To all whom it may concern lBe it known that I, LAWRENCE W. Swen, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Liberty, in the county of Muscatine and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in I'Iydrocarhon-Burners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to heaters used by goldsmiths, jewelers and others for soldering, brazing, melting small quantities of the precious metals, and the. like, and the object of the invention is to produce a heater which supplies its own intensifying blast, and requires no air-compression or blast from any other source.
The invention is fully disclosed in the description and claims following, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a burner embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a view of the under side of the upper reservoir.
In the drawing, 1 designates a lamp adapted for the burning of a liquid hydrocarbon, preferably alcohol. This is provided with two burner tubes, 2 and 3, the former being the service burner. The other, located at same distance therefrom, is provided with a sleeve 4, which is connected with a small lever 5 pivoted at 6. By this means the amount of flame from burner 3 may be regulated, from a full flame, as shown, to a very small flame by elevating the sleeve. Attached to one side of the lamp is a bracket 7, and to this is hinged a standard 8, which at its upper end connects with a spring clip or fork 9 adapted to hold, in any desired position, a reservoir 10. This is provided with a suitable filling neck 11, which should be hermetically stopped by a cap 12. Entering the top of the reservoir is a tube 13, which descends outside to the bottom, and forms a circle or coil thereunder, as shown in Fig. 2, terminating in an outwardly extended nozzle 14.
The operation of the burner is illustrated in Fig. 1, and described as follows:
Alcohol is supplied to the lower lamp through its filling-hole 15, In the same manner the upper reservoir is partially filled with the same material, preferably about two-thirds full. Both burnersof the lamp are lighted. In a minute or two the heat of the burner 3 generates gas in the upper chamber, which escapes from the nozzle 14 with more'or less force according to the heat and pressure. When set in proper position this escaping gas, ignited, is forced across and commingles with the main flame of the burner 2, producing the intense heat of a blow-torch. In practice the upper chamber is so placed that the flame from 2 plays directly on the gas-tube, and so superheats the escaping gas. This may be tempered to any desired degree of intensity by adjusting the sleeve 4. When the lamp is no longer needed it is only necessary to extinguish both flames, either by capping, or by first blowing out the flame at 3, and in a few moments that at 2, When the flow of gas has ceased.
The burner as so devised is extremely simple and convenient to operate, and is very eflicient in practice, a burner of about the size of the drawing herein having capacity to melt 15 dwt. of gold in one and one half minutes. In soft and hard soldering operations also, it is equally convenient and satisfactory.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a burner for liquid hydrocarbons, the combination of a lamp font provided with a service flame nozzle, a reservoir to hold liquid and the gas generated by heat therein, a gas-tube leading from the upper portion of the reservoir to its bottom, and forming a coil thereunder, with a laterally extending outlet, and means connecting with the lamp font for heating. said second vessel and its gas-tube.
2. In a burner for liquid hydro-carbons, the combination of a lamp font provided with two flame nozzles, a standard adjustably attached to said font, a reservoir having a gas-tube outlet to supply blast to one of the lamp flames, and a support for said reservoir adjustably connecting with the standard, and mounted over one of the lamp flames.
3. In a burner for liquid hydro-carbons,
the combination of a lamp font provided With two flame nozzles, a standard hinged to said font, a reservoir having a gas outlet to supply blast to one of the lamp flames, a compression clip therefor hinged to the standard, the reservoir beingmounted over one of the lamp flames, and means for regulating said reservoir-heating flame.
