MATCH-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 25, 1916. Serial No. 111,293.
To all whom it may concern: Y
Be it known that I, ENOCH W. WORDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Flint, in the county of Genesee and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Match-Boxes, of which the.following is a specification.
This invention is an improved match box adapted to deliver matches singly as wanted, the object of the invention being to provide an improved match box of this kind which is simple in construction, which may be readily operated and which is not likely to get out of order.
The invention consists in the features of construction, combination, and arrangement of devices, hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings! Figure 1 is partly an elevation and partly a sectional view of a match box constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention and showing the ejector in one position in full lines and in another position in dotted lines.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same taken on the plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. e I
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same on a plane indicated by the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a detailed perspective view of the match ejector.
The body 1 of oblong rectangular of my improved match box is form, is preferably made of sheet metal and comprises a side 2,
end walls 3, 4, a bottom wall 5 and a top wall 6. The wall 6 has an opening 7 near the side wall 3 and said side wall is formed with an inturned flange 8 which forms the guide for a match ejector 9 which in practice is preferably a rod of metal having an inwardly extending follower 10 and provided at its outer end with a handle 11 which is here shown in the form of a hook.
The bottom 5 has an inturned flange 12 and is also provided with a spacer 13. Said flange terminates short of the wall 3 to form a notch 14 in the upper side of the bottom for the reception of the follower 10 when the ejector is in retracted, initial position and to enable the follower to engage under a match, the flange 12 of the follower 10, owing to the spacer 13, serving to hold the lower ends of the matches above the level of the follower as shown.
The top 6 has an inturned flange 15 and the side 4 has an inwardly extending flange 17. A spring 18 which is initially substantially V-shaped has an arm 19 which bears against the end 4 and between the wall 2 and the flange 17 and also has an arm 20 which bears against the match which is farthest from the wall 3 so that said spring by its tension presses the matches toward the wall 3. v
To obtain a match, the ejector is drawn outwardly thus causing the match engaged by the ejector to be partially projected through the opening 7. The guide flange 8 limits the ejecting movement of the ejector. The ejector is then returned to initial position and when the partially projected match is withdrawn from the box, the spring moves another match into engaged position, over the follower of the ejector as will be understood. V
The body of the box is provided with a slidable cover 21 which is formed with side and bottom flanges 22, 23, the said side flanges engaging over the ends 3, 4, of the box and said bottom flange when the cover is closed bearing against the bottom 5.
To prevent the matches from crossing and to compensate for the enlarged heads of the matches, the side of the box is formed with acentrally arranged transverse bead 24 which projects from the inner surface thereof. 4
Having described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. A match box comprising a body having.
a side, end walls, a top wall and a bottom wall, one of said end walls being provided with an inturned flange spaced therefrom and coacting therewith to form a guide, sai
flange terminating short of the bottom, said top wall having an opening at said guide, an ejector movable in the guide and held be tween said end wall and said inturned flange and provided at the lower end with a follower, and said bottom having a spacer serving'to hold the lower ends of matches in the body above the level of the follower, and a cover on the open side of the body, slidable thereon and provided with inturned flanges engaging the end walls and said side of the body.
Patented Feb. 2c, 1917.
2. A match box comprising a side, end Walls, a bottom Wall and a top Wall, said top Wall having an inturned flange spaced from said side so that the ends of matches may be arranged between said side and said inturnedflange, said side having a trans-' verse bead projecting-from the inner surface thereof to prevent the matches from crossing and to compensate for the enlarged heads thereof, and an ejector in one side of 10 the box.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
