`Specifica-tion nf Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. '20, 1917.
Application filed October 15, 1915. `Serial No. 55,992.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER F. BACK- Mi'nn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Garment-Fasteners; and I do herebydeclare that the following description of my said invention, taken in connection with the accompanying sheet of drawings, forms a full, clear, and exact specification, which will en.- able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates generally to improvements in garment fasteners, and it consists, essentially, in the novel and peculiar combination of parts and details 1of vconstruction, as hereinafter rst fully set forth `and described and then pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing already referred to, which illustrates the details of my invention more fully,y Figure l discloses theblank ofthe eye member of my invention partially formed to proper shape, and it is now to be stated that this blank is made from relatively springy sheet metallic material, such as brass, German silver, or cold rolled steel. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan of said blank in its finished condition. Fig. 3 is a bottom-plan of the stud member of my invention, and Fig. 4; is a cross section thereof in line 4 4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a cross section of the eye and the stud member in partial assembly, and Fig. 6 is a like section showing the said parts in completely assembled condition. Fig. 7 is a bottom plan of a slightly modified form of eye member, and Fig. 8, a section thereof in line 8-8 of Fig. 7.
Like parts are indicated by corresponding symbols or characters of reference in all the figures of the drawing.
The aim of this invention is the production of a fastener for the owverlapping edges or seams of dresses, coats, waists and other garments in which the disadvantages of the typical hook and eye are eliminated. Among these disadvantages may be named the liability of the hooks and eyes becoming disengaged from each other whereby the iap or seam of the garment becomes loosened and presents an unsightly appearance.
Another result aimed at in this invention is to construct a garment fastener, the elements of which are so flat and so shaped that when the garment to which the fastener -is attached is rbeing passed lthrough a y wash wringer or is being ironed whether' by a mangle `or by hand, there will be no tendency to distort the `parts of the fastener and destroy the usefulness or efficiency thereof, as is now the case with the usual type of hook and eyes.
The eye `member `of my invention is preferably produced from .a substantially disklike blank A, having projecting tongues B and B `projecting from diametrically opposite margins of ,said blank, the latter "of which is much shorter than ,the former.
Concentrically of this blank there is a raised flat portion B, which portion has a slot "C, terminating in an `enlarged opening C', the enlarged opening being off the center 'of the disk A. i
It is now to be stated that `the margin 10 ofthe blank A `is ycurled undersaid blank A in a direction opposite the flat, raised portion B to 'produce a neat `and rounding finish. The projecting tongue B is also bent under the `blank A, `passing directly ;underneath :the slot C and enlarged opening C', and the tongue B is likewise bent back under said blank and underneath said tongue B to support the free end of the latter.
In the upper face of said tongue B, substantially axially beneath the enlarged opening C of the raised portion B is provided a depression D and directly under the slot C, practically medially of the length thereof, there is formed in said tongue a similar depression D', the two depressions being separated by a bridge wall D.
The stud member E of my device is disk like in contour and is possessed of a raised marginal bead 20 and a sunk, concentric, flat faced depression 2l, centrally from which extends a stud 22, having an enlarged head 23, the exterior contour of which head is of the same shape as the depressions D and D of the tongue B.
In assembling the eye and stud `member of my invention, the stud 22 and its head 23 is first passed through the enlarged opening C of the eye member, and it will be observed that when the head 28 is in engagement with the depression D of the tongue B the flat faces B and 21 of the eye and stud member are in facial contact, thereby preventing downward pressure upon the tongue B. The stud member E is now forcibly moved so that the stud 22 will enter the slot C and the head 23 caused to depress the bridge wall D, after which the said head 23 becomes lodged in the depression D', whereon the inherent spring in the tongue B Jforces the said head 23 upwardlyuntil the under side 2 4 thereof contacts againstthe underside of the raised depression B surrounding the slot C, thereby maintaining said stud member in locked connection with said eye member.
Between the margins 10 and 2O and the concentric flattened portions B and 21 of the eye member A and stud member E are provided c'oncentrically arranged apertures andl, respectively, wherethrough thread may be passed to secure said members to the parts of the garments to be removably fastened together by my invention.
In Figs. 7 and 8 I indicate a slight modiication of my invention. In this instance I dispense with the tongues B and B and iix in place between the curled margin 10 of the disk A, a circular, thin, sheet metallic plate M. This plate M performs the same unctions as the tongue B and is possessed of the same depressions D and D and the bridge wall D as are provided in the tongue B.
I have hereinbefore disclosed the preferred mode of practising my invention, but I reserve theright to make such Aand any lchanges as might occur to one skilled in the art to which this invention appertains, or
Y to make anyand all such alterations as may Copies of this patent may be obtained for be permitted under the doctrine of equivalents.
I-Iaving thus fully described my invention v I claim as new, and desire to secure to myself Vby Letters Patent of the United States 1. An eye-member for a garment or similar fastener, comprising a circular disk, said disk having its marginal edges underturned, there being in 'said disk an annular, raised, flat, portion, there being in said flat portion a slot, said slot terminating in an enlarged opening, and a member underneath said circular disk, said member having a depression in its face directly below said enlarged opening, and a further depression adjacent to the iirst-named depression, directly below said slot, there being a bridge-wall between the two depressions, said member being resilient.
2. An article of the class described comprising a disk like member having a slot terminating in an enlarged opening, and a tongue integrally Jformed with said member, bent back under said member, and having the free end of said tongue supported by said member, said tongue having a depression in its upper face directly below said enlarged opening and another depression in its upper face directly under said slot, and a bridge wall between said depressions.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have hereunto set my hand.
