To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN H. SHAw, a citizen of the United States, residing in New Haven, county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to locks, and more particularly to master keyed cylinder locks.
One of the primary objects of the invention is the provision of a master keyed cylinder lock in which the so-called regular and emergency rollbacks respectively are spaced from each other in parallel planes, and so mounted that they can readily be brought into proper relation to the tumblers, or other cooperating parts of the mortise lock.
Other objects of the invention are to m vide a cylinder lock in which the rollbacks are located intermediate of the ends of the cylinder; to furnish a cylinder lock of such construction that it is adapted to pass completely through the case of a mortise lock, and to be secured in registering openings of the cap and bottom plate of the case; and to improve the general construction and operation of devices of the class to which my invention relates.
To these and other ends, the invention consists in the novel features and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, my improved cylinder lock is shown as comprising a main part 10, and an extension 11. These parts 10 and 11 are permanently secured together, as hereinafter described, to form a unitary cylinder lock structure, which is adapted to be fitted in registering openings in opposite walls of the case of the mortise look. In the embodiment shown in the drawings, the case 12 of the mortise lock has a cover plate or cap 13, provided with an opening 14, which receives the extension 11. The back or bottom of the case is provided with an interiorly threaded opening 15 into which the main part 10 of the cylinder lock is screwed by means of the threads 16. The opening 14 in the case may be interior-1y threaded, as well as the opening 15, to provide for the reversal of the cylinder lock, if desired, but

In the drawings, I have only illustrated two keys, to wit, a change key 22, and a master key, or so-called emergency key 23; and in the particular form shown, the change key 22 is adapted to actuate the regular rollback 20 only, whereas the emergency key 23 is adapted to actuate both rollbacks. The main part 10 of the cylinder lock is provided with a key plug 24, which is of greater length. than usual, and extends into the extension 11. Surrounding the key plug 24 in the main part of the lock is an eccentric sleeve 25. Spring-pressed tumblers 26 cooperate with the key plug, sleeve and case in the usual manner, so that the change key 22 will rotate the key plug alone, whereas the emergency key 23 will rotate the key plug and sleeve together. The regular roll back 20 is, of course, suitably fixed to the key plug 24.
In the form shown, it is provided with an opening 27, through which the key plug is extended, and lugs 28 extending into the opening 27 engage grooves 29 in the key plug, as show in Fig. 6, so that the rollback 20 will be rotated by the rotation of the key plug. The sleeve 25 and the case 30 are shorter than the key plug, and the rollback 20 is located at the rear end of the sleeve and case, and between them and the extension 11. The extension 11 is provided with a sleeve 31, corresponding generally to the sleeve 25, and located in line therewith. This sleeve 31 surrounds the rear end of the key plug and is adapted to be locked to the main or case portion 32 of the extension 11 by means of a single pin tumbler 33 made up of suitable sections. By referring to Figs. 1 and 5,.it will be noted that in the normal position of the parts, the pin tumbler 33 will lock the sleeve 31 to the case 32 of the extension, but will permit the key plug 24 to rotate freely in the extension. The main part of the extension is, of course, locked against rotary movement by'means of the dog 17 as previously explained. The emergency rollback 21 is fixed to the sleeve 31 in the extension by any suitable means,
such as the screws 34, shown in Fig. 7. This rollback is located at the front of the extension 11, and between the latter and the main part of the cylinder look. A washer 35 interposed between the rollbacks 20 and 21, and embracing the key plug, spaces the rollbacks at the required distance, and the several parts are held together by a disk or cap 36 applied to the rear end of the key plug by the screws 37 (Fig. 2), and overlying the rear face of the sleeve 31.
The operation of the improved lock will be obvious for the most part from the foregoing description. As previously stated, the pin tumbler 38 is so arranged that the key plug is normally free to rotate in the extension. Thus, when the change key 22 is inserted into the lock, it racks all of the tumblers in the main part of the lock, and enables the key plug to be rotated individually, carrying with it the rollback 20, which then operates the corresponding part of the mortise lock or latch. When an emergency key 23 is inserted into the lock, it racks the tumblers in the main part of the lock in a different manner, so that the key plug and sleeve rotate together as a unit. Furthermore, the emergency key 23 is longer than the change key 22, or, at any rate, it is provided with a suitable bitting 38, adapted to engage the tumbler 33 in such a manner as to lock the sleeve 31 to the key plug, but, at the same time, to release the sleeve 31 from the case 32 of the extension. Thus, the emergency key 23 not only rotates the sleeve 25, with the key plug 24, but also the sleeve 31, and as the latter sleeve is fixed to the emergency rollback 21, the latter rollback will be rotated simultaneously with the zlar rollback 20, and will operate the eeriesponding part of the lock or latch mechanism which is not operated by the change key.
It will be seen that by my invention, the emergency rollback or cam arm forms a permanent part of the cylinder lock; yet, it is always spaced from the regular rollback to a certain definite extent, and does not have to be shifted relatively to the regular rollback by the insertion of a certain key.
Various modifications in the details of the device may obviously be adopted within the scope of the claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a cylinder lock, the combination of a casing, a key plug rotatable therein, a short sleeve surrounding the key plug, a rollback fixed to the key plug, a second rollback fixed to said sleeve, a plurality of pin tumblers adapted to lock said key plug to the casing, a single pin tumbler adapted to lock said sleeve to the casing, a key to operate all of said tumblers so as to rotate both roll backs, and a key operative on the tumblers which lock the key plug to the casing, but inoperative on the sleeve controlling tumbler, whereby the key plug rollback is rotated individually by said second key; substantially as described. 2. A cylinder lock having a plurality of rollbacks intermediate of the ends of said lock; one of said rollbacks rotatable independently of the other, substantially as described.
3. In a cylinder lock, the combination of a casing, a key plug rotatable therein, a short sleeve surrounding the key plug at the rear end of the cylinder lock, a rollback fixed to the key plug, a rollback fixed to the sleeve, a group of pin tumblers to lock the key plug to the casing, a single pin tumbler to lock the sleeve to the casing, a short key operative on the tumblers of said group but inoperative on said single pin tumbler, to release the key plug and rotate the rollback individually, and a longer key operative on all of said tumblers to release both the key plug and sleeve from the casing and rotate both rollbacks simultaneously; substantially as described.
4:- In a cylinder lock, the combination of a casing, a key plug rotatable therein, a short sleeve surrounding the key plug at the rear end of the look, a single pin tumbler at the rear end of said lock cooperating with the key plug, sleeve and casing and normally in a position to release the key plug but to lock the sleeve to the casing, a second pin tumbler normally locking the key plug to the casing, a rollback fixed to the sleeve, a rollback fixed to the key plug, a key to operate said second pin tumbler individually and thereby rotate the key plug rollback individually, and a second key bitted to actuate both of said pin tumblers to release both the key plug and sleeve from the casing, so that both of said rollbacks may be actuated simultaneously; substantially as described.
5. The combination of a case of the mortise type, a pin tumbler cylinder lock extending completely through said case, and a plurality of rollbacks carried by said cylinder look within the case and intermediate of the ends of said cylinder lock; said rollbacks disposed at different points in the length of said cylinder lock, substantially as described.
6. In a cylinder lock, the combination of a casing, a key plug rotatable therein, a sleeve rotatable about the key plug, a rollback fixed to the sleeve, a rollback fixed to the key plug, a pin tumbler cooperating with the key plug, sleeve and casing and normally locking the sleeve to the casing, but occupying a position in which the key plug is freely rotatable in the sleeve, a second pin tumbler normally locking the key plug to the casing, a key to actuate both of said pin tumblers to release the sleeve and key plug from said casing, and thereby rotate both of said rollbacks, and a second key operative on the second pin tumbler but inoperative on' said first pin .tumbler, whereby said second key will actuate the key plug rollback individually; substantially as described.

8. In a cylinder lock, the combination of a main part, .an extension, a key plug in the extension, a sleeve in the extension, surrounding the key plug, a pin tumbler for locking the key plug to said sleeve and said sleeve to the main part of the extension, and rollbacks carried by the key plug and sleeve respectively; substantially as described.
9. In a cylinder lock, the combination of a main part, an extension, a key plug common to the main part and the extension, a sleeve surrounding the key plug in the extension, a pin tumbler cooperating with the key plug, sleeve and the main part of the extension, and a pin tumbler cooperating with said key plug in the main part of the lock; substantially as described.
10. In a cylinder'lock, the combination of a main part, an extension, a key plug common to the main part and to the extension, separate sleeves surrounding the key plug in the main part and extension respectively, and tumblers cooperating with said sleeves and said key plug; substantially as described.
11. In a cylinder lock, thecombination of a main part, an extension, a key plug common to said main part and said extension, a sleeve surrounding said key plug in said extension, a pin tumbler cooperating with said key plug and sleeve, a rollback carried by said key plug, and a rollback carried by said sleeve; substantially as described.

A cylinder lock having a key plug, two sleeves surrounding the key plug, pin tumblers cooperating with the key plug and said sleeves, a rollback carried by one of said sleeves and a rollback carried by the key plug, both of said rollbacks disposed intermediate of the ends of said cylinder lock; substantially as described.
17. A cylinder lock having a key plug, a sleeve surrounding said key plug, pin tumblers cooperating with the key plug and sleeve, and a rollback operative by said sleeve and disposed intermediate of the ends of said cylinder lock; substantially as described.
18. Ina cylinder lock, the combination of a casing, a key plug rotatable therein, a rollback fixed to said key plug, a short sleeve surrounding the key plug at the rear end of said cylinder look, a rollback fixed to said sleeve in parallelism with said first rollback,
a spacing Washer interposed between said ,rollbacks, -.a pin tumbler cooperating with the key ,plug, sleeve and casing, and nor-V mally locking the sleeve to the casing, but in a vposition1to permit rotation of the key plug in the sleeve, a second pin tumbler nor mally' locking the key plug .to the (casing, said second pin tumbler independent iof'sa-id sleeve, a key for actuating the second pin tumbler but inoperative von the gfirst, :and a second key to actuate both tumblers so as 3130 free both the key plug and sleeve from the casing and thereby permit the rotation of both of said rollbacks; substantially as described.

In a cylinder lock, the combination of a casing, a key plug rotatable therein, a sleeve surrounding said key plug gbutof less length than said key plug, a rollback fixed 130517118 key plug, a rollback :fixed-to the sleeve, a pin tumbler engaging the key plug, sleeve and casing, and normally locking the sleeve to the casing :but in a position :to permit free rotation of :the key plug in the sleeve, a second pin tumbler independent of said sleeve and spaced thereirom, normally looking the key plug to the casing, a key bitted to actuate the second pin tumbler only, and a second key bitted to actuate both of said pin tumblers; substantially as described In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand on the 25th day of November, 1914.
