SAFETY-RAZOR.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL VVATsoN CHARLES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Palo Alto, in thecounty of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented a new and useful Safety-Razor, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in safetyrazors, in which the blade and guard are pivoted together in one end ofthe handle, and the opposite ends are held together or released at will by means of a latch at the end of the guard.

The razor blade 2 and guard 3 are pivoted together and to a-s'uitable handle 1 by means of any suitable form ofrivet 7, and maybe folded into the handle when not in use.

I prefer to make this rivet of essentially the form shown in section in Fig. 3, so that by providing a suitable shoulder as shown, the guard 3 may be free to turn about part 7, but is held from coming ofl when thumb screw 8 is removed. By providing a removable thumb screw 8, which preferably is madeto screw into rivet 7 as shown, so that rivet 7 is kept comparatively short in length,

of the blade 2. The rivet 7 should be riveted tightly enougln'or held by a suitably squared part, to prevent its turning with screw 8.

The leaf 10 of the handle 1 might prefer- V ably be made free to rotate about rivet 9 to facilitate the removal of the blade 2, though it is evident that this is not essential, provided leaf 10 is sufficiently flexible.

Blade 2 is preferably sharpened on both edges as shown more clearly in Fig. 4, and

the guard 3 made to protect both edges, the

edges of guard 3 being serrated as shown.

To clamp the guard 3 in position over the blade 2, a suitable latch is provided, which clamps the plane faces of the guard and razor blade together, and also prevents relative motion about the pivot 7. The latch used for illustration consists of the latch proper, 6, a coiled spring 5 for keeping the latch in position, and the part 4, riveted to guard 3, and serving as a guide for latch 6, and as a holder and stop for spring 5. Latch 6 is'so bent as'to engage the outer side of guard 3 and the outer side of blade 2, as shownin Fig. 3. Latch 6 also engages in a notch 11 in the end of blade 2.

V For swinging blade 2' into and out of alinement with guard 3, and also to aid in holding the razor inshaving, the part forming the blade 2 is extended beyond the rivet 7 as shown.

To release the latch 6, the projecting end is pressed out of engagement with the notch 11 in blade 2, when the blade 2 and guard 3 may be swung out of alinement for cleaning. By properly shaping the end of blade 2 on either side of the notch 11 it acts as a cam in bringing blade 2 and guard 3 into alinement, moving catch 6 out of the way 'until opposite notch 11, when spring 5 forces it into the notch 11 locking guard and blade together ready for shaving. Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is-- j 1.
