To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ULYSSES GRANT Gave, a. citizen of the United States, resident of Louisville, in the county of Jefierson and State of Kentucky, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Autographic Begisters; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description 0 the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, an to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, whic form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 is a side view of the invention, shown as adjusted pivotally in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the invention. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33, Fig. 1, showing the casing as turned down upon one side in dotted lines. Fig. 1 is a plan view of the invention, with parts broken away, the casing being turned down upon one side. Fig. 5 is a section'on the line 5-5, Fig. Fig. 6 is a section on the'line 6-6, Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a detail side view of the hand rest, and parts adjacent thereto, said rest being shown as adjusted pivotally in dotted lines.

Ihe invention has relation to autographic registers of comparatively large size, to be placed upon a counter or other support, where it is intended to remain and be operated.

The invent-ion consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the numeral 1, designates a frame or casing, which, as the register is designed to provide for the entry and recording of sales of a number of different kinds or classes, has a suitable number of peripheral faces, one face for each class of sales, four faces usually, each face having preferably a platform plate 2, two rotary spindles 3 and 4:, designed respectively to receive the paper supply or feed roll 5 of paper, and for winding of the paper to constitute the record roll 6, the paper passing from the supply roll longitudinally over the platform plate, the upper sheet or sheets of paper 7, 7 passing then over a guide and feed'roller 8, out of the casing, all as de scribed and shown particularly in my copending application for patent executed of Specification of Letters Patent.

Inasmuch as the register is comparatively heavy, the casing thereof is pivoted centrally, the shaft or pivot 7), having bearings in sides a, a, of a base b.

To facilitate the operation of the machine, it is desirable to provide a means for operation of the record spindle, to feed the upper paper sheets and wind the lower paper sheets upon the record roll, which shall be common to each of the four record spindles of the machine and which shall not move with the casing, said means of operation being usually a crank handle 0, having a releasable connection with each record spindle as it comes uppermost in the rotary movement of the casing, the releasable connection being usually spring-pressed, a coiled spring f, being mounted in a recess g, of an upper extension a of the standard (4, located above the pivot of the casing, said spring having engagement with a. head it, also in said recess, to press said head outwardly so that a wrench seatt', thereof, shall be engaged with the polygonal end j, of the record spindle, the stem is, of said head, being turned usually by the crank handle 0, as stated, the outer end of said stem, to which the crank handle is made fast, having a head 77%, in line with the stem, for use when the stem and the head thereof are to be pulled endwise to release the connection between the same and the record spindle, the casing being then turned upon its pivot and compressing the spring 7, said spring expanding and causing automatic engagement of the stem with he next succeeding record spindle, to check the rotary movement of the casing with a platform plate uppermost and to hold the casing stationary. Each platform plate 2 is usually slidably engaged with transverse rods 21, said rods and the record and supply spindles being carried by a stationary side 22 of the casing, the other side 23 of the casing being removable.

t is further desirable that the casing be capable of being turned down upon one side, from engagement with one of the standards a, a, of the base, in order that the removable side of the casing may be detached and the interior of the casing exposed for convenient insertion and removal of the paper rolls, manipulation of the paper, etc, this being accomplished by providing one standard a, of the casing, with a lower hinge a, the pivot of the casing engaging the opposite standard a, of the base, being removable seat within which it is secured, usually by means of a padlock 0, carried by the side a, and having its pivoted hasp engaging over the pivot, so that when the padlock is unlocked and the hasp turned back, the casing may be turned down to rest upon the opposite side a, a cushion p, being usually employed upon this side and having contact with the support or counter. In this position of the casing the platform plates may be slid in and out upon their guide rods, and the record and supply spindles may be removed and reinserted.

In order that the uppermost face of the casing, which is shown in Fig. 1, as horizontal, shall be capable of assuming and being held in an inclined position, the upper extension a of the standard a, is made sepa rate therefrom, and has a clamp connection y, with the pivot shaft 7), so that when the clamp is released, the

The hand rest is preferably foldable, being pivoted upon a rod 8, so that when the hand rest is slid endwise upon said rod a stud 2/, of the arm of, is released from its seat u, in the end flange of the hand rest, which then may be turned pivotally upon said rod, a spring 6, upon the rod, acting to engage the stud with its seat when the hand rest is returned to normal position.

What I claim is:

1. In an autographic register, a stationary support, a hollow casing pivotally mounted upon said support and having a plurality of faces each of which is provided with a platoperating device mounted upon saidsupportand common to and having amovable clutch member for releasable driving connection successively witheach of therecord spindles.

2.
