Be it known that I, SAME PATERNO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milford, county of Worcester, State of Massa chusetts, have invented an Improvement in llfiechanical Toys, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts.
This invention relates to an improvement in, mechanical toys.
An object of this invention is the construction of a novel toy structure which provides platforms movable at the will of the operator and upon which platforms are positioned representations of various objects and figures more or less fanciful and pleasing.
Another object is to construct such a mechanical toy that it may be readily assembled and demounted affording opportunity for some elemental training of the young in primary mechanical movements and to afford ease in packing and shipment and in replacement and repair of any injured parts.
Other objects of the invention will more fully appear from the following description and the accompanying drawings and will be pointed out in the annexed claims.

In this selected embodiment of the invention there are disposed two platforms which are rotatably supported. To augment the fanciful efiect of this device, the platforms are preferably rotatably actuable in opposite directions. The turning post may conslst of a single integral rod but herein it consists of several sections suitably joined to function as a single member. The shaft 1 is supported in the base 2 of the box-like casing 3, the top 1 of which. is suitably apertured to clear the shaft. The lower end of the shaft 1, which as shown is preferably tapered, is rotatably mounted in the base 2 by means of a bearing offered by means of a substantially centrally projecting boss 5 of the base. mounted loosely thereon a sleeve 6. Any
suitable means may be provided for the actuation 1n opposite directions of the shaft and its sleeve but for this purpose there are employed the relatively inexpensive stamped spur gears of the usual type where a relatively small amount of power is to be transmitted. The spur 7 is fixed to the actuating shaft 8 journaled in the bracket 9 secured to the top 4 and base 2 of the casing by means of screws 10. The outer end of this actuating shaft is offset and has secured thereto a handle 11 for the convenient manual operation of the device. The spur 7 meshes with the similar spurs 12 and 13. The spur 12 is affixed to the shaft 1 and functions, upon its actuation, to revolve the shaft 1. The spur 13 is aflixed to the sleeve 6 and obviously rcvolves it in the reverse direction. The lower platform 141 is suitably apertured to receive therethrough the shaft 1 and is positioned upon the annular shoulder 15 formed on the upper end of the sleeve 6. This platform 14 is suitably secured to the sleeve 6 and is revoluble therewith. The upper platform 17 is carried by the shaft 1, being supported preferably by means of a pin inserted in the aperture 18 of the shaft 1. The upper platform 17 is thus revoluble with the shaft 1 while the lower is revoluble in the reverse direction with the sleeve 6. Preferably, the central apertures of the respective platforms are each provided with a downwardly projecting annular shoulder 25 as shown on the platform 14 in Fig. 4c. Representations of figures and various objects are placed upon the revoluble platforms, a few fanciful objects being shown in the drawings herein, while the edges of the two platforms shown are given a decorative effect.
The upper portion of the shaft may be journaled in any suitable manner, but, in this embodiment, is preferably afforded a bearing member carried by the upper frame of this device. The uprights, preferably four, form the supporting structure of the frame of the upper portion of the toy.
The lower portions 19 of the uprights form reinforcing corner posts for the four corners of the lower casing. The upper portions 20 of the uprights preferably are given a decorative shape to attain a fanciful effect in the assembled toy. The cross bars 21 are of novel configuration and are suitably secured to the squared upper end portions of the uprights. The crown bars 22 preferably radiate from the bearing member or crown 23. Each of the lower ends of these crown -bars is constructed to effect a mortised joint with the top of one of the respec tive uprights, while each of the upper ends of these crown bars 22 is preferably constructed to effect a mortised joint with the crown 28. The upper end of each of the bars 22 is apertured to correspond to an aperture in the crown wherein may be received a pin, screw or similar instrumentality. This crown is suitably centrally apertured to receive and to afford an upper bearing'for the shaft 1. These crown bars, similarly to the cross-bars and uprights, are preferably fancifully ornamented so that the whole frame-work achieves a decorated effect. Herein, the crown is provided with four apertures in each of which the end of a fanciful cord is retained. Each cord has secured thereto objects representing leaves while the lower end thereof, passed through an aperture in the lower end of the crown bar, has secured thereto a depending fanciful object. In this embodiment of the invention the upper end portion of the shaft 1 is vertically apertured to receive in snug engagement therein the end of a short stem 2a which enters an aperture in the end portion of a mast-head member, a selected embodiment of which is shown bearing the letters U. S. A.
This mechanical toy is of relatively few shaft comprising a plurality of complementary demountable sections, object-bearing means demountably carried by and rotatable with one of said sections, a sleeve demountably positioned on one of said sections and revoluble independently thereof, object-bearing means demountably carried on said sleeve and rotatable therewith, and means for rotating said sleeve and said sectional shaft in opposite directions.

A toy comprising a base, an upwardly projecting frame, a rotatable shaft, said shaft comprising a plurality of complementary demountable sections, object-bearing means demountably carried by and rotatable with one of said sections, a sleeve demountably positioncd on one of said sections and revolublc independently thereof, objectbearing means demountably carried on said sleeve and rotatable therewith, said sectional shaft resting in a. bearing on the base, an upper bearing demountably held. by said frame-work, and means for rotating said sleeve and said sectional shaft in opposite directions.
3. A toy comprising a base, an upwardly projecting frame, a rotatable shaft, said shaft comprising a plurality of complementary demountable sections, object-bearing means demountably carried by and rotatable with one of said sections, a sleeve demountably positioned 011 one of said sections and revoluble independently thereof, objectbearing means demountably carried on said sleeve and rotatable therewith, a bearing on the base in which the shaft end rests, a member apertured to form an upper bearing for said sectional shaft, a plurality of bars demountably engaging said bearing member, said bars being secured to said frame whereby said upper bearing is supported, and means for rotating said sleeve and said sectional shaft in opposite directions.
