. citizen ,of the United States, residing at' Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle; Cappers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machines or apparatus for placing paper caps in the mouths of milk bottles. The invention is an attachment for such machines, and it is designed to apply a supplementary closure in the form of a sheet of paper or other flexible material, which is inserted with the cap, into the mouth of the bottle.
' It is the object of the present invention to provide an attachment for the purpose stated which can be applied to any ordinary bottle capper having a reciprocatory plunger for applying the caps, and a reciprocatory slide which feeds the caps.
The object stated is attained by means of a novel combination and arrangement of descrlbed and parts to be hereinafter claimed, and in order that the same may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1' isa side elevation of the machine showing the application of the invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional detail of the feeding mechanism; I Fig. 3-is a horizontalsection on the line 3-3 of Fig. .2; i

Serial No. 55,648 i i The parts thus far described are old and well known and a further description is deemed unnecessary. A type of machine to which the invention is applicable is disclosed in Patent No.-1040453, dated October 8,1912.
As already stated, the invention is designed to. cap the bottle, and at the same time to apply a supplementary closure, such as is shown iii my Patent N0..1,162,781, dated December 7, 1915. This supplementary closure is a sheet of paper or other thin flexible material which is on the bot tom of the cap and seats with the latter in the bottle neck as shown in the previous application referred to. The sheets are severed from .a strip 18 and fed. at the proper time beneath the caps 15 as the latter come into position to be forced into the mouth of the bottles, the following mechanism being provided for this purpose:
The under side of the base 10 has a mouth piece 19 to inclose the top of the bottle 17 as it is being capped. The inner surface of the mouth piece is grooved as indicated at 20, forming a seat for the edges of the strip 18, thelatter entering the mouth piece 1 through a slit 21 in the wall thereof. The bottle being beneath the strip 18 in the 85 month piece, and said strip being beneath the cap 15 forced down by the plunger 12,
' siderably larger and having a roughened periphery to give a better feed. The feed rollers are supported by depending bracket arms 24 on a rearward extension 25 of the base .10, said extension also forming a support for the slide 16, and the latter having lnturned retaining flanges'26 engaglng the bottom of the extension. The extension 25 has a longitudinalslot 27, and the bracket ratchetwheel 32 fasten the shaft 33 of the" 11 feed roller 22, to rotate said feed roller,- whereby a section'of the strip 18 is fed forp ward into the mouth piece 19 on the forward or feed stroke of the slide 16. The feed roller remains stationary on the return stroke of the slide, as the ratchet bar then 5 slips over the ratchet wheel. When the plunger 12 descends and caps the bottle the slide is making its return stroke, and when the plunger ascends, the slide is advanced and pushes the next cap into position, and 1 atthe same time the strip 18 is also fed forward to obtain the next sheet to be inserted into the bottle mouth with the cap. The sheet is torn off the strip by the cap as the latter is forced'into the bottle mouth I by the plunger, and in order to insure this operation, the strip has transverse perforations. 34 defining the lines of division between the sheets to be severed from the strip.
Fig. 4 shows a modified feed device, a piv- 2o gted dog 35 being substituted for the ratchet Fig. 5 shows another modification. Here, the slide 16 has tWo depending arms 36 at its sides which support a horizontal, transverse shaft 37. On this shaft is springhinged or pivoted a bail-shaped pusher 38,
the cross bar of which has fine teeth and bears .against the under side of the strip 18 and presses it against the under side of the base extension 25. When the slide is making its feed stroke, the pusher is also advanced to feed the strip, and on the return stroke, the pusher slides idly back over the strip.
Referring specifically to Figs. 6 to 8 of the drawings, the same illustrating anothermodification, 39 denotes the base of the machine beneath which is mounted the base plate 40 of the attachment, the same having 40 an aperture 41 across which the strip 18 is fed, said aperture being in line with the plunger 12- and receiving the top of the bottle to be capped. The plate 40 is secured to the plate'39 in spaced relation, by bolts 42 and spacing sleeves 43. The slide 16 for feeding the caps 17 is mounted on the plate 39 and has the retaining flanges 26 as hereinbefore described.
On top of the slide 16 is mounteda yoke 44 through which passes a cross rod 45 extending transversely of the slide. To this rod is connected one of the links 46 of a toggle, The toggle link 47 is connected to the plunger stem 13. By this toggle mechanism, and through the rod and the yoke, the slide is reciprocated when the plunger 12 is operated.

Between the bracket arms 48 is carried, by pivot pins 49, a yoke composed of a cross bar 54 and branches 55, the latter being fastened to the pivot 'pins 49. The yoke branches also carry a transverse plate 56, set vertically and having a toothed bottom edge 57 The cross bar 54, and the plate 56 are'on opposite sides of the pivot of the yoke, and-against the forward face of the plate 56 is mounteda plate 58 of the same contour, and also provided with bottom teeth 59. The teeth 57 and 59 register with the slits 52. The plate 58 has rearwardly extending lateral end flanges or arms 60 which are pivoted, by pins 61, to the ends of the plate 56, whereby the plates 56 and 58 are pivotally connected, so that the two rows of teeth may be brought together or separated.
In the path of the arms 60 are cams 62, which latter, when the flanges ride along the same, tilt the plate 58 and swing'the same away from the plate 56 to separate the teeth 57 and 59.
It will be noted that there is enough room in the yoke 44 to permit some slight play of the cross rod 45 forward and rearward, in view of which the slide 16 will not start to move the instant thecross rod is drawn forward or rearward bythe toggle links 46 and 47, and the slide does not com mence to move until the rod strikes the side of the yoke. This slight play of the rod in g the yoke swings the levers 50 and through rocks the yoke carrying the plates 56 and 58. On the forward or feed plates 56 and 58 is rocked ina direction to lower said plates so that their teeth 57 and 59 enter the slits 52 and one of the rows of perforations 53, the strip 18 being positioned y hand when the machine is started to properlylocate the first row of perforations. As the slide moves forward, the plates 56 and 58 push the strip forward the required distance to properly position the forward end across the aperture 41, after which-the plunger 12 descends and severs the sheet to be afiixed with the cap as hereinbefore described. The parts will be so designed that the strip is fed forward a distance corresponding to the length of the 120 sheet to be severed. Just before the end of the feed stroke, the arms 60 strike the cams 62, whereupon the plate 58 swings away from the plate 56 and the teeth 57 and 59 separate and sever thesheet from the strip, pushing the sheet ahead slightly to make sure of its separationfrom the strip. On the return stroke of the parts, the cross rod 45 swings the levers 50 in a direction to tilt the yoke carrying the push plates 56 and 58 9 stroke. This holding device comprisesthe while the sheet is being severed. When this device is used the tear-off plate 58 may be dispensed with, the sheet being torn off by the plunger 12 when it makes its working following parts:
To a suitable support 63 on the plate 40 is fulcrumed, as indicated at 64, an angle lever, the two branches ofwhich are engaged at 65 and 66, respectively. The branch 66 of the angle lever is in the path of a pin or abutment 67on the toggle link 46. The support 63 also carries a presser device in the form of a lever having at one end a presser foot 68, and at the other end a weight 69. That part of the lever provided with the lever foot 68 carries a flat spring 70 on top engageable by. the branch 65 of the angle lever. The presser foot 68 is located so that it may pass through one of the slits 52 and engage the strip 18 just back of the line where-the sheet is torn ofi. Two of the herein described presser devices may be pro vided, one on eachside of the machine, the drawings, however, showing one only.
In operation, assuming that the toggle links 46 and 47 are in their forward posi- .tion, asshown in full lines, and that they have made a part of the return stroke, as
shown dotted,- the point where the abutment 67 strikes the angle lever branch 66 indicates that the capping plunger is about to descend on the cap and sever the sheet. As the parts 46 and l7 return, the angle lever is rocked to press the branch 65 down on the spring 70, thereby pressing the foot 68 down against the strip 18 with a resilient action, so that it is not pulled out when the plunger descends. On further motion of the part -16, the lever branch 66 slips offthe abutment 67 and on the forward stroke the presser device is not afi'ected- I claim 1. In a bottle capping machine, a feed slide for the caps, a reciprocatory plunger for applying the caps, and means operatively connected to the feed slide for feeding a supplementary closure simultaneously with the caps and beneath the same.

In a bottle capping machine, a feed slide for the caps, a reciprocatory plunger for applying the caps, and means operatively connected to the feed slide for feeding a supplementary closure simultaneously with the caps and beneath the same, said closure being forced into the bottle mouth with the caps.
3. In a bottle capping machine, a feed slide for the caps, a reciprocatory plunger operative connection between the feed slide and the supplementary feed device.

In a bottle capping machine, a feed slide for the caps, areciprocatory plunger for applying the caps, and means for feeding a supplementary closure strip to bring a section thereof beneath the cap to be applied, said section being applied loy the plungerwith the cap, said feeding means being actuated by the feed slide.

In a bottle capping machine, a feed slide for the caps, a reciprocatory plunger for applying the caps, and means for feedaforesaid strip having perforations defining the lines of division between the sections, a pivoted plate carried by the fpush plate and seating thereagainst on the eed stroke, said pivoted plate also having teeth, which teeth and the teeth of the push plate are adapted to enter the perforations of the strip, a pivoted su port for the push plate carried by the fee slide, means for swinging the support to elevate the aforesaid plates on the return stroke, and means for swinging the pivoted plate outward from the push plate at the end of the feed stroke to sever a section from the strip.
7. In a bottle capping machine, a feed slide for the caps, a reciprocatory plunger for applying the caps, and means for feeding a supplementary closure strip to bring a section thereof beneath the cap to be applied, said section being a pliedby the plunger with the cap, said eeding means comprising a push plate, a pivoted support for the push plate carried by the feed slide, and means for swinging the support to lower and elevate the push plate on the feed and return strokes respectively.
8. In a bottle capping machine, a feed slide for the caps, a reciprocatory plunger for applying the caps, and means for feed- A ger with the cap, said feeding means comprising a push plate having teeth, and the aforesaid strip having perforations defining the lines of division between the sections, a pivoted plate carried by the push plate and seating thereagainst on the feed stroke, said pivoted plate also having teeth, which teeth and the teeth of the push plate are adapted to enter the perforations of the strip, a pivoted support for the push plate carried by the feed slide, means for swinging the support to lower and elevate the aforesaid plates on the feed and return strokes respectively, and means for swinging the pivoted plate outward from the push plate at "the end of the feed stroke to sever a section from the strip.

In a bottle capping machine, a feed slide for the caps, a reciprocatory plunger for applying the caps, and means for feeding a supplementary closure strip to bring a section thereof beneath the cap to be applied, said section being applied by the plunger with the cap, said feeding means comprising a push plate having teeth, and
the aforesaid strip having perforations defining the lines of division between the sections, a pivoted plate carried by the push plate and seating thereagainst on the feed stroke, said pivoted plate also having teeth, which teeth and the teeth of the push plate are adapted to enter the perforations of the strip, a pivoted support for the push plate carried by the feed slide, means for swinging the support to elevate the aforesaid plates on the return stroke, a projecting arm on the pivoted plate, and a cam in the path of said arm for swinging said plate outward from the push plate at the end of the feed stroke to sever a section frOm' the strip.
