Specification of Letters Patent.
CONTROLLER-SUPPORT FOR DENTAL CHAIRS.
Patented Feb. 20, 1917.
Application filed November 8 1913. Serial No. 799,940.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL D. STRoHM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Controller-Supports for Dental Chairs, of which the following is aspecification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention has relation to controller" supports for dental chairs, and has for its object the provision of a novel means of supporting a controller or other similar electric motor current regulating device by and in such relation to the rotatable part of the base of a dental chair as to be wholly free from contact with the floor and so as to partake of the rotary movement of the said rotatable part of the base. 7
The common practice heretofore has been to locate the controller which is operated by the foot of the dentist directly on the floor in as convenient proximity to the chair as possible. This is objectionable for the reason that as the chair must be frequently turned around to different positions during dental operations the position of the controller must be correspondingly changed so as to be constantly accessible and avoid being an obstruction or obstacle.
In carrying my invention into effect, I obviate the above and other objections to the present manner of locating the controller in permanent position on the floor, by mounting the controller on a bracket of novel form and construction attached to a rotatable portion of the base of the chair in proximity to, but free from contact with the floor, so that the controller will partake of the rotary movements of the chair and at the same time will always maintain a fixed position relative to the chair seat and to the various pedals, etc, with which dental chairs are provided.
My invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure l is a horizontal sectional view of the lower or base portion of a dental chair of ordinary construction showing my improved controller support in position thereon, the view being taken on the dotted line w-ev of Fig. 2, looking downward.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same showing also a the foot rest. I
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a curved supporting arm constituting a portion of the controller supporting means, and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a bracket by means of which the curved supporting arm, shown in Fig. 3, is adjustably attached to the chair.
The chair shown is of an ordinary and well known form and has the usual seat 1, and foot rest 2. The seat 1 is mounted on and secured to the vertically adjustable, telescopic plunger 3 which fits into the vertically, adjustable, tubular portion 4 which, in turn, fits into the rotatable base portion 5. The rotatable base portion 5 is seated in a stationary base portion 6 and the latter is firmly bolted to the floor. The various pedals and other appliances for raising the chair seat, locking the parts in position, and lowering, the same are not all shown in the drawing it being unnecessary to show the same, but I have, however, shown the main raising lever designated 7, it aswell as the other pedals, etc., above referred to being portion of the chair seat and :carried by the rotatable part 5', which, it should be understood, rotates, but is not vertically adjustable.
Upon the vertical side of the rotatable,
part 5 of the base of the chair is fixed a bracket composed of the vertical foot 8, curved to conform to the curvatures of the surface of part5 and the horizontal plate 9. The vertical foot 8 of the bracket is provided with slots 10, through which pass screws 11, which serve to secure the bracket to the part 5, and permit of adjustment thereon in a vertical direction. The horizontal plate 9, is formed with a curved slot,
12, that receives the squared shank 13 of a depending curved arm 14, the upper end of which is screw threaded to receive a thumb-nut 15, by means of which the arm 14, is held at any desired non rotatable position in the slot 12.
The lower end of the arm 14, carries a horizontally disposed cross-shaped plate 16, having a cross-shaped slot 17, and a controller or other electric current regulating device 18, of any desired construction, is mounted on the plate 16, and held in position by a bolt 19, which should be provided with a square shank similar to the square shank 13, of arm 14, so that the controller 18, may be adjusted in position on the plate 16, by sliding the bolt along any of the branches of the cross-shaped slot 17, Without turning the controller around.
The controller is provided with the usual levers 20, by means of Which the electric current, Which operates the motor of the dental engine or other instrument, is regulated.
in attaching my improvement to a chair, it is only necessary to bore and tap holes in the side of the rotatable base portion 5, of the chair to receive the screws 11, Which pass through the slots 10, in the vertical foot 8, of the bracket. After thebracket is attached and before the screws are tightened up, it can be moved up or down to elevate the plate 16, at the desired height above the floor. Adjustment of the arm 14, at any desired radial position relatively to the base of the chair Within the limit of the length of the curved slot 12, and adjustment of the position of the controller on the plate 16, is obtained by means of the, cross-shaped slot 17, and the bolt 19, as before stated.
I claim 1. The combination with a dental chair having a rotatable base portion, of a support for the controller of a dental engine Which is independent of the chair, consisting of a depending arm secured to the revolving portion of the chair and provided with means for supporting said controller near the floor.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for ing arm having its upper end extending through the slotin said plate, a nut on said arm to secure it in position in the said slotted plate, and a horizontally disposed plate carried by said depending arm and adapted to hold a controller.
4. The combination with a chair having a rotatable base portion mounted on a stationary base portion, of a bracket secured 'to the rotatable base portion and comprismg a vertical foot and a horizontal plate,
a depending arm adjustablyattached to the horizontal plate of said bracket, said depending arm having a slotted plate at its lower end, a controller adjustably mounted on said slotted plate and a bolt carried by the controller and adapted to secure the controller to the slotted plate.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
