being used. The body A is preferably made hollow so that in the chamber 1 may be contained a cleaning fiuid 2 that is filled into the chamber through an opening 3 normally closed by a plug or equivalent device 4. Projecting below the bottom 5 of the body A is a peripheral depending flange 6 to form a socket or recess into which is fitted the rubber B. The bottom 5 has an outlet port 7 normally closed by ay valve 8 on the lower end of a stem 9 that extends upwardly through an pushbutton is so located that it can be conveniently operated by the index finger of the hand which grips the device.
The rubber B comprises a back in the form of a plate 13 of any suitable construction, and this back has an opening 14 for accommodating the valve 8 and for permitting the cleaning fluid to feed to the rubber.
Under the plate 13 is a downwardly dished plate 15 having its under side curved both longitudinally and transversely, and the edges of this plate 15 are soldered or otherwise joined to the back 13 so that a shallow distributing chamber 16 is provided. AThe plate 15 has a plurality of distributing apertures 17 through which the cleaning fluid passes to the absorbent pad 18 which is held against the plate 15 by a felt or other fabric strip 19 which is considerably larger than the plate 15, so that its marginal portions can be lapped around the sides and ends of the plate 13 to which it is bound by a clamping band 20. This band fits within the flange 6 of the body section A. V'Ihe plate 15 by being fixed on its under surface gives the proper shape to the rubbing surface Vformed by the felt 19, whereby the most delicate fabric can be rubbed without danger of its being torn.
In use the pad and felt are thoroughly saturated by opening the valve S and allowing the cleaning fluid to pass to the shallow distributing chamber `16, and then the device is rubbed over the soiled portion of a garment or other article to clean the same, which can be effectively and expeditiously done even by a person of ordinary intelligence.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and method of operation will be readily understood by those, skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation, together with the article which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof. I desire to have it understood that the article shown l is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made when desired as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, li claim as neiv and desire te secure by Letters Patent:
l. A. cleaning device comprising a body section formed with a` chamber and having a peripheral depending lange, a discharge port in the bottom ot the chamber adjacent one end, a valve controlling said port and having means at the top oit the body for actuating the valve, in combination with a removable rubbing section 'formed of a. body shaped to enter Within the socket defined by the said ialge of the body section, a dis tributing ehamber extending along the bot-- toni of the said body and provided vvith perforations in its bottom., there being an open-- ing in the body through which fluid from the said port passes into the chamber, a pad disposed in contact with the under surface of the peri ated ljiotton'i of the chamber, a cloth extenoii'ig nndei` and covering the pad, and the edges of the eloth being disposed around the peripherv of the body, and a band binding the e0 o?" tbe cloth removably to the 'said body and 'forming means for frictionally engaging `the internal surface of the flange of the. body Section to removably hold the rubbing section on the latter.
'3. All scribed comprising a storage chamber for' distributing" Chambon eonnnunication bete-e cleaning;h device of the Claes destructure having a and a bottom oit the distributing chamber be convex on its under side and termed xvii, distributed apertures through which cleanW ing fluid feeds, and an absorbent rubi'r-ing pad covering the perforated bottoni nii the distributing chamber, Said valve being? lceated close to one end of the device, wherein' the cleaning' iiuid can be diecharged into one end o'l the distributing* chamber to moisten only one end of the pad by holdingn the device inclined with the valved portion loiverinost.
3. lin a device of the class described, the Combination of a holding' section in the torni of a body provided With a chamber and ha ing a depending marginal flangeto term a, recess or socket., a port in the bottom of the chamber, a valve normally closing the port,
a stein on the valve extending out of the top of the chamber and adapted to be aetu ated by a nger of the hand grasping the holdingy section, with a rubber seetiou eomprisingl a back havingr an opeiiing through which iiuid passes from the portn and a plate secured to the under side et the bark and forming therewith a shallow distributing eliainl'ier. said plate being; dished downwai-dl)T both longitudinally and transversely and having distributed apertures3 en absorbe1 ubbi g; pad covering? lie in side et the plate tzibrie pieve under i d haveV dees i up air-ouml
