Be it known that I, VVILLIAM H. SLOAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Huston-Salem, in the county of Forsyth and State of North Carolina, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Chimney-Holding Attachments for Lamps, of which thefollowing is a specification.
My invention relates generally to lamps, and more particularly to oil lamps, the object thereof being to provide means whereby lamp chimneys may be readily, quickly, and positively clamped in position in connection with'the lamp burner, and of-such nature as that they may be'qiiickly and easily released to permit of removal of the chimney for purposes of cleaning, repair, and substitution, and when the lamp is lighted. Further objects, together with the advantages of my invention, will appear in the course of the following description thereof, reference being made to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specificar' tion, and wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the practical application and use of the invention;

Referring now to these figures, my invention is utilized in connection with an oil lamp of the general type shown in Fig. 1, wherein t'heburner is utilized in connection with an oil burning receptacle 15, and includes a horizontally disposed body plate 16, the inner portion of which perforated as usual and provided with a central wick holding member 18, the wick adjusting means being generally seen at 19, and the outer portion '20 of which is in the nature of an annular substantially flat rim having radial slots 21 in its outer peripheral edge and at spaced points therearoun'd, forming guides for the vertically projectingchimney-clasping arms 22 which work 11113116 slots 21 for engagement with and disengagement from the lamp chimney 23, under the control of operating means to be now described.
The arms 22 are preferably formed of "flat metal so as to 'cast minimum-shadow,
and have their upper ends 23twisted and bent to form engaging heads, the lower eX- tremities of the arms 22, below the body plate 16, being pivotally connected to the lower ends of brackets 2st secured'to and depending from the body plate 16 of the burner, as best seen in Figs. 1 and 4, so that the upper portions of the arms 22 including their clasping heads, are movable radially,.
inwardly toward, and outwardly away from, the burner cap 25.
Monnt-e'din flatwise sliding relation upon the burner rim v20 of the body plate 16, is an annular adjusting ring 26, of somewhat greater diameter than the diameter of the saidrim 20, and provided around its inner peripheral edge with a plurality of integral bent lugs 27 which slidably engage the lower surface of the rim 20 so as to maintain the adjusting ring .26 thereon, against accidental displacement. The ring 26, as shown particularly in Fig. 3, is further "provided. at
spaced points therearound, with curved slots 28, each disposed eccentrically with respect to the axis of theplate, and eachreceiving 'one of the vertically projecting clasping arms 22 therethrough, as clearly seen in Figs. 1 and 2, the ring 26 having a depend 'ing-integra-l finger-piece'29 bent angularly the body plate 16, so as to normally maintain the finger-pieces 29 and 31 in spaced apart relation so as to hold the chimneyclasping arms 22 at the inner ends of the curved slots 28.
Then the operator, however, grasps the two finger-pieces 29 and 31 and moves the former toward and against the latter,
against the tension of spring 34, the adjusting ring 26'is partly rotated upon the rim 20 of the body plate, so that the outer side walls of the slots 28, acting as cams against the outer edges of the clasping arms 22, will shift the latter in their'guide slots 21 of the rim 20, forcing the latter outwardly away from the burner cap .25, and consequently out of clasping engagement with the chimney 23, to permit ready removal of the latter, for purposes of cleaning, repair, or substitution, and when the burner is to be lighted, the reverse of this movement being true when the linger-pieces 29 and 31 are released by the operator, allowing the latter to move apart under tension of the spring 3.4L.
To permit of more efiective engagement of the clasping arms 22, the chimney 23 as shown in Fig. 1, is provided with an annular groove or indented portion 35 above its lower edge, into which the upper head 23 of the clasping arms extend in the engaged position, although this particular construction of the chimney is susceptible of change.
It is obvious from the foregoing that my invention provides for ell'ective clasping engagement of a lamp chimney, in such manner as to hold the same firmly and uniformly in position, obviating danger of breakage in use, and yet in such manner as to permit of ready removal of the chimney when desired.
It is further obvious that I provide simple and comparatively inexpensive means whereby the movement of the vertically extending arms utilized for the purpose of clasping the chimney, may be simultaneously controlled in a convenient, quick, and ready manner.
I claim 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a lamp burner having a fiat annular rim provided with radial slots in its outer eri )heral ortion at s aced points therearound, o1 brackets depending from the under surface of the said rim, chimney clasping arms pivoted at their lower ends to the said brackets and upstanding through the said radial slots, an adj usting ring rotatable upon the rim of the burner, having curved eccentric slots at spaced points therearound, through which the clasping arms extend, said adjusting ring having a depending finger piece, a [inger piece secured to and depending from the burner rim and opposing the finger-piece of the adjusting ring, and a U-shaped spring projecting inwardly below the rim oi the burner and engaging the said finger-pieces to normally prevent rotary movement of the adjusting ring.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a lamp burner having a fiat annular rim provided with radial slots inits outer peripheral portion at spaced points therearound, of brackets depending from the under surface of the said rim, chimney clasping arms pivoted at their lower ends to the said brackets and upstanding through the said radial slots, an adjusting ring rotatable upon the rim of the burner, having curved eccentric slots at spaced points therearound through which the clasping arms extend, said adjusting ring having a depending finger-piece, a finger piece secured to and depending from the burner rim and opposing the finger-piece of the adjusting ring, a U-shaped spring projecting inwardly below the rim of the burner and engaging the said finger-pieces to normally prevent rotary movement of the adjusting ring, said adjusting ring having its inner peripheral edge provided with depending bent lugs extending along the lower surface of the burner rim to prevent vertical displacement of the said adjusting ring.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a lamp burner having a projecting rim provided with radial guide slots, of chimney-clasping arms projecting vertically through the said guide slots and pivoted at their lower ends to the burner beneath the rim, an annularly shiftable adjusting ring disposed and movable on the burner rim and provided with curved ec centric slots through which the said clasping arms also extend, said adjusting ring and said burner rim having opposing fingerpieces by means of which the former may be shifted with respect to the latter, and a spring engaging the said finger-pieces to normally hold the adjusting ring against shifting movement. 7
4. In a device of the character described, the combination with a lamp burner having a projecting rim provided with radial guide slots, of chimney clasping arms projecting vertically through the said guide slots and pivoted at their lower ends to the burner beneath the rim, an annularly shiftable adjusting ring disposed and movable on the burner rim and provided with curved eccentric slots through which the said clasping arms also extend, said adjusting ring and said burner rim having opposing fingerpieces by means of which the former may be shifted with respect to the latter, and a spring engaging the finger-pieces to normally hold the adjusting ring against shifting movement, said adjusting ring having means engaging the burner rim to hold the same thereon, against vertical displacement.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination with a lamp burner having a projecting rim provided with radial guide slots, of chimney engaging arms extending vertically through the guide slots and pivoted at their lower ends to the burner, and means for simultaneously shifting the upper portions of the clasping arms radially toward and away from the center of the burner, said means including an annularly shitftable ring disposed and movable on the burnerrim and provided with curved eccentric slots through which. the clasping arms also extend.

In a device of the character described, the combination with a lamp burner having a. projecting rim provided with radial guide slots, of chimney engaging arms extending Vertically through the guide slots and pivoted at their lower ends to the burner, and means for simultaneously shifting the upper portions of the 'clasping arms radially toward and away from the center of the burner, said means including an annularly shiftable ring disposed and movable on the burner rim and provided with curved eccentric slots through which the clasping arms also extend, and a spring engaging portions of the said adjusting ring and the burner rim, to normally hold the former in inactive position.

means for simultaneously shifting the upper portions of the clasping arms radially also extend, and a spring engaging portions of the saidadjusting ring and the burner rim to normally hold the former in inactive position, said clasping arms including upright strips presented edgewise for the major portion of their length toward the center of the burner, and having their upper ends twisted and bent to form chimney-engaging heads presented flatwise toward the center of the burner.
