IMPROVEMENT IN DOORS FOR MINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,312, dated June 25, 1872.

The object of this invention is to provide means whereby the doors in the passages of mines can be automatically opened and closed by the cars approaching and leaving the same, thereby saving time and labor in the operation of the cars. The invention consists in connecting the door by ropes or chains with links that slide on rails fitted into the sides of the mine passages. A car approaching a door comes in contact with one of these links and pushes it along, thereby actuating the rope so that the door is opened. After having passed the door the car strikes the other link and.
moves it ahead, so as to shut the door behind it. The tracks for the links are bent at the ends toward the sides of the passage, to a1- low' the links to -be swung out of contact of the car when they have been moved the requisite distance.

It is moved by ropes or chains b and d, respectively connected with two sliding links or plates, D and E, which slide, on rails F and G, that are firmly secured to the sides or bottom of the passage on both sides of the door. The two links D E are also directly connected with each other by a rope or chain, e, which passes over a pulley, f, that is outside of the rail F, as shown. The two links are vthus connected with each other, so that their movements will always be the same with respect to the doorthat is to say, when one link is moved toward the door the other will also move toward the door, and both will move simultaneously away from the door whenever one does. IVhenever the car H, which moves in thepassage C, strikes the link D, moving it toward the door, the rope e pulls the other link E, and causes the latter, by the rope d, to swing the door open in manner indicated in Fig. 2. After having passed the door the car strikes the link E, moving it away from the door, and producing a similar motion of the link D, whereby the rope b will be pulled to swing the door shut. The same action on the door will take place when the car moves in the opposite direction. The rails F Gr are bent at the ends, so that the car may swing the links aside and pass them easily, after having pushed them to the end of the rail. The rails may both be on the same side of the passage C, or on opposite sides, if desired, near the bottom or near the top. The pulleys over which the several ropes are passed are properly secured in the sides ofthe passage by means of projecting prongs or otherwise.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the door B with the slides D E, ropes b d e, and rails F Gr, all arranged to constitute an automatic mechanism for opening and shutting the door by means of the car, as set forth.
