GEORGL. Bitner-I, or wrLToN, 'KE'nTUcK'YQlI i LUBRIoATING-A'xnn. v l. y y' l 'v Specication of Letterszlatent..
To all 107mm t may concern: v i Be it knownthat I, GEORGE L. BIRCH, a citizen of [the United States, Yresiding'at VVilton, in the county of Knox and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvem entsI in! Lubricating-Axles, of which the followingis a specification. This invention relates to trolley harps, and more particularly :to anovel and eflicient lubricating means therefor. i l f An. object of this invention is toA associate with the harp suitable lubricating means Vso as 4to facilitate the rotation of .the trolley wheel, means being likewise provided tol de-v crease tie wear on the harp and at'the same time providing. a deviceJ comprising but comparatively few parts which may be readily Aassociated for' performing the, desired function. a a n L 1:2 Other objects as well-asthe nature, characteristic features and scope of my invention will be more readily understood from the following description takenin connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim forming a part of this specification.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a harp constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2`2 of Fig. l; and
Fig/3 is a perspective view ofthe improved wear plate used in the present invention.
lIn the drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the present invention, my improved trolley harp is preferably of a substantially U-shaped configuration as indicated at 5 and shown to advantage in Fig. 2, the one end of the arm 6 of the body portion being enlarged as at 7 and provided with a transverse opening therethrough which communicates with a cut-out portion 8 on the outer face thereof. The opposite arm 9 of the body portion 5 is preferably enlarged and provided with a longitudinally extending lubricating chamber or bore l0 the lower end of which is preferably screw-threaded as indicated at 11, the upper end thereof communicating with a transverse opening 12, and said transverse opening communicating on the outer end thereof with a cut-out portion 13.
Adjustably mounted in the chamber 10, is a screw-bolt 14 the external threads thereof being engaged with the internal threads Application led Octoberfl, 1913.
"provided with A:18 which Ais of Patented 'seriaino.792,s37.rmi of the arm9, said screw-bolt'beingpro-H vided in order trolley harp,!the marginal edger thereof coniorming tothe configuration of themarginal edges of said harp and said pole plate, said` wear plate being-provided with an opening 17 therein through which the swivel bolt `18 lpasses so asto en age .the trolley plate therewith, vsaid swive bolt extending lupwardly through the harpl and having engagement" therewith, lthe lo'wer endA of said boltprovided with' anA eye through which is engaged the trolley cable,
a second opening "or" aperture a diameter smaller than that of the `opening` 17 vand has the one end thereof preferably tapered, in order that the rivet or screw which is associated therewith, may be countersunk so as to allow for th free movement of the harp on the trolley po e.
Mounted in proximity to the upper end of the'trolley harp 5, is an axle 19 which is preferably hollow as indicatedat 20, for a portion of its length, said hollow portion having' a pair of apertures 21 and 22 opening thereinto,
the movement of the axle 1n the transverse openings which are formed in proximity to the upper end of the arms 6 and 9. n
In operation the chamber 10 is filled with a lubricant, preferably a solid lubricant be-l ing used, and when it 1s desired to dispense the same through the aperture 22 and into oww;
said plate being los the bore 2O 'of `the axle 19, pressure is exerted 4on the screw-bolt 14, which as is evident normally lies in the lower end'of said arm, and is actuated by-turningthe same Yso as to cause the contents of said chamber to be dispensed therethrough and into ysaid axle, so as to lubricate the trolley' wheel which is lmounted thereon. It is `o'f 'course obvious that after the chamber l0' has been acked with a lubricant, that one revolution of the screw-bolt -lll will be sufficient to lubricate the trolley wheel which is mounted o'n theaxle 19 for a. certain length ,of time.
It willbe understood that the above description and accompanying drawings comprehend lonly the general `and preferred embodiment of my invention and that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion vand arrangement of the parts may be made within the scope of the'app ended Vvclaim and without sacrificing any ofthe advantages of my invention.
Having thus fully ndescribed my invention what I Yclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A v,trolley harp including a substantially Us'haped'body, one of the arms of said body being enlarged transversely and provided with h la longitudinally extending lubricant chamber, an axle hav-ing its ends journaled through the arms of said body and'arranged @epics ofthispatent-maybe obtained for of said r'stfmcirtioned aperture, vas and five cents earliuby addressing lthe washmgtonfaza Y:
to project to each side thereof, said axle provided with a centrally arranged longitudinally extending compartment terminating short of the ends thereof, said axle being t passed through said lubricant chamber, and provided with an aperture communicating :with ysaid compartment and with said chamber, Asaidfaxle being further provided with an egress openingto communicate with said compartment substantially intermediate its ends whereby the lubricantmay be supplied to the 'trolleypivheeh the. arms of said body portion provided: with receiving grooves adjacent be vpassed through the ends of said axle beyiond the `outerFfacesfof said arms to lie in said grooves whereby said axle will be held against turning `movement, said axle being removablev from either Vside of said arms, and a force feed member to :be removably mounted in said lubricant c'hamber'to force the lubricant Vto said compartment by wfay or the purpose specified., 1
