To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OHAnLns Osnonx, a citizen of the United States, residing at Everett, in the county of Snohomish, State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Fliers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates generally to toys, and particularly to that class of toys wherein a flier member is rapidly rotated and pro-. 'ected from a suitable rotary member to whirl the flier through the air; the invention aiming primarily to provide an improved means for retaining the flier upon the rotary member and for releasing the same when the latter has received the desired speed of rotation.
A further object of the inventionis to provide means upon the rotary member for holding the flier member thereon during the whirling movement of the said member, and whereby the said means will automatically release the said flier when the said rotary member has attained a predetermined speed of rotation.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a flier fora toy of this character whichv is of simple and improved construction.
A. still further and particular object of the invention is to provide a toy of the character described which is of extremely simple and inexpensive construction, which is composed of but few readily assembled parts, all so constructed and arranged as to preclude breakage, derangement or wear of the same, which is simple of operation, and which will prove thoroughly eflicient in the attainment of the ends for which it is designed.
With these objects in view, together with others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts, all as will be described more fully hereinafter, illustrated in the drawings and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The-invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, 5 indicates a stock or handle portion, the same being of such size and shape as to enable the same to be firmly gripped by the hand. This stock is provided at one end with a flat table portion, from the "center of which projects a spindle 6, the latter being rigidly connected to the said stock. Mounted for rotation upon the spindle 6 is a rotary member 7. This member is preferably in the shape of a cylindrical block, the same being provided With a longitudinal and centrally disposed opening through which the spindle 6 projects, the latter being enlarged adjacent its outermost end to provide a shoulder 8 to engage with the outer face of the rotary member to. retain the latter upon the said spindle. Spring flier engaging arms 9 are secured at opposite points in the periphery of the rotary member, the said arms being secured at their innermost ends by a band 10, the said band passing around the said rotary member at the inner end thereof. The spring arms are bent outwardly to provide feet 11 at their inner extremities, the said feet assisting to retain the said spring arms firmly beneath the band 10. The free ends of the spring arms are inturned and provide fingers 12, the same being adapted to extend inwardly from the peripheral edges of the rotary member when the spring arms are moved inwardly, the said fingers being spaced slightly from the outer end of the rotary member. The spring arms 9 normally extend outwardly from the rotary member so that the fingers 12 are beyond the peripheral edges of the said block. A bushing or washer 13 may encircle the spindle 6 to space the innermost end of the rotary member from the table portion of the stock 5.
The flier used in connection with the above described impelling means comprises a central portion 14, provided with a central aperture 15 of a size sufficient to enable the same to loosely engage over the enlarged outer end of the spindle 6. This flier may be formed of thin 1i ht metal, the wings or fingers 1.6 of the sai flier extending in op posite directions from the central portion position, a cord or strin 17 may be wound around the rotary mem er 7, the winding metal and then bent to the 14 thereof. The lateral edges of the central portion 14 of the flier are parallel, and the'said central portion is of such width as to enable the same to lie upon the outer end of the rotary block 7 with its parallel edges substantially even with the peripheral ed es of the said rotary member. When in t is beginning at the outer end thereof and passing over the spring arms 9 to draw the latter inwardly to lie fiat against the peripheral faces of the block 7 with the fingers 12 engaged over the edges of the central portion 14 of the flier. It is thus seen that the flier is firmly held u on the rotary member, and a sufficient num er of turns .or windings of the cord upon the rotary member may be made to impart to the said member a rapid rotary movement when the said cord is vio-' lently pulled therefrom. As the cord unwinds from the rotary member, the latter is rapidly rotated, and after the end coils of the cord have been removed from the rotary member the arms .9 will spring. outwardly and release the flier member from engagement by the fingers 12. The inclinedvanes 16 on the flier will, by its rapid rotation, cause the said flier to be projected or rise from the spindle 6 upon the stock.
The flier used in the present instance may be bent angularly as at 18 at the juncture of the fingers with the central portion 14, whereupon the desired lateral inclination of the fingers will be made. It is thus seen that the flier members may be easily and cheaply constructed, being stamped of thin desired inclination as above referred toZ While I have herein shown and described a particular or preferred embodiment of the invention, I wish it to be understood that I need not confine myself to all the precise details of construction herein set forth by way of -i1-1H3I&t10l1,- as modification and variation may be made without departin from the spirit of the invention or excee ing the scope of the claims.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination with a rotary member and a flier therefor, of spring fingers carried by said rotar member to engage said flier, and a cord adapted to be wound upon said rotary member to hold said fingers engaged with said flier and to be operated to rotate said member, substantially asde'scribed.
2. The combination with a rotary member and a flier therefor, of arms carried by said rotary member and springing normally outwardly therefrom, fingers on the ends of said arms adapted to engage with the edges of said flier, and a cord adapted to be wound upon said rotary member to hold said arms with their fingers engaging'said flier and to be operated to rotate saidrotary member, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the class described, the
combination with a flier having an aper-' tured central portion with inclined vanes projecting therefrom, of a stock, a spindle on said stock, a rotary member on said spin- (11B. of the same diameter as the width of said central portion, the said central portion being adapted to rest upon said rotary member, spring arms secured at their inner ends to said rotary member at opposite vpoints in the periphery thereof, the saidarms springing normally outwardly from said member, inturned fingers on the ends of said arms adapted to engage over the edges of said central portion, and a cord for engagement around said rotary member to force said fingers over said central portion and to operate said rotary member, substantially as described.
