To all whom it may concern Be it known that I CLARENCE D. CONNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tupelo, in the county of Lee and State of Mississippi, have invented new and useful Improvements 7 in Attachments for Paper Cutters or Knives, of which the following is a specification. w
This invention relates to an attachment for paper cutters or kniveszby .IXIGZLIIS of which manual clawing of paper is obviated.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a construction by means of which the end of thepaper may be moved to a position to be readily grasped by the operator and thus destroy the cohesive action between the edge portion of the paper and the body portion of the roll.
All object of the invention is the novel manner of associatingthe hand Wheel with the rest of the elements so thatthis single element will be capable of rotating through intermediate elements, the roll and moving another elementintopositionto separate the edge portionof the paper from the roll so that the same can be. readily grasped'by the operator.
A very important feature of this arrangement is that one hand of the operator can perform the dual function of rotating the roll and separating the edge portion while the remaininghand Will be free to move the sheet ofpaper thus liberated over the cutting knife.
With these and other objects in View the invention will be better understoodfrom the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a paper rack, showing my invention applied thereto.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a frame or paper cabinet of a Well known construction comprising a base 2, uprights 8 and a top plate 4. J ournaled in the uprights is a rectangular shaft 5 upon which is adjustably mounted serrated cone bearings 6 held in place by means of a set Of the uprights.
screw These cone bearings have a bindingraction with the usual-bore 8 formed at' thecenter of the roll of paper 9.
The paper cutting knife 10 is supported by means of the brackets 11 and yieldably forced toward the roll by means of coil springs 12 encircling and acting uponan intermediate portion of each bracket.
In the drawings, I have shown my inven- 7 tion in duplicate formarranged at both ends of the shaft, but I willlimit the following description to only-those elements-arranged at one end of the shaft, as a description of one will suffice for a description of the other.
Rotatably mounted upon one end of the knife 10 is a crank shaft 13, the end portions 14 and 15 of whichbeing angularly disposed fora purpose hereinafter described. Also secured to the blade or knife is a release spring 16 yieldably engaging the crank portion 17 of the shaft so as to yieldably hold the shaft ineither of its two positions. The end portion 15 of the shaft has secured thereto a shoe 16' shown in this particular instance as made of yieldable material such as rubber, but I wish ittobe understood that the same can be made of any suitable material and of any suitable shape depending upon whetherthe shoe is to force its way between the edge of the paper and the roll or to create an adhesive action between the shoe and the edge portion of thepaper greater than the cohesive 'action between the edge portion and the roll. The end portion l has secured thereto oneend of a flexible element 18 that passes through a number of guide elements 19 and secured to one end of a centrally pivotedlever 20, one arm 21 of which abuts an expansion spring 22 supported by one side Slidably mounted on the protruding'end 23 of the shaft and held against rotary motion around the shaft due to the configuration of the latter is a hand wheel 24. This handlwheel 2 l is so disposed that ,upon slidingit upon the shaft the arin 21 of the leverwill be engaged for moving the arm in opposition to the spring with the result that the, other end of 1.the lever will be moved in a direction to exert a pull upon the element 18 which causes the crank shaft to be rotated in a direction to throw the Shoe 16 into engagement with the roll 9'.
The cooperation between the hand wheel and the shaft allows the hand wheel to turn the roll so that the roll may be rotated subsequently to the positioning of the shoe 16. Upon the wheel 24 beingrelieved of pressure the spring 22 returns the parts to normal position.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that by having the elements arranged as shown one hand of the operator is capable of manipulating the hand wheel 2% so as to initially throw the shoe 16 into proper relation with the roll and to subsequently give rotary movement to the roll so that the shoe may have the proper action upon the edge portion of the paper. A very important feature of my invention is the fact that the shoe moves in a plane below the edge of the knife so that the cutting action between the knife and paper is not interfered with.
It is to be understood that while all of the several features of my improved apparatus have special cooperation with one another and together constitute a particularly effective mechanism for the purpose in view, certainof these features may be applied in other relations such as dispensing with the hand wheel 24 and lever 20 and so disposing the spring 22 as to exert tension upon the element 18 for continuously holding the shoe in engagement with the roll. I therefore desire to cover the combination comprised in the several parts of my improved apparatus whether employed in the general organization shown or elsewhere.
What I claim is:
w 1. An attachment for a paper cutting knife, a shoe, a crank shaft rotatably mounted upon the knife and supporting the shoe for movements toward and away from the paper, resilient means cooperating with the crank portion of the shaft for resiliently holding said shoe in either of its two positions, and means for giving movements to said shaft.
An attachment for a knife of the class described comprising a crank shaft rotatably mounted on the knife, a shoe connected to one end of said shaft for movements under the knife edge toward and away from the paper, means for giving movements to said shaft, and resilient means cooperating with the crank portion of the shaft for holding said shoe in either of its two positions.
In combination a frame, a shaft jour naled therein and supporting a roll of paper,
a knife, a shaft mounted on the knife and having one end disposed to press against the roll directly below the knife, and means for normally holding said end out of engagement with the roll.
4. In combination a frame, a shaft journaled therein and supporting a roll of paper, a knife, a shaft mounted on the knife and having one end disposed to press against the roll directly below the knife, and means having a portion arranged eXteriorly of the frame whereby said end may be manually moved out of engagement with the roll.
5. In combination a frame, a shaft journaled therein and supporting a roll of paper, a knife, a shaft mounted on the knife and having one end disposed to press against the roll directly below the knife, a flexible element having one end connected to said shaft, a spring pressed lever connected to the other end of said element, and means for simultaneously giving movement to said lever and the roll. 6. In combination a frame, a shaft journaled therein and supporting a roll of paper, a knife, a shaft mounted on the knife and having one end disposed to press against the roll directly below the knife, a flexible element having one end connected to said shaft, a spring pressed lever connected to the other end of said element, and means for simultaneously giving movement to said lever and the roll, said means including a shaft rotatably supporting the roll of paper, and a hand wheel for giving movements to the shaft and said lever.
7. In combination a frame, a shaft journaled therein and supporting a roll of paper, a knife, a shaft mounted on the knife and having one end disposed to press against the roll directly below the knife, a flexible element having one end connected to said shaft, a spring pressed lever connected to the other end of said element, a resilient shoe attached to said end of the shaft, a flexible element having one extremity connected to the remaining end of said shaft, a spring pressed pivoted lever connected to the other extremity of said element, a shaft rotatably supporting the roll of paper and a hand wheel slidably mounted on the shaft and adapted to give movements to said shaft and movements to said lever.
