BOTTLE-LABELING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 771,940, dated October 11, 1904. Application filed January 16, 1903. Serial No, 139,323. (No model.)
To all wh0m, it may concern: Be it known that 1, JOHN FRED SCHNEIDER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Labeling Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to bottling machinery; and it consists of the hereinafter-described construction of parts and ofthe hereinafterstated combinations of some parts into an automatic labeling-machine, resulting in the production of a simple eflicient machine which can be operated by hand or foot power or power from a transmission.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a machine embodying myinvention, its parts being shown in position immediately after the labeling operation is completed and at thebeginning ofthe operation of gumming the pickers.- Fig. 2 is a side elevation, and 3 a sectional view, some parts being shown in elevation, on line 3 3 indicated in Fig. 1, showing the parts of the machine in the same position Fig. 4 is a front elevation, like Fig. 1, of the upper part of the machine, showing the parts in position at the beginningof the labeling operation immediately label being gummed and picked up. Fig. 5 is a similar view, like Fig. 4, showing, however, the parts in the act of affixing the label to the bottle. The frame of the machine consists of a stationary part or main frame and of a movable part or movable frame. w
The stationary part or main frame is com- .posed of uprights A, bound together by ties a a and by tie-plates 6' and c, and of guiderods (Z, secured to uprights A by brackets, (designated by the numeral 1.) The movable frame is composed of sleeves 7v, slid on rodsd, and of tie-plates h and 2'. Tie-plate 2' is slotted, as shown in Fig. 1, and in the slot engages roller 120, loosely revolving on crankpin 121 andheld thereon by screw 105. Crankpin 121 is secured in crank-disk K, set on the forward end of the main driving-shaft l3, and

The labels to be afliXed to the bottles are piled face downward on table 8 and held there in position by flanges 11, 12, 18, and 14. Flange 12 is hinged to the front side of platform 6 by rod 15, mounted in lugs 16, and is stationary, whereas the other flanges (11, 13, and 14) are adjustable to permit labels of different sizes and shapes to be used in the machine. Flange 12 is pressed by spring 17, held in position by screw 18 (which also secures the flange 12 torod 15) against the squared ends of lugs 16. Flanges l1 and 12 are provided with inwardly-bent prongs, as shown at 19 in Fig. 3, overlapping the edges of the labels.
During the operation of the machine table 8 is gradually lifted by the mechanism, constructed as follows: Table 8 is provided with a stem 9 and by means of this stem entering the recess of screw-threaded shaft 3 is set upon this shaft. This shaft is snugly fitted in boss 4, which is a part of platform 5, and in the bore of bracket 5, secured to the same platform. Ratchet-wheel 6, provided with a corresponding screw-thread in its central bore, is set on this shaft 3, resting on spring7, which holds it snugly against boss 4. Rod 20, longitudinally movable in lug 22 and pivoted to rocking arm 21, carries on its forward end a pawl engaging with the ratchet-wheel 6. This pawl turns the ratchet-wheel 6 the length of one tooth at every reciprocation of the arm 21. By this mechanism table 8 is pressed upward a proportionate distance as the quantity of the labels piled thereon is decreased by the operations of the machine. Thus the pile of labels is always kept in astate of compression between table 8 and the prongs of flanges 11 and 12, which are stationary, being affixed in adjusted position to platform 6 by set-screws passing through the slotted tails of these flanges into bores provided in platform I), which is permanently secured to uprights A of the stationary frame. The pressing downward of the opposite edges of the labels causes the central portion of the labels to slightly bulge, whereby the gumming and picking-up operation of the labels is facilitated.
Above the platform Z) is located the frame for holding the bottle during the process of applying the label thereto. This frame consists of rods 27, set in lugs 29, affixed to uprights Aof the stationary frame, posts 25, set in heads 26 of rods 27, and of rod 24, set in the heads of posts 25. Rods 27 are longitudinally movable in bearings 29. They are adjusted in desired position by screw-threaded wheels 30 and secured in adjusted position by lock-nuts 31. Posts 25 are also longitudinally movable in heads 26 and are secured in desired position by set-screws 28. These adjustments are provided to enable bottles of different dimensions to be operated upon in the machine. On rod 24 a bolster 23, preferably made of soft rubber, is aflixed. This bolster 23 is concaved to better accommodate a bottle and hold it firmly in position against lateral displacement. The bottom of the bottle is supported in plate 41, having a circular flange 42. This plate is adjustabl y secured to bracket 37 by screw 40, passed through slot 39 of the bracket into a screw-threaded bore of plate 41. Bracket 37 is held to tie-plate 0 by angle-irons 38. This bracket is longitudinally movable relatively to the plate 0, the angle-irons 38 serving as guides for it. The part of bracket 37 adjoining plate 0 is bifurcated, and bellcranklever 48 is fulcrumed between the prongs of the bifurcated part on pin 46, mounted in bearings 47. The vertically-depending arm of this bell-crank lever 48 is hinged to sleeve 44, wherein pin 43, secured in bracket 37, engages and is rigidly connected therewith when adjusted by screw 45. The horizontally-dis posed arm of lever 48 is hinged by pin 50 to. rod 51, connecting it with the clutch mechanism, to be described later on.
The bottle resting in the frame in the position shown in Fig. 3 is held against the bolster 23, and the flanged plate 41 by pad 2, adjustably secured by means of its stem 59 in the head of lever 60. This lever is fulcrumed on pin 61, pillowed in downwardlyprojecting plugs of tie-plate c, as shown in Fig. 1, and is actuated by mechanism mounted on the main driving-shaft'B, to which it is connected by rod 63, hinged to the rear end of this lever. This rod is composed of two parts joined by extensible swivel-coupling f to permit adjustment of the motion of the lever. The motions of this mechanism are arranged to press the pad 2 upon the bottle during the period of aifixing the label thereto and to withdraw it again when the operations are completed to permit the removing of the labeled bottle from the machine.
The paste required to secure the labels to the bottle is'applied to each label by bars 86 (see Fig. 1 and Fig. 3) when those bars are brought in their lowest position then resting upon the label. These bars 86 and levers 106, to which these bars are secured, (or made integral therewith,) serve also as pickers for lifting up the labels from the pile. Levers 106 are fulcrumed on pins 107, set in plate h of the movable frame. Spring 108, held in the slotted head of screw-bolt 109, which is secured in the apex of plate h, acts by its ends against the short arms of levers 106, pressing them against stop-pins 110, and thus holds levers 106 in such position that bars 86 rest upon the topmost label of the pile some distance inwardly from the edges thereof when the movable frame is brought into its lowermost position.
Bars 86 receive a fresh supply of paste every time the movable frame reaches its uppermost position, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The supply of paste is kept in trough 83, set on plate 0. In this trough shaft 87 is set in suitable bearings 88 and is driven by rope 89, passing over the grooved pulley 90, set on the end of shaft87, and pulley 91, set on shaft 92. The latter shaft is mounted in bearings 98, secured to uprights A, and is driven by rope 93, passing over pulley 94, set on this shaft, and pulley 95, set on the main driving-shaft B. Pulley 94 is integral with clutch-collar 135, set to loosely revolve on shaft 92. The other clutch-collar 136 is splined with shaft 92 and longitudinally movable thereon. Lever 131, operating also the clutch on the main driving-shaft B, and which is pivoted to the main frame at 134, embraces clutch-collar 136, and pins Z, set in the lever, (see Fig. 1,) engage in a groove provided in the collar. The adjoining ends of collars 135 and 136 are serrated and fitted to clutch together. By shifting lever 131 collar 136 is moved on shaft 92 to close or disengage the clutch. Two rolls 84 are set on shaft 87 to revolve in the pastetrough 83. Scrapers 96, mounted on rod 97, bear yieldingly against rolls 84 and regulate the supply of paste to be supplied to rol-ls 85, transmitting the paste from rolls 84 to bars 86. Rolls are mounted on the ends of rod 99, supported in clamp 100, which again is secured to push-bar 101 by set-screw 102; Push-bar 101 is hinged to rocking arm 21, secured to rocking shaft 32. By the rocking motions of the shaft 32 rolls 85 are thus reciprocated along the bars 86.
The motions of rolls 85 are guided by the segmental rail 104, which is embraced by prongs 103 of the clamp 100. The motions of rolls 85 are so timed that during part of the ascending motion of the movable frame they are brought forward and beyond the forward ends of bars 86, which are thus permitted to pass above the rolls 85; but immediately after the bars 86 have reached the level of the upper surface of rolls 85 and come to a standstill rolls 85 aredrawn rearwardly along the bars and in contact therewith, thus depositing in Fig. 5 and 711's nd 11.9,
the paste thereon. Rolls 85 then come to a standstill beyond the rear ends of bars 86, thus enabling the movable frame to descend again. 1
When the label to be affixed to the bottle is picked up by bars 86 and lifted from the pile and before it is brought in contact with the bottle, wipers 113, secured to levers 12 between plates 114 and 115, move from the position shown in Fig. 4 into the position shown press the label upon the bottle, stretching it simultaneously from center toward the edge and aflixing it thereto.
Levers 112 are fulcrumed to plate It by screw-bolts 111, and their rear arms are pivotally connected by rods 117 to levers'118 and 119, hinged to plate a of the movable frame by pins 128 and, 129, respectively. Levers 118 and-119 are also fulcrumed to each other and to lug' 126 bypin 125, whereby one lever (119) is actuated by the motions of the other (118) lever. Spring 123, 'adjustablysecured in lug 1 26 by set-screw 127, acts with its ends on pivots 124, connecting rods 117 with levers I respectively. The function of this spring 123 is to produce a yielding tension upon wipers 113 through arms 112 during the period of afiixing the label to the bottle, Rods 117 are adjustable lengthwise by swivel-joints 133, whereby 'the tension of during the affixing.

In the lower edge of lever 118 recess 122 is provided to permit the lever to drop below the upper edge of slotc" when roller 120 is at or near the left-hand end of this slot, then the recessed portion of lever 118 restsagainst roller 120, andas this roller moves in the slot 2' from left to right it comes in contact with straight portion of its lower edge, whereby lev'e'rl118 is forced upwardly and held in this position until roller 120 comes again at the end of the downward motion of the movable framein contact with the recessed portion, whereupon lever 118is brought again in its normal lowermost position by the action of spring 123. By this action of 112 are moved together, and wipers 113 are brought nearer together underneath the bottle to hold and press the label against it. The upward motion of rods 117 is not restrained, except that spring 123e'xertsa tension thereon, as above explained, and therefore wipers 113 are enabled-to yield outwardly as they pass along the circumference of the bottle. Being, however, constantly pressed together and against the bottle, they stretch the label smoothly upon the bottle. When by the upward motion of the movable frame arms 112 and wipers 113 are brought to the level of rollers 85, they are drawn apart by the action of roller 120, passing to the straight part of the lower edge of lever 118 and lifting it to enable wipers 113 to pass clear of the ends of rollers 85,'as shown in-Fig. 1. Arms 112 andlever 1'18and spring 123 arms wipers 113 are then held in this position (apart from each other) during the operation of rollers 85 supplying bars 86 with paste during the entire downward motion of the movable frame and during the first part of its upward motion until after bars 86 have picked up and lifted the next label, as described above.
The machine is also provided with a device for stamping upon each label before the same is affixed to the bottle the date or some other mark or designation, as may be required. The stamping device (visible in Fig. 3) consists of rod 71, hingedv to rocking arm 21, a printing-die 72, affixed on the end of this rod, bracket 74, secured to platform-b, inking-pad 81', set thereon, connecting-rod 73, and the actuating mechanism mounted on the main shaft. Rod 71 is slid through a bore in 'the head "of rod 73 and is longitudinally movabletherein. It is reciprocated by the motionsof rocking arm 21, so that the printing-die 72 is brought alternately in printing position (shown inFig. 3) above the label and then again above the inking-pad 81, which is the inking position. The farther-on-described mechanism wherewith rod 71 is connectedby the rod 73 effects the depressing and raising motions whereby the printing-die is brought in contact with the label to be printed on and again in contact with'the inking-pad. The mechanism reciprocating themovable frame has been already explained, and also the mechanism ac' tuating pickers 86 and wipers 113. All these parts receive their motions from the crankdisk "K by means of roller 120, slotted plate 2 and levers 118 and119, as hereinbefore explained. i
Rocking arm 21, actuating the label-feeding mechanism by reciprocating rod 20, the printing mechanism by reciprocating rod 71, and the gumming or paste-supplying mechanism by reciprocating rod 101, is actuated by cam G, set on the driving-shaft B. Arm 21 is rigidly secured to rocking shaft 32 by set-screw 33. To the same rocking shaft is rigidly secured arm 34 by set-screw 35. On the other end of arm 34 a roller 36 is set to loosely revolve on a pin set in the arm 34. This roller engages in groove F of cam G, shaped to produce a to-and-fro motion of the arm 34, whereby shaft 32 and arm 21, secured thereto, are rocked. Lever 60, operating pad 2 for holding the bottle firmly in position dur ing the process of applying the label, is also actuated from the main driving-shaftB through rod 63 by the following mechanism. I Rod 63 is connected by forked plate 64 to spring 65, having the other end thereof attached by pin 66 to bar 67, set in the main frame. In this plate 64 is secured pin 68, and roller 69 is set to freely revolve thereon. Roller69 is situated to'raise pad 2 from the bottle.

The mechanism actuating the printing device is constructed like the mechanism actuatinglthe bottle-holding pad. Forked plate 7 5-connects rod 7 3 withspring 76, whose other end is fastened to pin 77 secured in the same rod'67. Roller 7 9', set on pin 78,-secured in the plate 75, engages with cam I. This cam isa substantial-ly circular cam provided with two concave recesses80. (See Fig: 3 of the drawings.) The location of these recesses on the'camis such'thatone of them comes in contactwith roller 79-right after rocking arm 21 moves the printing die 72 in the position shown in Fig. 3 (Fig.- 3 shows the position of theparts immediately-after the concave depression passedout of contact with roller 79 an'dwhile the'printing-die 72, though again lifted'fromthelabel whereontheimprint was made, is still in'position-above-the label) and the other when the rocking arm 21 withdraws the printing die 72 and brings itin position opposite the inking-pad 81. These recesses permit spring? 6 to draw rod 7 3 downwardly, and thereby to press the-printing=die 72 upon the'label to print or upon the inking-pad to ink the die. In the arrangement shown in the drawings the printing or marking is pro-v duced on thereverse side of the labels. The same mechanism is, however, capable of printin'g the date or mark on the face of the label. This-is accomplished by reversing the printing-die 7 2, placing the inking-pad on the bottom of flange 12, and by setting upon the main shaft B, actuating the rod 73,- in place of cam I'one provided with protuberances where recesses of cam-I are located.
When themachine is driven by power, a
.belt is drawn over pulley G, set to loosely revolve on shaft B, coupled with the shaft by meansof a clutch, composed of toothed wheel E made integralwith pulley G or rigidly connected' therewith, collar c rigidly secured to the shaft adjoining the toothed wheel E, and leverefulcrumed to it at m. In the end of the longer arm of lever a wedge u is secured, projecting therefrom toward the toothed wheel E. This wedge u is shaped to lit in the recesses 0 between the teeth of the wheel E, and the end of levere wherein this wedge 10 is secured is pressed against the wheel E byspring q, secured to the lever by screw 57 and set against a shoulder provided in collar '0. The other arm 8 of lever e is bent toward the shaft. Its end is rounded eled end of clutch-lever 6.
so that collar j, which is longitudinally mov able on shaft B may be slid underneath, whereby arm sismoved farther away from shaft B and wedge 10 withdrawn from engagement with wheel E, thus disengaging the clutch. Collar is operated by lever 131, fulcrumed on pivot 25, (shown in Fig. 1,) set in socket 13 1, secured to the main frame. The lower arm of lever 131 is forked, and in the prongs thereof pins 'w areset, engaging in a groove of collar The upper arm of lever- 131 is formed into a handle whereby this clutch is operated to start or stop the machine.
This clutch when in engagement with the wheel E is automatically disengaged at every revolution of shaft B by hook 53, set on shaft 54 and pressed by spring 55 in such position that bevel edge n of lever e comes in contact with the correspondingly-beveled edge of the point 56 of this hook53 its point When this end reaches hook 53, it slides beyond its point, and thereby lever e is drawn away from wheel E and wedge u is withdrawn from its engagement with the teeth thereof. The clutch is then disengaged and the machine comes to a full stop, belt-pulley C and toothed wheel E then again rotating loosely on the drivingshaft. This stop occurs at the moment when the movable frame is in its lowermost position and the grippers are in contact with the pile of labels. The machine is then in position to receive a bottle to be labeled.
Hook 53 is connected by rod 51, hinged thereto, with lever 48, as hereinbefore explained. The length of rod 51 and the parts of the mechanism connecting lever 48 with plate 41 are so adjusted that when hook 53 is brought bythe action of the spring 55 into horizontal position plate 4:1 is pushed a short distance outwardly toward bolster 23. When a bottle is set in its place in the machine, it is slightly pushed inwardly against plate 11. This plate yields, and thereby through the action of the bell-crank lever 48, hook 53 is drawn up and disengaged from clutch-lever e. \Vhen thus released, the clutch-lever is pressed by spring q against wheel E, wedge u slides 1 between the teeth of this wheel, thus again clutching shaft B to belt-pulley U, and the mechanisms of the machine are set in operation. When the bottle to which the label was applied is removed from the machine, (which is done when the movable frame isin its highest position and the labeling operation is completed,) spring 55 pushes hook 53 down again in the path of the clutch-lever c and withdraws wedge 10 from wheel E when brought in contact therewith by the revolution of shaft B. The clutch is then again disengaged and the machine stops.
The machine may also be operated by handpower, for which the hand-wheel D is keyed to shaft B. In practical use, however, this hook. In this position of 56 is in the path of the bev operating of the machine by hand will be limited to setting and adjusting the parts of the machine at the start or when changing the arrangements of the machine for differentlyshaped bottles or for bottles of different sizes and the like.
' This labeling-machine may be used for labeling of bottles of any kind or size, also for labeling of cans. The parts of the machine, more particularly the grippers 86, with their levers 106, wipers 113, and levers 112, may be made adjustable or exchangeable to accommodate different shapes and sizes of bottles, cans, and the like.
I claim as my invention l. A labeling-machine comprisinga stationary and a movable frame; a set of pickers and mechanism for holding them yieldingly in position; a set of wipers and mechanism for actuating the Wipers, all mounted in the movable frame; an underneath support for the thing to be labeled, a receptacle for labels, a receptacle for paste, and mechanism for transmitting paste to the pickers; means for actuating the paste-transmitting mechanism; and mechanism for reciprocating the movable frame mounted in the stationary frame.
2. A labeling-machine comprising a stationary and a movable frame, a set of pickers and mechanism for holding them yieldingly in position; a set of wipers and mechanism for actuating the Wipers, all mounted in the mov-- able frame; a stationary support underneath the thing to be labeled and a clamp therefor and mechanism for actuating the clamp; a receptacle for labels, a receptacle for paste, mechanism for transmitting paste to the pickers, means for actuating the paste-transmitting mechanism; and mechanism for reciprocating the movable frame mounted in the stationary frame.
3. A labeling-machine comprising a stationary and a movable frame, a set of pickers and mechanism for holding themyieldingly in position; a set of Wipers and mechanism for actuating the wipers, all mounted in the movable frame; an extensible support for the thing to be labeled, a receptacle for labels, a receptacle for paste and mechanism for transmitting the paste to the pickers; a shaft mounted in the stationary frame; mechanism for reciprocating the movable frame, mechanisms for actuating thepaste-transmitting mechanism, a driving-gear and a clutch set on the shaft, and mechanism, connected with the extensible support, for operating the clutch.
4.. A labeling-machine comprising a stationary and a movable frame; a set of pickers and mechanism for'holding them yieldingly in position; a'set of Wipers and mechanism for actuating the Wipers, all mounted in the movable frame; a support for the thing to be labeled, a receptacle for labels, a receptacle for paste, a die-holder, a printing-die secured to the die-holder, an ink-pad, mechanism for re- -ciprocating the die-holder, to and from the ink-pad and to and from the label; a receptacle for paste, means for transmitting the paste to the pickers, and mechanism for reciprocating the movable frame mounted in the stationary frame.
5. A labeling-machine, comprising a frame,
a receptacle for labels, a set of pickers provided with means for applying paste to the labels, a receptacle for paste, means for conveying the paste from the receptacle to the pickers, mechanism for reciprocating the pickers between the paste-conveying means and the labels, a support for the thing to be labeled set between the receptacle for the labels and the paste-conveying means; a set of Wipers, mechanism for reciprocating the wipers to and from the support for the thing to be labeled, and mechanism for yieldingly pressing the wipers against the thing to be labeled.
6. A labeling-machine, comprising a stationary frame, guideways set on the frame, a movable frame mounted on the guideways,a slotted plate on one end of the movable frame, a pair of levers pivoted to the plate above the slot and fulcrumed to each other; a spring connected to the fulcrum-pin and pressing the free ends of the levers over the slot; a pair of bell-crank levers pivoted to the other'end of the movable frame, connectin -rods, each connecting one arm of the bell-crank levers with the free ends of the levers pivoted to the slotted plate; strips of yielding material aflixed to the other arms of the bell-crank levers; a pair of double-armed levers, pivoted to the movable frame, picker-bars aflixed one to each lever, a spring affixed to the movable frame and set against the double-armed levers; a support underneath the thing to be labeled, a receptacle for labels, a receptacle for paste, and mechanism for transmitting paste to the pickers; means for actuating the paste-transmitting mechanism; a driving-shaft, set in the stationary frame; a crank-disk secured to the driving-shaft, a pin set in the crank-disk, and a roller set on the pin and engaging with the slot of the movable frame.
7. Mechanism for feeding labels in an automatic labeling-machine comprising a stationary platform, a bracket secured to the platform, both provided with'a bore; a feed-screw set in the bore, a receptacle for labels set on the feed-screw, a centrally screw-threaded ratchet-wheel set on thefeed-screw between the platform andthe bracket; a rock-shaft, an arm secured to the rock-shaft,'a pawl attached to the arm and engaging with the ratchetwheel, and mechanism for rocking the shaft. 8. Mechanism for applying paste to labels in a labeling-machine, comprising a receptacle for the labels; movable arms provided With picker-bars, and mechanism for reciprocating them'to and-away from the labels, a receptacle for paste, rollers revolving in the receptacle, a guide-rail set between the rollers ro- IIO tating in the receptacle and the picker-bars; a saddle movably mounted on the rail, a shaft set in the saddle, rollers set on the shaft, and means for reciprocating the saddle along the rail.
9. Mechanism for applying paste to labels in a labeling machine, comprising a receptacle for the labels; movable arms provided with picker-bars, and mechanism for reciprocating them to and away from the labels, a receptacle for paste, rollers revolving in the receptacle, a guide-rail set between the rollers rotating in the receptacle and the picker-bars, a saddle movably mounted on the rail, a shaft set in the saddle, rollers set on the shaft, a rocking shaft, an arm secured to the rocking shaft, a rod connecting the arm with the saddle and means for rocking the shaft.
10. Mechanism for printing or marking of labels in an automatic labeling-machine, comprising a platform for the labels, an ink-pad, a die-holder, a printing-die secured to the clieholder, a rocking shaft, an arm secured to the rocking shaft and to the die-holder, mechanism for rocking the arm, a shaft, a cam set on the shaft, a forked plate saddled on the shaft adjoining the cam, means for holding the plate yieldingly to the shaft, a pin set in the plate, a roller set on the pin and engaging with the cam, and a connecting-rod connecting the plate with the die-holder.

Mechanism for automatically starting and stopping a bottle-labeling machine, comprising a driving-shaft, mechanism for actuating the movable parts of the machine set on the shaft, a driving pulley and a toothed wheel joined with the driving-pulley and both set to loosely revolve on the driving-shaft, a collar secured to the driving-shaft adjoining the toothed wheel, a clutch-lever in position to engage With the toothed Wheel and means for pressing the Wedge in engagement with the wheel; a bevel-edged hook, pivotally con nected with the frame of the machine, a spring acting on the hook to press it in the path of the clutch-lever; a support for the thing to be labeled, a bell-crank lever mounted in the support, and a connecting-rod connecting the other arm ofthe bell-crank lever with the hook engaging the-clutch-lever.

Mechanism for holding the thing to be labeled in a labeling-machine, while the label is being applied thereto, the mechanism comprising a support for the thing to be labeled; a double-armed lever fulcrumed in the frame of the machine above the support, a pad secured to one arm of the lever, a connecting rod secured to the other arm of. the lever, a shaft, a' cam set on the shaft, a forked plate aflixed to the connecting-rod, and saddled on the shaft, means for yieldingly holding the plate to the shaft, a pin set in the plate, and
-a roller set loosely to revolve on the pin in position to engage with the cam.
