To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN ALDEN LEE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the town of Oelwein, in the county of Fayette and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Marker Clips; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a book marking device adapted to be attached to or detached from the page of a book without in any way interfering with the opening or closing thereof, and has for its object to provide certain improvements in the construction of the same as will hereinafter be more definitely pointed out and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a book in open position with book marker devices embodying the principles of my invention attached to certain pages thereof.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan View of one of the marking devices.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view thereof shown attached to a page.
As shown in the drawings:
The covers of a book are denoted respectively by the reference numerals 1 and 2, with pages 3, bound therebetween. My invention for attachment to one or more pages is illustrated in detail in Figs. 2 and 3, and a number of the devices so constructed are shown attached to different pages of the book illustrated in Fig. 1.
The device consists of a unitary strip of resilient metal bent to form double ply jaws 4 and 5, respectively, of which the member 5, of the jaws is slightly longer than the member 4, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The ends of the metal strip afford actuating finger pieces 6 and 7, respectively which, when pinched together, serve to open the jaws 4 and 5. If desired, as clearly shown upon the devices illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, an indicating character ,or numeral may be enameled on the upper surface of the finger piece 6, or attached thereto in any suitable manner, if so desired. It is to be understood that the illustration of the device in Figs. 2 and 8,- is considerably enlarged. This is obvious when it is remembered that the thickness of a page of a book is very small, so that the required movement for separation of the jaws 4 and 5, to grip the margin of a page is, to all intents and purposes, practically negligible.
The elongated jaw 5, greatly facilitates attachment of the clip to a page, as said jaw may be projected beneath a page and the jaws then opened to engage the page therebetween. However, the possible opening of the jaws 4 and 5, is sufficient to permit more than one page to be gripped therebetween if so desired, although ordinarily this is unnecessary.
The clip is also formed with reinforcing ribs 8,which afford recesses for reception of the tips of the fingers, thus facilitating manipulation of the clips. Then, too, an indicating character such as the numeral 5, printed on paper or celluloid, may be placed fiat within the recessed portion of the clip on the portion 6, thereof.
am aware that various details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
A book marker clip, comprising a single piece of spring material bent at substantially its center to form substantially a semicircular portion, the ends of said material being again folded upon themselves to form clamping jaws, one of said jaws being longer than the other, the material at the ends of said jaws being extended upon the opposite side of the semi-circular portion, said opposite ends forming finger pieces for manipulating said clamping jaws and being provided with reinforcing ribs which afford recesses to receive indicating characters therein.
