BERT eooon, or JoHNsToN CITY, ILLI OIs, AssIGNoR or oNn- ALF T0 JOHN F. H.
DEARBOBN, or JoHNs'roN CIT-Y, ILLINOIS;
noon.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BnR'rGoooH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Johnston City, in the county of Williamson and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Doors; and I 7 do hereby declare the following to be a-full, clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. a
This invention relates to doors and more particularly to that class of doors used in connection with mines to retain the air pressure therein. V
The principal object of the invention is to provide doors whichare automatically operated upon the approach of a mine car and which 'will return to their closed position after the passage of the mine car through the door opening.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel means for moving the doors into their open position and returning them to their closed position. 7
Still another object of the'invention is to provide a pair of doors for closing a single opening which are pivoted so as to only occupy the space necessary and so that the space will not exceed the width of the tunnel.
A further object of the invention is to provide a door wherein the use of sliding doors is eliminated, thereby avoiding the necessity of enlarging the tunnel at the point where the door opening is formed.
With these and other objects in view, the
invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which:- I
Figure 1 is a plan view of a fragment of a mine car track showing my improved doors and the controlling means therefor in plan.
Fig. 2 is a side view in elevation partly broken away, of the j ointedra-il by which the doors are actuated upon the approach of car, toward the door opening. I
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary elevational view of a pair of mine doors andthe operating mechanism therefor, and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional View on the line 44 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings by char Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed October 20, 1915. serial No. 55,950.
acters of reference, the numeral 1 designates as an entirety the min'e'car track comprising the usual ties'2 and right and left hand mile 3 and 4 respectively. These rails are spiked or otherwise secured to the ties in the usual manner and are spaced from each other the gage of the track as in the ordinary way.
The tie 5 extends beyond the extreme ends 7 of the ties 2 as clearly illustratedvand the extensions thereon are formed with. the openings 6 for the reception of the bushing 7 in which the standards 8 are rotatably mounted. These standards 8 are provided with the cylindrical extensions 9 at their upper ends which are mounted in suitable bearings and surrounding the standards are the straps 10 which extend transversely of the doors llnear their upper and lower terminals. These doors are slightly wider than one-half of the width of the tunnel so that they will overlap as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3. Thelower end of each of the StQ'HCIfiTCISB project below the lower surface of the tie 5 and is arranged to receive the crank arms which will be more fully hereinafter described. j
The crank arms above referred to are best illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3 and the uppermost crank arm on the right hand side of the track is designated by the numeral 12 and projects at an angle substantially 45 degrees with relation to the direction in which the door Il -extends. The lower crank armdesignated by the numeral 13 i's secured to the lowermost extension of the standard on the left hand side of the track and extends at substantially right angles to the crank arm12 as clearly shown. It will thus be seen that the two arms 12 and 13 project in opposite directions and relatively 45 degrees with relationtothe direction in which the door 11 extends. V I
The uppermost crank arm 14 at the opposite side of the trackp 'Qleots atsubstantially 45 degrees with relationto the direc tion in which. the; door 11 extends and in substantially parallel relation with the 7 Copies of this patent may be obtained for 16 is pivotally connected to the crank arm 18 and the crank arm 15 and is provided intermediate its ends with the ear 17 to which the terminal of the retractile coil spring 18 is secured. The opposite terminal of this coil is secured as at 19 to a suitable clip 20 which surrounds the rail 3 and it will thus be seen that pull will be exerted on the bar 16. to cause the doors to be normally held in their closed position.
Secured between two ties near the tie 5 and at equal distances from each side thereof are the bearing plates 21 which are formed with suitable openings for the reception of the pivot pin 22 by means of which the levers 28 are pivotally mounted on the plates. The longer ends of these levers project beyond the lateral edges of the track 1. and have pivotally connected thereto suitable links 24; the opposite ends of which are pivotally connected to the levers 12 and 14. The inner ends of these levers 23 are slidable on the guide plate 25 and provided with suitable slots 26 which are arranged to receive the connecting pins of the sectional rails which will be more fully hereinafter described.
The sectional rails hereinbefore referred to are best illustrated in Fig. 2 and each of said rails comprises two separate sections 27 and 28 which are respectively the short and long sections. These sections are hinged together at their adjacent ends as at 29 and the opposite end of the section 27 is pivoted as at 30 to the screw 31 which screw extends through a suitable block 32 and is provided with the adjusting nut 33. The end of the rail sec tion 28 opposite the hinge 29 is formed with the pin 3st which extends into the slots 26 and thereby forms a connection between the lever 23 and the sectional rail.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that in use the car upon approaching the jointed rails 6, 27 and 28 will force said sections downwardly, thereby moving the pin 3d longitudinally of the track and causing the lever 23 to rock, thereby opening the doors through the medium of the connecting bar 24: and crank arms 12 and 14:. After the car has passed through the door, it will be apparent that the spring 18 will exert pull on the connecting bar 16 so as to cause-the doors to swing in their closed position and thereby avoid the escape of air from the mine shaft. Upon the approach of the car from the opposite direction it will be apparent that the same operation will take place thereby causing the doors to open and close automatically and avoiding many of the accidents frequently occurring to mine car doors and the like. It will also be evident that due to the fact that the adjacent ends of the rails are positioned so that the distance between them is less thanthe length of a car the doors will remain open during the passage of the car therethrough.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to'be understood that such changesmay be made in the combination and arrangement of parts as will fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is 1. The combination with a pair of mine doors mounted on vertical pivots, arms extending outwardly from the pivots, a link connecting the arms whereby the doors are moved simultaneously, arms extending at right angles from the first mentioned arms, links pivoted to the free ends of the last mentioned arms, levers pivoted beside the track of a mine railroad, the outer ends of said levers being pivotally, connected to the last mentioned links, guides having the inner ends of said levers slidable thereover, the inner ends of said levers having slots formed therein and pairs of rail sections pivoted together at one end and having their opposite ends extended into the slots in the lever and a stationary pivot for the opposite ends of said rail sections.
2. In a mine door opening mechanism, a pair of levers pivoted adjacent the track of a mine railway, the outer ends of'said levers being connected to the doors, a pair of jointed rail sections connected to the inner end of each lever, said sections being hinged at their ends and adapted to bow upwardly, a pivotal connection connecting the forward end of said rail sections to the lever, an adjust able pivot connecting the rear ends of the lovers to the track and a compression spring for forcing the levers upwardly to move the same off from a dead center when the doors are to be returned to closed position.
In testimony-whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
