Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 28,1912.
Application filed Aprl 22, 1910. Serial No. 557344.
To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. KEMP, a
citizen of the United States, residing at` Lyon Station, in-the county of Berks, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the j art to which it appertains to make and use' thesame.
The invention relates to gate fasteners and the primary object of theinvention is the provision of agate in which the body thereof is preferably constructed of Wire netting so that on the opening of the gate the same may be rolled or folded on itself and when the said gate has been closed it will have the appearance of the section of a wire fence.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a gate in which"`there is employed a wire mesh body so that the said body when the gate is closed may be stretched taut between the gate posts Whereby the possibility of the gate becoming accidentally opened will be obviated and at the same time it will have the appearance of the continuation of the wire fence at opposite sides of the gate.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a gate which may be readily and Conveniently opened or closed at will should'the gate posts become out of proper alinement with each other or inclined relative to their normal vertical axes.
Withthese and other objects in View the invention consists in the Construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described illustrated in the accompanying drawings disclosing the preferred form of embocliment of the invention and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings: Figure l is a perspective elevation of a gate and fastener therefor constructed in accordance with the invention, the gate being show'n in open position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, the gate being shown in closed position. Fig. 3 is a sectional View on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the fastener and a portion of the gate, the same being on an enlarged scale.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several Views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings by numerals 5 and 6 designate a pair of spaced vertical gate posts of the ordinary well known construction, the same bein anchored at their lower ends in the ground in the usual manner and connected to the gate post 6 are the end portions of longitudinal runner wires 7 of a wire fence, the said wires being connected in the ordinary manner by suitable staples 8 to the said posts.
The gate comprises a pluralty of spaced horizontal wires 9 through which are woven in a zigzag manner a plurality of vertical or stay wires 10, the same being connected at opposite ends to the uppermost and lowermost horizontal wires 9 by means of eye eXtremities 11, the latter being formed by curling the ends of the wires 10 about the said upper and lower horizontal wires of the gate. Each horizontal wire 9 at one end is formed with an eye 12 linked to a similar eye 13 formed on the end portion of each runner wire 7 of the fence and in this manner the said gate is freely hinged to the said runner wires of the fence whereby the gate may be swung to opened or closed position as the occasion may require. Secured to the remaining free ends of the horizontal wires 9 of the gate is a fiat vertically disposed metal bar 14, the same being secured to the said wires in any suitable manner so as to prevent its separation therefrom.
The gate fastener comprises a stationary beam or bar 15 the same being Secured to one side face of the posts 5 preferably by means of detachable screws 16 and to this bar 15 are connected swinging links 17 by means of pivots 18, the said links being also connected by means of pivots 19 to a movable latch bar 20 adapted to approach and retreat from the stationary bar 15 in a manner as will be hereinafter more fully described.
Secured to the latch bar 20 in spaced relation are hook shaped fastening arms 21 the outer hook extremities of which are adapted to engage the bar 14 of the gate when the latter is to be closed. Pivoted to 'the stationary bar is a substantially trianguthis plate is fixed a handle or throw leVer 24 Whereby the said plate may be moved on its pivot for causing the approach and retreat of the latch bar toward and away from the stationary bar for the latching and releasing of the gate.
It is obvious that the gate when being latched by the fastener will be drawn taut between the gate posts.
What is claimed is The combination with a gate having :i vertical bar at ts free end; of a fastener for said gate, said fastener comprisng a stationary vertical bar supported at the closing point of said free end, a pair of links pivotally connected to the stationary bar, a movable bar pivotally connected to the free end of the links toward the free end and adapted for movement away from the stationary bar andto conta'ct therewith, arms rigidly Secured to the movable bar and having hook extremities to engage with the Vertical bar of the gate,
r shifting the latter upon its pivot to operate the movable bar and serving to hold said bar in either position by its weight.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
