Application filed January 7, 1916. Serial No. 70,838.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ,ANDREW HELDRIOH, a citizen of the United States, resident of Philadephia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have made acertain new and useful Invention in Autographic Registers; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being I had .to the accompanying drawings, and to said frame and located at the forward end letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a side view of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a'plamview of the same.
Fig.3 is a section on the line'3-3 Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective View of one of the detachable units.

Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of a cover plate.
The invention has relation to autographic registers for use in registering or recording memorandums and sales in mercantile and other transactions, and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the numeral 2 designates a frame or casing, consisting of sides 3, held together by transverse braces 4, said sides having central perforations 5, pivotally engaging a rod 6 carried by standards 7 ,said standards located upon a base 8.
Fitting within the casing is a detachable frame 9,'consisting of a platform plate 10, provided with inward extensions 11, 11', carrying a rod 12 and a rotary spindle 13 .designed respectively to receive the paper supply or feed roll 14 and for winding of the paper to constitute the record roll 15, the paper passing from the supply roll out-. wardly longitudinally over the platform. plate, the upper sheet or sheets of paper 16 passing then over a roller 17, carried by of the platform plate and carrying an annular series ofshort pointed teeth or proout of the casing. The lower sheet or sheets of paper 19 also pass over this roller, in engagement with the points thereof, and thence inwardly to the record spindle,to'which they are made fast at the end, for winding.
. In order to insure that the paper sheets shall be pressed into engagement with the points of the feed roller, a pressure device is employed, consisting preferably of a rubber roller 20, having bearings in upper extensions 20 of the frame 9 and located immediately over the feed roller and usually in contact therewith, the teeth of the feed roller usually engaging the rubber'of the roller through an annular series of perforations, formed therein by the teeth themselves.
Provision is made for carbon impressions, usually by a longitudinal carbon supply rod 21, engaging lateral extensions 21" at one side of said frame 9, the carbon sheet or sheets passing from said rod transversely over the platform plate, between the paper sheets passing'longitudinally over the platform plate, the carbon sheet being at its free end wound around a longitudinal roller 22, engaging lateral extensions 22 at the other side of the frame 9.- Upon turning of the roller 22, a new supply of carbon paper will be fed between the paper sheets, and the worn carbon wound upon said roller.
The frame 9, carrying the supply roll of paper, with the paper sheets therefrom suitably adjusted over the platform plate, in engagement with theteeth of the feed roller, and with the record sheet in engagement at its end with the. record spindle, and the carbon sheets suitably adjusted in position, is slidably fitted into the open top of the easmg, in engagement, through the medium of the lateral extensions 21" 22, with guides 23 of said casing, after which a cover plate 24 is fitted over the platform plate, said cover plate having at one end a thicker portion 25, wherein is located a transverse slot 26, between upper and lower horizontal ment with this slot, and out of the machine.
,The frame 9 is provided with upward projecting lugs engaging the cover plate, the" platform plate-being thereby spaced apart from the cover plate by an interval wherein the paper passes over the platform plate,
said lugs usually forming part of the lat-- eral extensions 21, 22, and of rear guide lugs 23 casing, for manipulation.
The four .cover plates abut at the ends, and the plates close respectively the open ends of the openings 31 of the adjacent plates.
. The-carbon supply rod is also provided with a shorter milled handle 21 located Within the casing. The record spindle 13 is provided with a crank handle 33, and the supply rod 12 is provided with a milled .ihandle 33', which fit respectively within open- end slots 34, 34 of the casing. The
cover plate being placed in position, screws 35, having milledheads, are engaged with threaded perforations 30 of the casing, to secure the plate in position.
Means are provided to adjustably check the movement of the paper supply roll,'as may be required, consisting preferably of a threadedend 36 of the supply rod, engaging a threaded perforation 36 of an inward extension 11 of the frame, the extensions 11 being made of spring character, so that when the milled handle of the supply rod is turned the shoulder of said handle will bear against an extension and the extensions will be drawn toward each other into frictional engagement with the paper roll. This threaded engagement of the end of the supply rod also enables the supply rod to be readily removed from the frame when a new .ing to press the supply roll is to be inserted in the machine.
Means are provided to detachably hold the record spindle 13 in the frame, consisting usually of a head 37 of said spindle and a groove 38 behind said head, which is inserted through a perforation of an inward extension 11 a spring 39 of the frame engaging said groove, between said head and the said extension. .Upon release of the spring the spindle may be slid out endwise from its bearings in the frame extensions. This spindle is provided with means for fastening the end of the paper sheet thereto,
usually consisting of a flat side 40 and a rod 21'. The carbon feed roller has also releasable engagement with the frame, preferably by means of a headed end 43, passing through a perforation of a lateral extension 22 of the frame 9, a spring 44 of said frame engaging a groove of said rod behind said head, the other end of said roll passing through a perforation of the other extension teeth or in which the teeth are located. This feed roller is usually engaged with inclined open-end grooves 49 of the frame 9, the
rubber roller being then secured in position above the feed roller, and through engagement with the teeth of the roller serving to keep the feed roller in position.
A hand rest 50 is provided at the forward end of the machine, said rest being carried by a lateral arm 51, made fast to the pivot rod of the machine by suitable means, as asplit clamp device 52, having a screw 53 engaging the branches of the clamp and serving to force them into tight'engagement with said rod. Means are provided to hold the rotary casing stationary with any face or platform plate thereof uppermost, consisting preferably of a spring-pressed rod 54, carried by said lateral arm 51 and automatically engaging any one of four electric perforations 51 of the casing, corresponding to the four sides thereof. By varying the adjustment of the clamp 52 upon the pivot rod, the inclination of the faces or platform plates of the machine may be varied as desired.
It is preferred to provide the casing with a plurality of faces, usually four, as shown, to provide for the entry and recording of sales of a number of different kinds or classes, each face being provided with a detachable frame 9, carryingsa paper supply roll, a rec- .ord rod having the end of the paper fastened .thereto, a platform plate over which the paper passes, a feed roller and an upper pressure roller between which the paper is suitably adjusted, a carbon supply roll and a' carbon roll upon which the worn carbon is wound, the carbon sheets being suitably adjusted between the paper sheets, said frame and the /parts carried thereby constituting a unit which may be conveniently handled and greatly facilitating the gecessary adjustments of the paper and car- When the record roll is complete, the
' unit is detached from the machine, refilled and replaced in the machine; These units may be placed in the machine by an unskilled person, the register then being ready for use.
