Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ERNEST C. LAWTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mohawk, in the county'of Herkimer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knockdown Bookcases, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improvement in knock down sectional book cases and the object is to provide meansfor fastening the several sections together as they are stacked and keeping them alined.

The invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a perspective view of a base, book section and top to show the manner of assemblage;

Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail sectional view showing the manner of connecting an end of the book section to the base or bottom of the book section;

Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of one end of a book section;

Fig. 4 is a top plan View of one end of a book section;

Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view showing the manner of mounting the pins in the ends of the book section.

A book section is disclosed in Fig. l which consists of ends 1, a shelf or bottom 2 and back 3. Several sectional members are as sembled in the manner shown, the end sections being provided along their lower edges with the grooves 4 and tenons 5 for forming a dovetail connection and the shelf or bottom 2 being provided with grooves 6 and tenons 7, the tenons 7 of the shelf being received in the grooves 4 of the end members, and the tenons 5 of the end members being received in the grooves 6 of the shelf member. The second tenon from each side of the shelf member is omitted, thus leaving one of the grooves of the end member open and forming a cavity C for the reception of a key or pin 9 carried by the upper edge of the end member 1 of the section below. The end members 1 are provided with dovetail sockets in their upper edge in which the dovetailed or keystone shaped pins 9 are received. These pins are adapted to pass into the cavity C of the adjacent shelf member 2 of the book section, and as shown in Fig. 1 the top member B is provided with openings 10 for the reception of the pins 9 for fastening the top section to the book section. The base section D, is also provided with pins 9 which enter the cavities G of the book section for fastening the book section to the base.

From the foregoing it will be seen that I. have provided a very simple means of fastening several book sections together and mounting the book sections upon the base member and for mounting the top member upon the book sections whereby the several book sections, top and base will be firmly held together, an enlargement or cavity being formed of greater size than the usual dovetailed grooves which are formed in the shelf members by removing one of the tenons which forms a passage or cavity in the shelf members through which a pin or tenon can be inserted into the vacant grooves of the end sections which are left open by the removal of the second tenons from each side of the shelf member or section.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a knock-down bookcase, the combination of base, top and book sections, each book section consisting of end, back, and shelf members, the end and shelf members provided with grooves and tenons, the tenons of the end member adapted to fit the ends of the shelf member, and the tenons of the shelf member adapted to fit the grooves of the end members, one of said members having a tenon omitted therefrom, thereby forming a cavity by the groove of the other member and the space formed by omitting said tenon, and a pin carried by the end member of an adjacent section adapted to enter said cavity for holding the sections together.
