Description
ISAAC N. HOYT.-
Improvement in Wagon Bodies and Rack.
Patented'Dec. 5, 1871* \u. is s K UNITED STATES ISAAC N. HOYT, OF WAYLAND, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN WAGON-BODIES AND RACKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,623, dated December 5, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC N. HOYT, of Wayland, in the county of Allegan and State of Michigan, h ave invented a new and useful Improvement in Wagon-Box and Rack; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon and being a part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 shows my invention in perspective, with the rack upon one side of the box vertical and the rack upon the opposite side at an incline, as when in use as a hay-rack. Fig. 2 is a perspective from the bottom of one of the cross-ties of the rack. Fig. 3 is a plan of the top of the same. Fig. 4 is a plan of one of the wings of the rack.
Like letters indicate like parts in each figure.
This invention is designed to be an improvement upon that class of farming implements called hay-racks, so arranged as to be light and convenientforhandling, that it will be economical to construct, and easily adjusted. The invention consists in the manner of constructing and arranging the various parts, as more fully hereafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents a wagon-box of the usual construction, provided with straps of band-iron a so arranged as to form small flat loops on the top edge of the box. B are the cross-ties of the rack, provided with small lugs 70 of bandiron, which are designed to engage with the flat loops on the edges of the box and hold the cross-ties in place. Near the ends of these cross-ties there are vertical openings D through them to receive the rails of the rack and hold the same in a vertical position. When in this position the rails of the rack project through and below the cross-ties into pockets 1), preferably made of band-iron and secured to the sides of the box. These openings'are so arranged in the crossties that the wings of the rack may be detached from the pockets by pulling them up, when they may be inclined outwardly for use as a hay-rack. The openings, for this purpose, in said cross-ties have an inward and downward inclination, and may be provided with any suitable stop to prevent the wings of the rack from being thrown out of place. (J are the wings of the rack, made of the rails d. and bars 71, the rails projecting below the bars a suflicient distance to engage with the openings through the cross-ties, as above described.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the cross-ties B provided with lu gs k and the movable straps a, all constructed substantially as described and shown, for the purpose of fastening a rack to a wagon-box, as set forth.
2. The combination of the cross-ties B, provided with openings D and the pockets 1), all constructed substantially as described and shown, for the purpose of securing the wings O of a hay-rack to a wagon-box in either a vertical or an inclined plane, as set forth.
ISAAC N. HOYT.
