STAY-BOLT STRUCTURE.
Application filed February 29, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, BENJAMIN E. D. STAFFORD and ETHAN I. DoDDs, citizens of the United States, and residents of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pelmsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stay-Bolt Structures; and we do hereby declare .the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in stay bolt structures and more particularly to means for effecting a tight connection between the bearing sleeve and the cap,
the object of our present invention is to .pro-
ride a yielding connection between the sleeve and cap whereby a tight joint may be of fected between these parts without necessity for screwing the cap on the sleeve with such excessive pressure as to render it difficult to remove the cap.
lVith this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a sectional view showing one embodiment of our invention, and Figs. 2, 3, 4, 6, 7 and 8 show other forms of the same.
1 represents the outer sheet of a boiler structure, having a threaded hole for the ac commodation of a sleeve 2, the outer portion of said sleeve being formed interiorly with a curved seat for the rounded head 3 of a stay bolt and the remaining portion of the bore of the sleeve is made somewhat flaring to permit lateral movement of the bolt.
The sleeve 2 projects outwardly beyond the boiler sheet 1 and near its free end is threaded exteriorly as shown at 5 to receive the interiorly threaded flange of a cap 6 disposed over the head of the bolt.
In the embodiment of our invention shown in Fig. 1, the cap is provided interiorly, near the juncture of the bodyof the cap with the flange 5 thereof, with a yielding member 7 which may be slightly curved and formed at its free edge with an outwardly curved bead 8. When the cap is screwed onto the sleeve, the head 8 of the yielding member or flange 7 will be pressed Specification of Letters Patent.

against the outer end of the sleeve 2 and thus a .tight yielding connection between the cap and sleeve will be provided and will re main tlght, without necessity for screwing the cap upon the sleeve with excessive pres sure as would be the case if the yielding means between said cap and sleeve were not provided.
Instead of forming the cap with an outward curve or bead, the yielding member may be made at its free edge with an inwardly projecting bead 9 to bear againstthe end of the sleeve as shown in Fig. 2, or the sleeve may be provided at its outerend with a yielding flange 10 having an outwardly curved portion 11 to bear against a flat face 12 within the cap 6. If desired, the sleeve 2 may be provided with an inwardly curved yielding flange'13 to bear against the flat face in the cap as shown in Fig. 4.
In the form of our invention shown in Fig. 5, the flanged portion of the cap is formed with a reduced corrugated or fluted portion 14 which provides the yielding ieans in the connection between the cap and the sleeve, and in Fig. 6, we have shown a similar corrugated or fluted member 15 formed integral with the outer end of the sleeve, said corrugated 0r fluted yielding member 15 bearing against a flat face 16 formed within the cap 6.
In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 7, the yielding connection between the cap and sleeve is formed by yielding members 17, 18 (such as shown in Figs. 5 and 6) on both of said parts.
In Fig. 8, we have shown the sleeve pro.- vided with a corrugated or fluted member 19 having a bearing against one of several folds of a, corrugated or fluted cap 20. In the embodiment of our invention, the fluted cap is made with a central opening 21 to expose a tell-tale hole 22 in the bolt, and the outer portion 23 of the capv is pressed against the head of the bolt with yielding pressure afforded by the corrugated or fluted form of the cap.
Other changes might be made in the details of construction of our invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope, and hence we do not wish to be restricted to the precise details herein set forth, except as defined by the scope of the appended claims.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. In a stay bolt structure, the combination with a bearing sleeve and a cap removably attached to the exterior thereof and extending over the end of the sleeve, of a yielding member carried by one of said parts and engaging the other part.
In a stay boltstructure, the combination with a bearing sleeve having an exteriorly threaded part, anda cap to screw on the threaded Dart of the sleeve, of a yielding member carried by one of said parts and cngaging the other part near the threaded connection oi? said parts with each other.
3. In a stay bolt structure, the combination of a bearing sleeve and a cap engaging the same, both of said parts provided with interposed yielding members.
4. In a stay bolt structure, the combination with a bearing sleeve, and a stay bolt having a bearing therein, of a cap provided with yielding means engaging said sleeve and also engaging the head of the bolt.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the 5. In a stay bolt structure, the combina tion with a bearing sleeve, astay bolt providedwith a head having a bearing in said sleeve, of a yielding cap connected with said sleeve and having the sleeve and against the head of the stay bolt.
6. In a stay bolt structure, the combination with a bearing sleeve provided with a yielding member at its outer end, and a Commissioner of Patents,
