To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, lVILLIAM BERGIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lewistown, in the county of Fergus and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates and Operating Mechanism for the Same, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in gates and operating mechanism for the same.
The primary object of this invention resides in the provision of a gate having improved operating mechanism which may be controlled from either side of the gate to open or close the latter.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of gate operating mechanism which will be composed of the minimum number of parts of simple construction and highly ellicient in use.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of gate operating mechanism including a drum and ratchet wheel mounted upon the single shaft adapted to rotate together under influence of operating pawls suspended from said shaft and controlled by operating cords to either open or close the gate, according to the cord manipulated.
With these eneral objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like-designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved form of gate and operating mechanism, with the gate in closed position.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is an elevation at right angles to Fig. 1, and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary side elevation showing the arrangement of the operating pawls.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, 1 designates a gate including a lower rail 2 adapted to pass between a pair of guide rollers 3 as the gate 1 passes the post 4. The gate 1 also includes the upper rail 5 which Specification of Letters Patent.

is extended rearwardly of the gate and adapted to ride upon the guide roller 6 carried by the post 8. It will be understood that the posts 8, 4:, and 9 are in alinement, the post 9, carrying vertical strips 10 between which the forward vertical edge of the gate 1 is engaged when saidgate is in closed position between the posts 9 and ft as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The rollers 6 and 7 are preferably grooved to retain the upper rail 5 in proper horizontal position. I also provide a small plane roller 11 for engagement with the upper edge of the upper rail 5, said roller 11 being mounted upon the post A above the roller 6. It will also be understood that suitable bracket 12 is mounted upon the post 4 and provided with upstanding portions to support the roller 3.
The upper rail 5 carries at its forward end an L-shaped bracket member 13 which rests upon the forward end of the gate 1. An L- shaped bracket 14; is also mounted upon the supporting strip 15 extended rearwardly from the rear end of the gate 1 and secured to the upper rail 5 at a point past the post 4 when the gate 1 is in closed position. The opposite ends of a cable 16 are secured in the extended arms of the brackets 13 and 14k and said cable 16 is engaged around the drum 17, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing.
The drum 17 is mounted upon the shaft 18 projecting from the side of a post 19 positioned to one side of the line of posts 9, 4:, and 8 and slightly rearwardly of the post 4. A ratchet wheel 20 is also mounted upon the shaft 18 and adapted for rotation with a drum 17 A pair of bracket members or straps 21 are loosely mounted upon the shaft 18 to form supports for the oppositely acting pawls 22 engaged through the lower looped ends of the same and having their lower ends pivoted upon the outwardly slanting arms 23 projectingfrom the lower looped ends of said bracket members or straps 21 as clearly shown in Fig. 4.
The pawls 22 have downwardly bent upper or outer ends 24C with weights 25 mounted upon the same to return the pawls to normal position after each operation. Operating rods 26 are pivoted at their lower ends to the upper or outer ends 24 of said pawls 22 and provided with looped upper ends 27, the purpose of which will presently appear. provided for each rod 26, said cords being secured to the end 27 thereof and extended through a suitable opening in the turned supporting beam35. The beam 35 is mountedin. a suitablemanner upon the upper end of the post 19 and provided with bracket members 36. After being passed around the-pulleys 33, the operating cords 28 are extended towardthe opposite ends of the beam 35--and engaged over the guide pulleys 37 in the brackets 38 mounted upon the ends of said beam 35. The operating cords 28 are finally engaged through the oppositely bent portions of the lower ends 39 of the depending'members 4:0 and provided with suitable rings 41' or the like upon their free extremities. Itwill be understood the members 4O arepivotedin suitable manner to the lower face of the beam 35.
Fromthe foregoing, it will be apparent thata .party approaching the gate from either side, may readily open the same and then close the gate by manipulating the proper operating cords 28. It will be understood that when strain is exerted upon either cord connected with one of the pawls 27, said pawl will be drawn upwardly, thereby causing the strap 21 within which it is supported to swing upon the shaft 18, the teeth of the pawl engaging the teeth of the ratchet wheel 20 and causing rotation of the gear 20 and drum 1 7 in the proper direction to either open or close the gate according to the pawl operated. The weights 25 will automatically return the pawls 22 to proper position as the cords are released.
While the form of the invention herein shown and described is what is believed to be the preferred embodiment thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as new is 2- A gate and operating mechanism comprising a plurality of supporting posts, guide rollers mounted upon said posts. a gate member adapted to ride upon said guide rollers to open and closed position, means carried by one of said posts to receive the forward edge of the gate member when the latter is in closed position, a cable carried by said gate member, a drum, said cable being engaged around said drum, a pawl and ratchet mechanism for rotating said drum in either direction, means extended to either side of the gate member to operate either pawl, and supporting means for the lastmentioned means.
